no so.cal shows for the summer tour? I don't wanna drive 6 hours north to just watch opeth play with a bunch of metalcore bands. lol

Deth 04-15-2005 07:52 AM
as soon as i can learn to growl, my bands covering demon of the fall :) we can play it, just can't sing it
I can growl with it for a verse or two and then my throat gives out.

Maybe I'm just weak :upset:.

i just need to know how to growl, hahaha :p

Deth 04-15-2005 07:57 AM

Practice, young padawan. The problem is doing it for any sustained amount of time.

the2stranger 04-15-2005 08:02 AM

I can growl 2 or 3 songs, it's just a pain in the a$s to to clean after the growls

Special Brew 04-15-2005 08:10 AM

I can growl but not as deeply as Mikael, and growling doesn't affect my clean voice much. But I am not a very good clean singer, but I am getting better. I can sing harsh blackmetal vocals pretty well and for a decent amount of time without any problems. I don't know how to get my voice deep enough to do the deathmetal-ish growls, I guess my voice is just a little to high.

Deth 04-15-2005 08:13 AM

I can all the clean vocals almost perfectly, excluding some of the higher notes he hits and going from a growl to clean isn't a problem, it's just keeping the growling going for a while.

123. I'm thinkin' about getting singing lessons

Deth 04-15-2005 08:48 AM

Think they do death metal singing?

Arise II 04-15-2005 09:11 AM

Hahaha, not necessary, I've already got that part down, its the clean singing that needs work

Det_Nosnip 04-15-2005 10:50 AM

Vocal lessons will help with everything. It's all about learning how to control your voice.

I've been thinking about vocal lessons, but I am taking classical guitar lessons from Larry Long, renting out my former guitar teachers studio every month, and I may be getting piano lessons from some lady about 40 mins away that is supposedly semi-famous. And they all charge a pretty penny for their lessons, so I don't know if I could afford vocal lessons as well. Also, I am extremely shy about singing in front of people I don't know, screaming/harsh singing I do no prob, but singing is embarassing. :upset:

I know what you mean about singing man, but if you do play a show or something, just close your eyes or something. And jsut block it out of your mind.

I know... I know... easier said than done.

I know what you mean, I'm kinda the same way. I'm very self conscious about my voice, particularly since alot of my friends are vocal performance majors. It's really a shame...now I wish I had joined choirs when I was a kid! I'd like to take vocal lessons some time soon, though...piano, too! Piano is probably the most attractive thing for me right now as a melodic instrument, because it's so **** straight forward and easy to understand if you have a decent grasp of music, plus you can easily voice against different sections because pianos have so many octaves.

Bertovo 04-15-2005 05:59 PM

In Bleak, during the clean parts, is Mikael doing lead vocals, and Steve Wilson doing clean, or the other way around?

Deth 04-15-2005 06:26 PM

Mikeal's doing everything, but Steven probably added his voice to the mix of the clean vocals as well.

ElectricalStorm 04-15-2005 10:04 PM

In bleak Mikael does the growling and the clean section is a duet For example at the beginning of the clean section:

"devious movements in your eyes -- steven wilson
Moved me from relief -- Mikael
Breath comes out white clouds with your lies -- steven wilson
And filters through me" -- Mikael

Bertovo 04-15-2005 11:29 PM

Thanks.

Does that mean they don't play Bleak live?

Or does Mikael just do it by himself?

ElectricalStorm 04-16-2005 09:37 AM

They don't play bleak live but its most likely because it has multiple guitars layered on to the track (at least four of them). :thumb:

Arise II 04-16-2005 09:42 AM

^^^I though most Opeth songs had layered guitar. How do they do with all the ones that has acoustic and electric? Doubleneck or really fast switchin? ;)

AblazeMySorrow 04-16-2005 10:25 AM

great band to sleep to, especaially to Morningrise

Arise II 04-16-2005 10:45 AM

^^^ I thought I was the only one! Death and Thrash is great for sleeping. People always look at me like I'm insane when I tell them I listen to stuff like Sepultura and the like when goin to bed

I listen to a lot of Opeth, Dark Tranquilly, and In Flames when I sleep.

But Linkin Park is the best sleeping music, the songs make you have weird dreams.

Did anybody else realize the music they listen to when they sleep effects their dreams?

they've played it live before and I have the bootleg to it, AND it sounds awesome.

I listen to lots of metal when I sleep too, but it's mostly melodic and atmospheric type of metal songs such as Symphony X songs, some Opeth.

the2stranger 04-16-2005 11:28 AM

would you be willing to upload the live version of bleak? :D

Their PRS guitars have piezo pickups in the bridge that allows them to get an acoustic guitar sound. :)

Arise II 04-16-2005 12:15 PM

^^^ Oh yeah, should have thought of that... I wanna get it installed myself, but apparently, it woull require some serious body carving/routing

Wow, awesome. I hope they play it this summer. Anyone else going to see them? (sounds of the underground tour)

Bertovo 04-16-2005 03:46 PM

I am going. :)

Infact, the reason I asked about them playing it live, is because I really want to see it at SotU.

ATM 04-16-2005 03:57 PM

I've got a video from an Opeth concert if anyone wants me to upload it.

yes, but when Steven sings, Mikael sings backing vocals for those lines.
