New Red Sparowes is good. I think.
At the Soundless Dawn is alot better IMO.

Also listening to Rosetta the Galilean Satelites for the first time and I'm really liking it. Kinda reminds me of Isis at some points, but better overall.

Kage 05-01-2007 08:55 PM

Yeah I think Red Sparowes' first album is much better. When I saw them live, their new songs were a total snooze whereas the old ones were totally rawkin.

Rosetta >>>>> Isis

<3 them
It's because jazz fans are narrow mind cockbags, no worries though.

Try Jaga Jazzist out. They're not really jazz or post rock, but they're heralded as both. They have quite a bit of fame in Scandinavia.
They're ok. I've heard them.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2007 08:56 PM

Rosetta is probably the heaviest band I have ever witnessed.

But yes, much better than Isis either way.

ATM 05-01-2007 08:57 PM

I should check them out.

Kage 05-01-2007 08:58 PM

I have to admit I brought Rosetta to these forums.

No need to thank me, guys!

bucket 05-01-2007 08:58 PM
Cinematic Orchestra, guys.
wins.

same label as Jaga Jazzist, and moderately similar to pre- What We Must Jaga Jazzist

Basically, totally awesome.

/doesn't consider them post-rock though

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2007 08:59 PM

Yeah you'd probably like them Chris. They have similar writing styles to that of Giant Squid, where they stick with one idea for a long times, but the music is so good that it doesn't get repetitive.

Actually, GS gets repetitive, but not Rosetta.

ATM 05-01-2007 09:01 PM

GS do get repetitive but I like that one song they do so much. I can't remember the name.

edit: Versus the Siren

Red Sparowes just seem like the kind of band that would be really really good live. Has anyone listened to any of their splits?

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2007 09:02 PM

Metridium Fields. Same riff for 18 minutes.

Yeah they're a great, great band. You can kinda disappear into their albums.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2007 09:03 PM

Man, I Rosetta's guitarist is so amazing. I have never really listened closely to him due to the layers and typical noisy film covering the sound, but damn he does same amazing stuff.

Kage 05-01-2007 09:05 PM

I agree. I love his playing so much.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2007 09:07 PM

I was checking out their Myspace and apparently the guitarist and one of the members are doing shows in the Philly area with just guitar and a sampler.

That would be absolutely epic.

Kage 05-01-2007 09:07 PM

That's awesome, dude. He's a creative guy and a solid player. I love when he busts into a really groove-heavy riff.

I'd like to hear some bootlegs of those shows. Wonder if they'll show up or not.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2007 09:11 PM

I doubt it, they're basically unheard of.

Actually, I bet the members have some live recordings, so maybe I should hit them up on Myspace. That would be a nice find.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2007 11:56 PM

So apparently Rosetta already have a split out...Some hardcore band by the name of Balboa. They're on the same label, so that's the connection.

Anyway, someone should look into stealing that.

There's also a neat interview with all the members of Rosetta. Pretty funny stuff.

Kage 05-01-2007 11:57 PM

I'll take care of it.

bwnstl 05-02-2007 01:12 AM

I love Rosetta, but I have to be the lone one to disagree about them being better than Isis. I think Isis have a better track record of making amazing albums (Rosetta only has one...), better and more intelligible vocals (and easier to find lyrics) and because of that better conceptual centers, and better and more melodic layering. Everything else is more or less easily comparable.

But hey, I love them both and it's all subjective anyways.

Word on all counts.

I think Isis are a bit more dynamic as well. That word is rather vague, but it's the only word I can think of.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-02-2007 09:28 AM

After reading a little bit about the concept for The Galillean Sattelites, I'm really interested in their lyrics. Sounds like one of those super-stoned daydreams tbh. :p

Txus 05-02-2007 09:37 AM
Laura, Te, Pirate Ship Quintet, Gifts From Enola, If These Trees Could Talk, Blueneck, The Ascent Of Everest, Site Of Future Rome, and These Monsters are all excellent, relatively unknown bands everyone needs to hear. (Large namedrop to hopefully start some discussion)

And Del Rey, Windmills By The Ocean, Giant Squid, and Year Of No Light for the metal side of the spectrum.
All of this are excellent bands. You guys should REALLY check out Tristeza, very good stuff.

I have Triad. It also has Battle of Mice and Made Out Of Babies. I was a little disappointed with the RS stuff as I was expecting new material not just live stuff

ATM 05-02-2007 10:07 AM

What is the best Rosetta album?

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-02-2007 10:08 AM

There's only one. The Galilean Satellites. Might wanna check my spelling though.

Kage 05-02-2007 10:08 AM

Well they only have one full length, the Galilean Satellites. I haven't heard this split yet, but that's an amazing piece of work.

ATM 05-02-2007 10:09 AM

I'm on it, I'll post my thoughts later.

Kage 05-02-2007 02:44 PM

Jake I got the Rosetta/Balboa split, I'll e-mail or AIM it to you a little later. Anyone else who wants it, drop your e-mail here.

Nepenthe 05-02-2007 03:05 PM

The split isn't as good as their work on Satellites, but it's really good nonetheless. Balboa is good, but nothing extraordinary.

I'm really liking the Mouth Of The Architect and Kenoma split right now.
