I don't know about anyone else, but Jacksons always fit me like a glove. It's always good to play one before you buy one of course.
Yeah, I've never tried one, so I'm hoping it works out ok.
Do you have a job or something, or do you just take and save all the cash you can get.
I don't have a steady job; working for people off an on and cleaning my parent's car for 10 bucks every other week. I just save up any money I get.

Dude, I just saw your profile; you really like the HateCrew, don't you? :p
Jesus, Leah (I think that's your name, isn't it?) mentions she's a girl and everyone goes crazy. Chill people.

Anyway, i'm currently working on learning the rest of Silent Night, Bodom Night on guitar.
Correct, Josh. I know; I guess they just like me. :p
Sweet! You'll have to upload a recording when you're done!

Hell yeah. Diehard Children of Bodom fan.

So let's hear it from the disgruntled musicians. Is there anyone here besides me who struggles to improve at guitar but still isn't quite good enough to "shred"? I can play many of Bodom's lead parts, I don't bother with their chord-based riffs, but I can play zero solos (aside from the ones I'm slowly working on). Someone please tell me I'm not one mediocre guitarist in a thread full of shredders.

I'm with you there. I can only play the rhythm to Sixpounder and some of the riffs to Chokehold and Bed of Razors and such. I haven't learned any solos and some of the stuff is just plain hard. GuitarPro helps me a lot though.

I'm mediocre as well. Can't play hardly any solos, howver I'm working at improv shredding and getting ok at it. I just need to learn more scales. Hey everyone  .

 Hi Chris! How's the cover coming? You're going to have to deal with me asking about it, it's my favorite song off Follow the Reaper.

Still at everything done but the solo. I'll be working on it a bit tonight, and lots tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get it to Ollie by Monday or Tuesday. Man, Subway is so damn good.

Good to know. Thanks for reassuring me, people. It sounds like most of us are equals. But with my newly acquired transcribing device I find I can tab out any song and play it at verying speeds...but I still have to start slow. Deadnight Warrior, here I come.

stringbreaker 07-09-2005 05:14 PM

I've just been getting into COB.
And I completely dig their ****.
Angels don't kill has been in steady rotation because it's my favorite song by them.
Recommend me some more of their stuff.

IheartSP 07-09-2005 05:15 PM

I'd say I'm a shredder. Anyone who wants to hear me just IM me on AIM. I have yahoo but I never go on unless someone wants to do a jam.

Leah do you just practice without distortion? I suggest you buy a cheap practice amp with a nice metal tone. I own a Roland Cube Micro for practice and portability, it is great. It is 3 watts, overpowers a drumset by way more than you'd imagine, and has a few amp models, including a very nice dual rect.

Just get anything from their Follow The Reaper album to hear them at their best. But if you liked Angels Don't Kill I also recommend anything else from Hate Crew Deathroll. Anything, just get anything, man.

How long have you been playing, if I may ask?

IheartSP 07-09-2005 05:20 PM

Very close to 2 years. I started shredding around 1.5 years, maybe a little less.

Shadows 07-09-2005 05:21 PM

^^^ OUCH :upset:

flamesofbodom 07-09-2005 05:23 PM

Id frown too. I just got a Line 6 Spider II and it sounds so awesomely professional. You shoud get at least a combo Line 6 or Randall or something

IheartSP 07-09-2005 05:26 PM

Yeah Spider II's are really nice practice amps, great metal tone.

Hey man, don't get down about not being able to shred after 2 years. Be glad you aren't on the guitar forum, but that place is the only reason I'm this good. There are people there who play Eruption after 1 year and stuff and I always got so discouraged that I worked my a$s off. Just see me as motivation to work harder, I practiced songs and scales and such for hours everyday to get to where I am.

Yeah, thanks for not reveling in my apparent sorrow. :)

I stay away from the guitar forum for the same reason...people who have insane skills after so little time. I usually look at that and it makes me work harder...but I think I just waited too long to start working my ass off. I practice several hours a day but I guess I just need to focus more on scales, etc.

IheartSP 07-09-2005 05:31 PM

I used to only post in the guitar forum, now I only post here. It helped me learn a lot of stuff and get really motivated, but I think my time there is done and I've learned all I have to learn from there. I remember though, it was like a warzone in there. Either you had to shape up and be a prodigy or you basically got flamed. I was metaphorically whipped into shape. I love the atmosphere on this forum a lot more. Most of us here play guitar, but everyone is so easy going.

You should upload some of your stuff on this thread if you can play any Bodom.

Depends what I practice. If I'm practicing songs which use distortion, I'll use it. If I'm just practicing with my notes and stuff my teacher gives me, then no.
Still at everything done but the solo. I'll be working on it a bit tonight, and lots tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get it to Ollie by Monday or Tuesday. Man, Subway is so damn good.
Awesome. (You're right about the Subway. I had some last week. Good stuff.)

flamesofbodom 07-09-2005 05:32 PM

Same here. I NEVER practice scales so im suprised how i can play the things i do let alone my impove stuff. Once you learn some scales and a buttload of chords in all positions then you'll play the best stuff you'll ever play

IheartSP 07-09-2005 05:33 PM

I jsut assumed your amp didn't have distortion, or it had terrible distortion for metal.

I'll record some stuff sometime when I'm sitting around, but I take a long time to record things cuase I always have to get it perfect. If anyone wants to hear an ok Silent Night, Bodom Night solo with a midi backing track within the next few days tho I'll start recording that.

I just think a problem might be your blowing thru all the stuff your practicing. Either that or you need to just do it a couple times more

I know exaclt ywhat you mean. It's almost is though you're only welcome if you're some sort of naturally gifted individual. The threads around here are much better. You can just sit around and talk about metal and no one really cares how good you are.

I actually started practicing more out of spite. :) Not the best motive, but it worked. And - tell me if I'm prying too much here - do you study theory?

flamesofbodom 07-09-2005 05:37 PM
Who?
Whovever was having a problem. So whoever that was im talking to you

Taste_My_Scythe 07-09-2005 05:38 PM

NP: Triple Corpse Hammerblow - CoB

I think that I'm going to record myself playing some Children of Bodom random riffs or something sometime. I have some friends that I said I would send some samples to. Maybe I'll post them on the Hate Crew thread or on Josh's board or something.

I'm off. Ciao, dudes.

Shadows 07-09-2005 05:41 PM
Whovever was having a problem. So whoever that was im talking to you
That would be me. You're right in that I'm blowing through things, but mainly I'm blowing through all the wrong things. I focus on the simple theory-based things and rush through scales and arpeggios - the things that boost speed.

Thanks for all your help guys. You've really gotten me motivated. :thumb:
So much so that I'm going to go practice now. Later people.

Yeah I know loads of theory, and I write a lot of songs, it could not be handier. Without that I'd know nothing. I also have a really good ear I'd say, I train it a little bit. If you play me a note on the piano I can tell you what it is in relation to C, so for example if I play an F with my eyes closed I can go downwards and tell you when I get to C, and then count up to find if its F. I'm slowly starting to do it without counting, and when I can do that, that means I can tab whole songs by ear and it'll be awesome.

Thor 07-09-2005 05:54 PM

Thi is quickly becoming another community thread for CoB fans. People don't really discuss the band anymore.

Ah, who cares? It's probably my favorite thread.

ArcLite 07-09-2005 05:55 PM

I really need to start learning my theory. It would help me out immensely. I'm getting decent though. I knocked out that Taste Of My Scythe stuff (all but the solo, of course) pretty quick. I'm best at the rhythem stuff, but I've really been putting the hammer down on getting better at lead.
