Shaun, Shaun, Shaun.

It pains me to see this thread on the 2nd page. Any updates? Found a new car yet?

Nope, went with Honda this time round.

Got a Jazz aka Fit 1.5 Vtec in Silver.

Great little car.

Right, as promised some update photos.

ebe9 07-21-2007 06:40 AM

Well it has indeed been a while since I posted any photos of the progress on this project, in part due to organising a new car and selling old one, which is now all wrapped up.

On to the pictures.

A front shot of the project as it currently stands.

A rear shot of the project as it currently stands.

A close up of the front.

A close up of the rear. This is where most of the work of late has been taking place. I have been shaping the upper horn area and tapering it to blend into the body.

I have also flattened the raised piece so that the neck core now sits fluch with the wings. It looks a lot better for it I feel.

ebe9 07-21-2007 06:44 AM

And two final shots to show the tapering at the rear of the bass.

There is still a fair bit to be done here but it is begining to take shape.

Close up shot of the tapering.

Angled shot of the tapering. You can see how the neck core now sits flush with the wings.

lemoley 07-21-2007 07:39 AM

is it me or is there a rather large depression on the back of the neck?

blizzard 07-21-2007 07:43 AM

Looks great so far.

Mike: Yeah I think there is.

Also how are you finishing it? True Oil? and congrats on the Jazz I used to get driven to school in one, very nice.

ebe9 07-21-2007 08:26 AM
is it me or is there a rather large depression on the back of the neck?
There is a bit of a depression, partly accidental and partly deliberate.

I will still be shaping the neck, and it adds a good tactile point of reference.

lemoley 07-21-2007 08:28 AM

cool, was not trying to drag it down man was just wondering if my eyes were playing a trick on me lol :)

ebe9 07-30-2007 10:42 AM

Some more photos for the masses, photobucket was being difficult over the weekend, hence the lack of uploading on my part.

On to the pics:

Just an overview of the project, mainly the shaping of the join between the neck core and the single cut wing.

Close up.

Extreme close up, should note the lack of "dent" from before, in part due to further shaping of the neck.

Finally aview looking down the neck to the body to show the "hollow ground" effect rather than the 45 degree slope of before.

And there you have it.

Next step will most likely be routing for the pickups and placement of the bridge.

maniac0796 07-30-2007 03:43 PM

WickedAwesome.

HELLonWHEELS 07-31-2007 08:05 PM

Looking good shaun. i'm looking forward to some sound clips.

blizzard 08-01-2007 04:40 AM

Looking hot. That last pic makes the top wing look twice the thickness of the bottom wing.

Mr. Tamzarian 08-06-2007 01:56 PM

Any updates? I read this thread all the way through from the first page and now I'm hooked. i want to see this baby finished and with hardware!

Low_End_Communications 08-08-2007 12:07 PM

Why build an EUB with NO upright characteristics?
Any updates? I read this thread all the way through from the first page and now I'm hooked. i want to see this baby finished and with hardware!
Well tomorrow is a public holiday on this side and I am taking the Friday off, so should be able to get a fair but of work done.

To Low End:

Pretty much because I played a Dean Pace Bass which is a bit of a bastarised electric upright and I really liked the feel, except for the fact that it looks like a plank of wood, so I decided to build it to my specs.

At the end of the day it is not a true EUB, but does contain some characteristics thereof.

Mr. Tamzarian 08-08-2007 03:17 PM

It looks like a normal electric, but far too big and heavy to use as one.

ebe9 08-09-2007 02:19 AM

Google the Dean Pace Bass, then you will see the concept behind this.

the_pure_drummer 08-09-2007 09:58 AM

Looks awsome man.

Keep up the good work!
Google the Dean Pace Bass, then you will see the concept behind this.
The Pace Bass looks nothing like your one. The Pace looks like an electric double bass made with as little wood as possible. Yours has a body, and a well-shaped body at that.

ebe9 08-12-2007 12:15 PM

Right, so I did not get as much done as I would have liked, but one of the trickier parts is now complete, i.e. the routing of the pickup cavities.

On to the pictures.

An overview shot without pickups.

Son of Magni 08-12-2007 02:33 PM

Lookin sweet, we need a full body shot with the hardware though. What's your plan for the tail? Zip it off with a bandsaw and hand shape to match the body?

the_pure_drummer 08-12-2007 03:49 PM

Man that is extremely HOT.

Keep up the good work man!

Wish I had a bandsaw :thumb:

Not sure at this point, potentially thinking of a small fishtail of sorts, to give it the illision of extra length.

But the Pace isn't an electric double bass. It is pretty much a bass guitar that happens to be upright, like Hobbes' bass. In terms of scale and radius, they are both much more similar to a bass guitar than an upright.

If you have a look earlier in the thread, you will see photos that show the rear cavity for the electronics.

The pickups will be wired into two 3-way switches that will allow me to switch them from Series/Parallel/Single Coil.

jordan-z 08-20-2007 07:55 PM

Did you route the pick up cavities by hand

Yep, made a template first then routed by hand.

backsidetailslide 08-21-2007 11:27 AM

i love that bridge! i have the exact one on one of the basses i have built.. ill be using them for all my basses from now on!

maniac0796 10-07-2007 04:09 AM

Yummy!

amnestyslowend 10-14-2007 11:11 AM

How are going to finnish it? I would use tung oil or teak oil, it would look sick with an oil finish!:thumb:

I am going to use danish oil wich is pretty much tung oil with some others thrown in.

Sorry to all that this is taking so long, its really been sitting on the back burner for a while now.

I am hoping to be able to get back into it again.

purple_hazer 10-14-2007 11:37 AM

haha you have everyone on the edge of their seats man

ebe9 11-17-2007 05:54 AM

I have started working on this project again after a bit of a leave of absence.

I will however only be taking photos when there is significant change, as currently I am doing some of the final shaping anf sanding so very little difference is noticable.

APatioDoor 12-04-2007 09:12 AM

When i started reading this thread, i thought '10 pages, he must've finished it by now' now you are gonna have me checking it every day until its done!!!.

Awesome job like . . :chug:

josh3184 12-12-2007 07:15 PM

can't wait for this to be finished, looks like a stirling job so far mate :D :thumb:
