I could name off the usual, Pelican, Isis, Explosions in the Sky, but they've got their own sound.

that was the album that got me into post rock.

beautiful band, Sigur Ros.

download "The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place" by Explosions in the Sky if you have not already.
a new fan of post rock, especially a fan of ( ), will undoubtedly enjoy that album.

sr800bkBassist 07-31-2006 10:56 PM
EITS and Heroin are the two bands I constantly see you mention. Just an observation.
me?
i mention heroin every once in a while when a debate strikes up from somebody who thinks that Fallout Boy is emo, and i do mention EITS occasionaly, but not too often. maybe you just happen come across those posts more than any of my others. i'd say the bands that i whore the most are Defiance Ohio and Sonic Youth, perhaps.

Yes,

Did you receive it?

Kage 08-01-2006 08:53 PM

I'd say Mono is also a good band for a postrock newcomer. Their albums are stunning, and I haven't even heard their latest, but I've read it's their best and I yearn for it. They're much better than EitS, I think. Their elegiac, calm parts are far more poignant, while they can get as intense as anything I've ever heard.

Nepenthe 08-01-2006 09:01 PM

I've heard Mono, and they are excellent. I've still yet to hear anything more intense than We Followed Tigers. But I'm just an enormous fanboy (if I haven't made it obvious).

Yes, I did. Thanks a bunch, this stuff is fantastic. :)

bwnstl 08-02-2006 01:37 AM

Can someone upload some Mono? I haven't heard them.

masada 08-02-2006 01:41 AM

I've come to the conclusion that Explosions in the Sky are the most boring post-rock band I have heard so far.

PIGS(1 different one) 08-02-2006 01:57 AM

Don't Look Back and The Samuel Jackson 5 are my favorites in the genre.

Jaga Jazzist's "What we must" is also a very good album, looking forward to their next album.

I would also recommend the album Agaetis Byrjun by them, my favorite.

Okay, add Sonic Youth to that too.

Anyone hear Burton Wagner's stuff.

Daven 08-02-2006 12:02 PM

I had some songs by him, but i deleted them because i needed space in the hard drive. The songs are very good though.

thunderzstruck 08-02-2006 12:43 PM

yeah i have his album on my computer.. not a big fan but its well written

Smackers 08-02-2006 08:30 PM

Fans of Pelican and Isis should really check out Disappearer. I actually consider Disappearer much better than the former.

Kage 08-02-2006 08:37 PM

I highly doubt they're better than the kings, Pelican. But I'll give them a shot. Do they have a website with some songs? Myspace or something?

masada 08-02-2006 08:40 PM

Oh band possibly named after a Sonic Youth song.

There's a local post rock band here that seems to be pretty decent: http://www.myspace.com/esskyma

bucket 08-03-2006 03:52 PM

Kage, I live about an hour away from Dayton, the home city of Mouth of the Architect. I have to check them out for sure. They will be playing there on the 5th and then again in September.

I also see they will be playing several shows in Texas in case you haven't noticed.

Post-rock is awesome.

Anyone familair with Bloemfontein?
It's very dreamy post rock, I know nothing of this band besides that, no clue where they're from.
I assume SOuth Africa, as it has a city called Bloemfontein.

LF96 08-10-2006 02:37 PM

Bloemfontein is also the city where J.R.R. Tolkien was born and lived for a while, so maybe they're just a bunch of Tolkien freaks. Or maybe they just translated Flowerfountain into Dutch.

Anyway, you should all check out this Belgian post-rock band named Toman, they have one album out now and their next will be released in a few months or so. It will also be available in America. Unlike most post-rock bands they actually are quite funny, with album titles like "Catching a Grizzly Bear: Lesson One" and "Perhaps We Should've Smoked The Salmon First". Their sound is a bit in the same vein as Explosions In The Sky, but more melodic and with less distortion. I actually like 'em better than EITS, but that might be bias. Check them out here:

I saw Versoma, Daughters, and Red Sparowes last night. I drove 3 1/2 hours to the show and got there a couple hours early. My friend and I walked past the Grog Shop (venue) and I walked within 2 feet of one of the Sparowes. I couldn't say a word though :upset:.

Here's a rundown of the bands:

Versoma- They have a Isis, Neurosis, Pelican type feel. Basically, they brought nothing new, played entirely too loudly, and didn't have good vocals. 3/10

Daughters- What the ****. This was a diverse looking band. You have a singer that looked like he grew up on Marilyn Manson and a bass player that has that Harley Davidson look. You could tell which fans came for this band. About five people were moshing... in the second row... which lead to some heavy shoves from the people in the front row.

The singer was quite charismatic and entertaining. I think I am going to make a comic strip of the Daughter's show. I can't quite explain it.

I don't know what genre these guys play, but I think metalcore? Maybe. It wasn't too bad though.

Red Sparowes- I was actually disappointed.. Only because the best mother****ing part ever came on the first song, Buildings Began to Stretch... The second half of the song is amaazzinggg live. The crowd was a real downer though. Just the occasional nodder :( I wanted to get into wayyy more. Next they played I Saw the Sky... good, nothing fantastic. Like the Holwing Glory... came after. Not a good live song. Some of the melodies got lost in the noise. Meh. Then a new song I hadn't heard- slow, repetitive, good. Alone and Unaware, ****ing good. Our Happiest Days, alright. The Sixth extinction, ****ing good ending.

Overall, Red Sparowes were great. Plus I bought a shirt, RS/Gregor Samsa split, and a RS "fun pack", stickers, pins, ect..

And to nicely round out the evening, I got a ****ING PARKING TICKET GODDAMN I PAYED FOR FOUR ****ING HOURS BUT PARKED FOR FIVE AND A HALF **** YOU CLEVELAND!

Wait, actually that wasn't the end. The 4 hour drive home was.

Who has heard the new ISIS song Dulcinea? If you have, what'd you think? I personally think it's a great song. My favorite of the few I've heard from them. I'm planning on picking up one of their albums sometime soon.

JamJar 08-24-2006 01:30 PM

I just listened to the song. It's a hell of a lot better than all of the other Isis I've heard. This song didn't bore me to death :) I need to listen to it a few more times and I could see myself liking it a lot.

Kage 08-24-2006 01:36 PM

New Isis song rules, of course.

JamJar 08-24-2006 02:02 PM

Listening to it again, this song owns.

bwnstl 08-24-2006 04:18 PM

It's all I listened to yesterday. It's amazing, already one of my favorite ISIS songs. And the song is 7 minutes, but it only feels like 3, like you want it to keep going but it's over way too fast.

Syncratic 08-24-2006 07:41 PM

Dulcinea owns everything.

I can't wait for the new album...

Speaking of Isis, I just reviewed Panopticon...may be my best review yet.

Nepenthe 09-08-2006 02:57 PM

Is anyone in here knowledgable on 65 Days Of Static? If you are, can you please email me at Quorthonace @ gmail.com? Many thanks in advance.

(I would just ask the question here, but I'm hardly on much, so I probably wouldn't see the response)

Txus 09-08-2006 03:38 PM

I am. I just emailed you One Time For All Time

Kage 09-08-2006 05:35 PM

Could I get that too?

Tyr 09-08-2006 05:39 PM

Which album should I get if I want some good Sigur Rós?

Nepenthe 09-08-2006 05:50 PM

Uh, what? I just need a question answered on them.

I already have their entire discography.

Kage 09-08-2006 05:53 PM
Which album should I get if I want some good Sigur Rós?
( ) is a popular choice. Also Aegytirus Beajyn (or whatever) is good. Then again, Takk would be a decent introduction.

( ) is really, really ambient, slow, subtle, cold, wintry. Aeghyythg Bejen (or whatever) is atmospheric but generally has more going on. Takk is less bleak, a little bit more warm and optimistic.
