Are their genres divided up among albums? Like do they have a metal album, a dub album, etc., or do their albums have songs in each genre?
usually they have a couple of reggae songs on each c-d (along with alot of punk stuff) they also have an entire dub c-d, and an entire metal sounding c-d, with some metal songs every now mixed in with their regular hardcore punk

Their most metal influenced album is I Against I, their best dub album is I & I Survived, and albums like their self titled have a mix of punk and reggae.

Ok, I'll check out that dub album, and probably they're self titled too.

EDIT: I'm getting their s/t and I Against I, can one of you guys upload I & I Survived? I can't find it.

EDIT EDIT: I found it :)

Daniel! 10-08-2005 04:27 PM

I'm really liking the Congos album, thanks Zion Gates.

I just watched the Clash documentary Westway to the World, and Paul Simion talked about reggae a lot and was name dropping bands left and right. So I'm check into a few of the ones he was talking about.

ben d 10-09-2005 12:37 PM

i like:
bob marley
sublime
burning spear
long beach dub allstars
long beach shortbus
buju banton
mishka
matisyahu

magicbus 10-09-2005 02:38 PM

Oh yeah, I forgot about Burning Spear. I'm not sure when the last time we talked about them was, but Man In The Hills is awesome.

El_Shiznit 10-09-2005 03:22 PM

My favorite Burning Spear song is "The Invasion/Black Wa-Da-Da".
He was the first reggae artist I purchased music by. Cept Bad Brains.

Daniel! 10-09-2005 03:27 PM

My favorite Burning Spear song is "Old Marcus Garvey". I like the horn parts.

sweboy 10-09-2005 03:29 PM

"Burning Reggae" is one hot song by him. "Jah Kingdom" is nice too.

magicbus 10-09-2005 03:29 PM

Did anyone of you guys see them on the 2004 Bonnaroo DVD? They do a reeeeally cool song called "Postman".

Daniel! 10-09-2005 03:30 PM

I've haven't seen the DVD but I've considered renting it once or twice. He's supposed to be pretty good live.

El_Shiznit 10-09-2005 03:35 PM
Check 'em at: SOJA Music
Listening to the first song on their site right now. Pretty good. I like the lyrics.

"Time Come Due" is really good too.

Zion Gates 10-09-2005 07:01 PM

my first burning spear song was travelling, my favourite is throw down your arms, or invasion / black wa-da-da ...you guys should definatly check out his album dry & heavy, definatly his most underrated work.

Zion Gates 10-09-2005 07:09 PM

what do you guys think of dancehall? when i went to jamaica everyone was listening to dancehall (and marley ofcourse) there seems to be a lack of roots music left, i didnt talk to locals, but the ones i did talk to listened to mainly dancehall, ive also noticed that many bands are switching to a more dancehall sound (example: black uhuru and michael rose)...personally i really dont like it.

Daniel! 10-09-2005 08:37 PM

From what I've heard I think dancehall is okay, but I don't have any straight ahead albums or anything so I can't have a really concrete opinion on it.

Also, when did you go to Jamaica? What's it like there?

I just relaxed pretty much, its a nice place, people are nice. There was this reggae band that played one night, so i went to go talk to them, nice guys. Iam going back once i reach grade 12 (iam in grade 10 right now) with my dad, we are gonna visite alot of stuff, hopefully alot envolving reggae + getting a bunch of reggae c-ds.

I haven't listened to a lot of Dancehall. I have a Barrington Levy compilation and in the bios, you've described him as a dancehall artist. There's a couple songs on the compilation I would agree on them being dancehall (including his most popular song), but the rest I wouldn't describe as such.

But maybe my definition is wrong. What is a good definition for dancehall, please? :)

Dancehall is all about homophobic, sexist, medicore rappers using their Jamaican image to make money on songs consisting of sub-par rhymes over copied beats. There, I said it. Come on, someone had to say it.

Buju Banton has got some flow though. Sizzla has delievered some nice tunes aswell.

i agree 100%..i hate walking into a store, looking under reggae and you see sh't like elephant man (sometimes even shaggy  ) roots becoming taken over, worst of all by c'rap

El_Shiznit 10-10-2005 11:27 PM

In the reggae section at my local store, I have 50% Bob Marley, 40% Shaggy, and 10% everything else.

KayaMon 10-11-2005 03:34 AM

I must say thats the best definition for dancehall that ive ever heard. Thanks Sweboy.

Bring it back to the roots mon :thumb:

Has anybody heard Sinéad O'Connor's Throw Down Your Arms? It's an LP of twelve surprisingly convincing covers of all the greats (recorded at Tuff Gong with Sly and Robbie, so it works). Burning Spear, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, she really picked the right tracks, let's put it that way. Considering what it is, I'm really amazed at how much I like this record.

Havn't heard it...is it a recent LP? On the subject of age, i havnt been hearing many new roots reggae. The most recent bands i can think of are Bendouin Soundclash, Slightly Stoopid (anything off skunk records pretty much). I remember there being a reggae band on the forums i forget the name though. So anyone hear any newer roots bands?

JonM 10-16-2005 03:06 PM

Yeah, it just came out. The more I listen, the more it works for me.

so its a chick singing right? where did you get it? what songs are covered?

JonM 10-16-2005 03:27 PM

Err, it's Sinéad O'Connor, it's not just some "chick," but yeah.

I got it on Amazon, and it's at every CD store I've been to, plus iTunes.

Tracklist:

Jah Nuh Dead
Marcus Garvey
Door Peep
He Prayed
Y Mas Gan
Curly Locks
Vampire
Prophet Has Arise
Downpressor Man
Throw Down Your Arms
Untold Stories
War
TO EL_SHIZNIT: do you know when the new bad brains dvd or c-d is coming out, and if they are planning to do a tour?

El_Shiznit 10-17-2005 09:12 AM

I haven't heard anything new for a while. I don't think a release was ever set. And whenever it was released, they did plan on touring.
