I'll do Bouncing Souls since you were talking about it so much a few days ago

And it's Death Of Seasons, not Sessions

Rancid Dan 06-03-2005 10:36 AM

Oh well...

Kif 06-03-2005 11:01 AM

Bouncing Souls - Manthem
It starts out with a funky drum and bass intro, and gradually gets into the song. It has a very loud punky theme to it, which is really nice as well. The chords are pretty simple, but most are in pop-punk

When the singing comes in, the song is very cheery and feel-good, it is literally an anthem. I think Dexter Holland sings in it as well, not sure though. If it isn't, he sure sounds like him. When the "oi" part comes in, seems like a bit of filler but goes nicely with the song

After the second verse, the "oi" part is mixed with the chorus, it makes it really fun to listen to and just makes me want to jump around. The lyrics are your average "have fun" anthem type lyrics, and they just make the song feel that much better

Overall, I think it was great, and way up there with pop-punk anthems. The music was fitting, the lyrics were fun and the song overall had a feel-good factor to it. I didn't even notice it went on for 3 minutes with just 2 verses and 2 chorus', but they pulled it off well.

Finch - Insomniatic Meat

Well, this is quite a wierd song, quite powerful and deep.
It starts off with some wierd sounds, then a clean guitar riff comes in, and it then distorts and the vocals come in, quite nice, the music is reasonably slow, but heavy.
Then a breakdown comes in with a different singer i think, and he shouts/screams some lyrics. The music gets heavier and faster here. It then slows down again, and some softer vocals come in for a second and then it goes back to normal, the heavy guitar and music and the singing carries on, it the softens again, to being very quite, it then builds up into the chorus, which is quite melodic.

The music and vocals become wierd agian, and he sings as though he is getting suffocated or something to that effect. Screaming comes in and out. Sow guitar strokes bring it back into the chorus again. Then some backing vocals come i and he starts screaming, i really like this part of the song, it sounds really powerful. He does this until the end.
The outro is just the guitar and soem electronical instrument playing out to fade, with wierd sounds with it.

I give it a 7/10.
It's the second finch song i've heard, and much prefered this one

Ha, it seems to be only us two now.

Kif 06-04-2005 09:50 AM

Rise Against - Last Chance Blueprint
Wow, funny intro. I rather liked the little rant into the song, and the music was slow enough to fit it, I guess. It then cuts straight into the full band and vocals. The pace is fast and carries a lot of energy, and the bassline is the main highlight as it varies a lot throughout the song. Something that hardly ever happens in pop-punk/punk music nowadays

About 1:20, there's a breakdown where the drums are the main focus. There is a tiny guitar melody, and then vocals come in. It goes well, and the drums keep the momentum that they had from the start of the song. Then it cuts straight into the full band again for like 10 seconds, and then it ends.

Overall, it's short like the other Rise Against song I did, but again they have a great sound and it fits perfectly with the punk genre. The vocals aren't a strongpoint of the music, but the bass certainly made up for that

Millencolin - Farewell My Hell

Starts with a guitar bit then the whole band kicks in. Pretty fast and enegrgetic. Then the singer starts. Can't actually tell what he's saying, but it sounds cool. The fast music and gegeranally fast tempo continues. Reminds me of something The Offspring would do before they sucked.

Overall, it's a pretty badass song. A great example of Pop-Punk to play to the average Green Day/Blink-182 fan ;)

Bright Eyes - Waste of Paint (6:29)

I've never really liked Bright Eyes, as I've only heard a few songs, so I decided to give this one a listen.

Starts out with an acoustic guitar. And it's the same throughout. There isn't much to review, so I'll go through what he talks about in the verses.

Verse one is about one of Oberst's friends that draws him a picture. Oberst tells him that it's really good but his friend denies and says that nothing beautiful could ever come from him. Second verse is about a woman that is in love with a man. Then she finds out that the man had lied to her, then she decides to spend the rest of her life alone. Third verse is about Oberst's brother getting drunk and driving, and he gets pulled over. Then he tries to get out of it, but the cop can't let him go.

Alright, there's a bunch more verses that all go on the same track. I guess I'm still not a Bright Eyes fan.

Strike Anywhere - Aluminium Union

Starts strong, with music thtat sounds like everything else on Exit English. It's pretty cool. The vocalist, although I find it hard again to decipher the lyrics, does a good job, combining the normal 'hardcore/punk rock' vocals with this emotional wail that makes it actually seem that he is passionate about whatever he is on about. The music is pretty cool aswell, but it's pretty samey when listened to alongside everything else on the album. But, a solid song overall, and well worth listening to.

Our Lady Peace - Innocent
It starts out with a slow drum beat, kinda distorted. Then the guitar and vocals come in. The vocals are quite strong, and the melody is nice and fitting to the slow feel of the song.

When the song goes into the full band, it doesn't really pick up momentum or anything. It kinda just drags on. The bass adds nothing new to the mix either

The second verse is OK. The vocalist's voice gets a little higher, which shows his emotion for the lyrics. The guitar picks up a new riff, a little heavier. It still feels like it's dragging out, and just building up to something not happening yet

The bridge again has the same drum beat, the same guitar melody, the same bassline. There's nothing new about this song now, it's been playing for 2 minutes and it's all the same! It then cuts into the chorus again. The lyrics are even repetitive now

Overall, I didn't like this song. It had a good and decent promise at the start, and it feels like it's building up to a real rock song. But it just disappoints. 3 minutes of the same riffs and beats, it's not that great to listen to. This might be one of the few MP3s I delete

:( My songs always fail :p

Motion City Soundtrack - Hangman

Starts of with some feeback and stuff, which slowly develops into a tune. Then the drum beat comes in , and the singer starts. His voice is OK, would be better without the excess effects and other stuff they've done to it. Sounds like a typical pop-punk tune, with some cool effects in it. There's a quiet bit later on, with the type of vocal effects that I think work well, then it goes back to how it was before. The production isn't very good, and they should've thought of a better hook. The actual song is good though, in some parts.

It's ok, not a patch on the material from I Am The Movie Though

I'd just like to point out that the effects are just a synth, and the vocals in the quiet part are done by none other than Mark Hoppus

Guns N' Roses - Rocket Queen
I'm not a huge fan, but I'll try out new music. It starts out with a nice steady tempo, the drum fill is simple and the guitar in the background is typical GNR from what I've heard. I like the riff when it builds up and then stops.

When the vocals come in, nothing really changes in the music, which is fine because I rather like the riffs and the drumbeats. The singing is great, and the usual GNR.

In the chorus, it sounds like they use effects on the vocals, and it sounds kinda funny. It doesn't sound professional at all. Then the bridge comes up, that adds a little bit of change to the song. The riff from the start it used again, and then changed while the solo plays over the top. You can hear moans every now and again, and it just sounds like a huge joke. Still really amazing music though

Around 3:30, the song takes a dramatic change. The drumming slows down and the guitar riff changes a lot, and it adds another nice mix to the song. Bearing in mind it's 6 minutes long, that's always good in long songs. The tempo dramtically changes, and so does the tone. It has a lot more melodic feel to it.

It slowly builds up in heaviness for about 2 minutes into another solo being played over the vocals just randomly saying "No" over and over. It's a great way to finish the song with a huge build up to the solo. This solo is a lot better than the one in the first bridge, and adds a little bit of a festive feel to it actually

Overall, I really liked this song. This is how a typical hard rock song should sound like I my opinion. Over-the-top vocals mixed with hard-hitting rhythm guitars, not to fast drumming and one of the best lead guitarists in rock playing 2 solos in a song. Superb
