Moving Pictures is a good one for a Rush noob.

3rdplanet 03-23-2005 05:02 PM

Listening to The Fountain of Lamneth right now. Good Shizzle.

Arucard 03-23-2005 05:04 PM

Ive seen Rush live, and it was the most awesome live show ever. Flame walls and everything. I love Lifeson, freaking genius.

IAJP 03-23-2005 05:11 PM

Anything and everything off COS is great,
especially the Necromancer.

ToolBox 03-23-2005 05:51 PM

Okay, first time to chime in in this thread for me, but I FREAKING LOVE RUSH. I mean I can't describe the euphoria listening to Rush gives me.
The full albums I have are:
2112
Farewell to Kings
Caress of Steal (Just bought after reading this thread)
Fly by Night
Hemispheres (one of my personal favorite)
Moving Pictures
Test for Echo
Vapor Trails

If I wanted to I could break down pretty much every Rush song I've heard and tell what I love about it and how great each one is.

I'll only mention a few to save time:
YYZ (my tied-favorite instrumental song of ALL time---it is just the perfect blend of virtuosity and song writing, every instrument compliments the other.)
La Villa (another great instrumental song, just a perfect ballad.)
2112 (I mean wow, 20 minutes and I could listen to it over and over, I love the lyrics and the way its structured)
Freewill (its just so catchy)
Spirit of Radio (see Freewill :P)

I mean, being a bassist, Geddy is one of my biggest influences. He fits in the band perfectly, the perfect combination of following and then leading. Not only is he influential to me, but he influenced other greats (Harris, Les Claypool.)

Switching subjects REALLY quickly, I started to turn a few of my friends onto Rush, which is good news.)

IAJP 03-23-2005 06:02 PM

I'd probbably say my favourite Rush song is the Necromancer, closely followed by YYZ.

tsrocks48 03-23-2005 06:59 PM

I really like Distant Early Warning from Grace Under Pressure, and By-Tor and the Snow Dog from Fly by Night, both of which nobody has mentioned (I think)

the low end theorist 03-23-2005 08:43 PM

i'm going through a definite rush phrase myself. great band-all VERY talented individuals!!!! i'm learning quite a bit of their stuff on bass. one day i will master by-tor and the snow dog and bastille day!!!!! oh yeah...yyz....*drools and shakes head in disbelief*....wow.... :p

That was handled like a proffessional, seriously, well done.
:thumb:
 hehe, thanks man.

Rush need to completely redo Necromancer. If they did it with the musical and conceptual skill they have now it would be classic.

But they'll never do it. I strongly suspect that the Necromancer is counted among the songs Geddy said he listened back to (before the last tour) and decided he'll never play them again. :-/

No matter how much the fans want it, either.

Yeah, the pyro they have for "One Little Victory" on the "Feedback" tour owns. Burned my face all the way in the 16th row! **** that's hot!

Or maybe you're just that white. :p

Distant Echoes 03-23-2005 10:00 PM

I love them pyrotechnics...theexplosions really are no joke though.

Other then all the effects any band can get into, rush was one of the only bands to use a titantron for animation throughout their whole concert. Its cool because it gives you something to watch incase you dont like staring at the band play on stage for 3 hours.

Just to bring up a topic...what were some other bands that used an animation screen throughout their concerts (other then floyd)

Cain 03-23-2005 10:23 PM
Or maybe you're just that white. :p
Don't make fun.

/concedes that it is a possibility. :(

DOUBLE EDIT: Oh wait, I meant burned in terms of how hot it felt while it was on, not physically burned me like a sunburn. :p Silly ninja pirate.

FlamingCouch 03-23-2005 10:30 PM

Rush is amazing. They're one of my favorite bands, and all three members are definately three of the best musicians at their crafts.

willis2441 03-23-2005 11:00 PM

arent they canadian?

Cain 03-23-2005 11:04 PM
arent they canadian?
Yes. But they rule despite it.

I stand by my previous statement.

EDIT: Hmm. That was funnier in my head.

You suck. :upset: :upset: :upset:

:) Oh well. We all have to make an off one every now and then, yes?

Steerpike 03-23-2005 11:14 PM

I think I used up most of the funny in the jokes thread earlier.

It's possible. :) Whatever. How are you tonight?

Steerpike 03-23-2005 11:23 PM

Same old grind. Having some interesting mood swings in my music though. Running Wild, Jimmy Cliff, Boston, and Candlemass.

You?

I'm ok. Had a tiring day at work, and driving home in the middle of our blizzard was utter hell...I had to inch up a mountain at 15 miles an hour and it was a nightmare.

I had manicotti for dinner though, which rocked. I'm listening to some downloads that AntiHero put up.

rivendell 03-24-2005 12:40 AM

Rush is the bees knees! I've been buying there albums in chronological order for some time know, and I have to say there all some of the best albums I own! I have to get Hemispheres, the next own in order.
And the fact that there from Cananda just makes them better!

Steerpike 03-24-2005 12:42 AM
Rush is the bees knees!
Wow, I don't think I've heard that expression since I wrote that pulp fiction screenplay.

The Half Pint 03-24-2005 12:51 AM

Rush rox my sox.

They're great in concert so see them if they're ever in your town.

thunderzstruck 03-24-2005 11:02 AM

rush is awesome

thunderzstruck 03-24-2005 09:54 PM

So what's your overall fav. song by rush?

FlamingCouch 03-24-2005 10:02 PM

Spirit of the Radio or Earthshine.

Cain 03-25-2005 12:02 AM
So what's your overall fav. song by rush?
La Villa Strangiato, Hemispheres, and probably either the Spirit of Radio or Marathon. The Big Money, The Weapon, Digital Man, and Analog Kid are all up there too.

And then 2112. :)

Permanent Solution 03-25-2005 12:06 AM

I think Bastille Day.

Cain 03-25-2005 12:07 AM
I think Bastille Day.
Really? Why?

Permanent Solution 03-25-2005 12:09 AM
Really? Why?
One of the first ones I ever heard, and I don't know, I just like it for no good reason...plus I can play it :)

IAJP 03-25-2005 07:04 AM

My favourite Rush song is The Necromancer,
mainly because:
It has around 3 different sections,
It has a really weird and atmospheric undertone to it,
The Lyrics are mind blowing,
As always with Rush, superb instrumentation.

kas_ofi 03-25-2005 07:15 AM
So what's your overall fav. song by rush?
...Xanadu, A farewell to kings, Natural science, The spirit of radio and La villa strangiato.

Thunder Fingers 03-25-2005 07:33 AM

thunderzstruck 03-25-2005 11:28 AM

The Spririt of Radio (first song i ever heard by them) and 2112 are my fav.

Steerpike 03-25-2005 12:27 PM

Spirit of Radio is a favorite of mine. I wish I could play that good. Sadly... I just can't. :upset:

Thunder Fingers 03-25-2005 12:48 PM

spirit of the radio aint that hard.. have you tried to play it? realy.. it goes in a e Major scale all the way...

the verse riff goes 1, 5, 3, flatted 4 and 5...

BludgeonySteve 03-25-2005 01:33 PM

I think i've had every Rush song stuck in my head at one point or another. That's awesome.
