Reagan Youth - USA

Starts out with standard power chords and a basic tom beat on the drums. Drummer hits the snare a few times and goes onto a little standard punk beat while the guitar continues with the simple stuff. Repeats, and then the vocals start. It continues under the vocals. Then chorus. Second verse has different guitar. Sounds pretty cool. Chorus again. Another verse, returns to the first verse guitar. Ends with the chorus.

InDK- All 41

Starts off with some ok guitar nothing I've never heard before. Sounds like just another generic punk band. Some "woah's" here and there and "One Two's." Its a pretty heavy punk song with one guitar doing all the heavy palm mutted power chords im guessing and then the second guitar is playing the higher stuff. The chorus is very refreshing. Ahh here we go. Somewhat of a solo. Sounds like an Anti-Flag solo. It stunk itself up once it started repeating itself (I'm reffering to the solo.) Well i guess its not a solo cuz its doing it again as the outro. Very ****ty outtro the song could have done with out. Well i guess overall i give this one a: 5.75/10

Johnny Winter - Rock Me Baby

I must say, ALL versions of this song are good, it's a classic. Johnny's guitar work is especially incredible all throughout, he might be the whitest ****er ever to play the blues. The vocals are decently orginal the way he sings it, which few people who do this song pull off.

Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing

Starts off with some fast drumming then the guitar kicks in. This is a shorter song (1:31) the vocals are just a punk screaming singing voice haha. Then their is a breif yet good guitar solo. The quality of the recording kinda sounds like it was recorded in the bands basement (and may very well be I dont know). I liked the song and give it a 6/10

System of a Down: Soil
I'm not a fan of System of a down, but for a song with a new-metal feel this is alright. The lyrics aren't incredible, yet aren't necessarily bad. I think the singing is sort of obnoxious and the guitar line is repetitve. The bass is decent, and the drums aren't technically good yet succeed in keeping the beat.

I'd say it's a 5/10, not that great yet not unbearable, though I wouldn't sit down and listen to it on any regular basis.

My suggestions:

The Rolling Stones - Hand of Fate (Rock n Roll [if you're into stuff like the Clash, you'll love it)
Television - Prove It (Guitar Punk)
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Travelin' Band (Rock)
The Doors - Five To One (Political Rock)
MC5 - Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa) (Proto-Punk, watch out for the guitar solo!)

BlastFunk03 03-15-2005 07:05 PM

MC5-Rocket Reducer No.26

Starts off with crowd clapping and cheering, which is pretty much how all MC5 songs I’ve heard begin. Then the singer says something like “right now, right now, rama lama fa fa fa in the (I have no idea). Then the guitar starts building up and there’s some heys, and yeahs. The guitar fades into feedback with smashing drums, and then fades back in with random riffs. At about 1:45 the song actually begins with crunchy spontaneous guitar and really energetic vocals. The whole song is raw energy and sounds best recorded in the live environment. It brings one back to a time before music studio magic and touch ups. I couldn’t really recognize a solid verse/chorus structure, however, the solo at the end makes up for it. The entire first part of the song is kind of one long intro leading up to the solo, which concludes it. This is a stripped down punk rock song, with emphasis on the rock.

This song is one of great examples of ska music, and shows how much *** ska music kicks. id give this song a 8.5/10 i really liked it but a guitar solo would of bin nice. :thumb:

Rage Against the Machine - Know Your Enemy

Starts off with some crazy guitar noises. A decent guitar riff, and then everything else kicks in. I really like the riff for the verses. That shiz is off tha hook. The song progresses like any other RATM song. The breakdown is pretty gay and slow with some soul singer doing the vocals. gh3y. Some weird RATM-esque guitar solo. ect.. ect... end.

Minutemen-Bob Dylan wrote propaganda songs

This is the first song I’ve heard by the minutemen. It’s quite short(1:29). It starts off with a bassline, then the palm muted guitar comes in. The vocals are half screamed and half sung. During the chorus the guitar plays a few un-muted a power chords. After the first chorus there’s a small guitar solo and after the second there’s another one, the song ends after the second solo. The lyrics arent really anything special. They kind of remind me for some reason of crass(musically), but I hope they can do better than this 5/10

I chose this because I've never listened to any Sick on the Bus songs before. It's nothing really different, but it's still a great song. Lots of energy which I love. It's really short (1:25), but that cool because it's solid all the way through, I give it an 8/10.

Nausea-Self Destruct

This song has a Leftover Crack meets F Minus sound to it. It begins slowly, with a continuous rolling drum beat and leisurely strummed guitar. It keeps the same pace, and both male and female vocals come in, being sung simultaneously. The guys got a deep gritty metal voice and the girl sounds pretty constipated, like the stereotypical female punk voice. In the middle there’s an echoed, laid back solo. I thought it might speed up towards the end, but the tempo remained constant. This would have made it a whole lot better, because the slowness gets boring and makes it harder to take the song seriously. However, it’s not a bad song. The solo, which sounds like a secret agent theme, saves it. 6/10

CKY was one of those bands "Bam Margera" makes it what it is. CKY was a band ive heard of but never listened to so this gives me the opportunity, so here it goes.

This song starts off getting right into things the guitar work is nice and the vocals were unexpected, i was expecting more agressive vocals but these are nice and mellow. The bass line is nice and the drums are well done, Although the song seems to repeat its self with a repetive guitar riff and it would of bin very nice to have a nice guitar solo, i was waiting for one but to my surprise the song just repeats and then faids off. I was Surprisingly dissapointed with this song but maybe another CKY song wont hurt to check out. Id give this song a 6/10

Aus Rotten - Denied
It starts of with a nice slow riff that's quite heavy with some intermittent blast of fast drumming that sound almost likea drum-machine that you'd use in Grindcore. When the music kicks in the riff is fairly standard and repetitive. One guy sings, then two guys exchanging lines on the chorus, then the second guy, then they exchange lines again. The lyrics are good, from what I can make out and the vocals are okay. I preferred the second guy's voice. After this the music fades out and guy #2 says something about 'the fucking system.' I assume he's talking about the government and using the expletive for emphasis rather than referring to some kinky system of sex practices. It goes into another riff when some really cool and chaotic drumming with more vocals before fading out and going back into the preivous riff. There's some more vocals before an extended chorus and the song finishes with both dudes saying 'WE ARE DENIEDDD!" This song was okay. It did get a bit repetitive but it was short so that wasn't so bad. 6/10

Or if you're oi_bass77:

There some guitars and then drums. Then more guitars. Then singing. Then another guy singing. Then it carries on til the end. I didn't like this song because there was no raping. And I love raping! I'll rape anything! 3/10 wow 3 lines. longwinded or what!

Tom Waits - Singapore

Starts off with a jungly kind of beat. Really upbeat. Waits starts singing in his trademark drunk hobo voice. The beat keeps its upbeatness throughout. Waits lyrics are kind of hard to make out because of his voice, but they go along well with the music, raising and falling with the symplisitic beat of the song. You can't help move along to the song, it is reallt catchy. The lyrics I can make out from Waits are kind of nonsensical, like a lot of songs, but they are still really good. 1:40 in the beat changes a bit, still the up-down, with an added horn. After a bit of that it goes back to the same beat. There is various different instruments playing little riffs along side the basic riff. A bass line comes in next, and then the sounds of a rain storm starting. This ends the song. A very good Waits song, very up beat.

Jello Biafra-Mascot Mania

Begins with fast rockabilly classic sounding country guitar and fast saloon piano. It has a punkish Johnny Cash vibe in the instrumentals. It’s basically a facetious little tune about sports. I couldn’t really detect any underlying metaphors; nothing too inventive in the lyrics. There are some scattered short cow-punk guitar solos dividing the song. Towards the end, the instruments break down and there’s some “real” sports team names stated, followed by some fancy guitar action. Overall, I found it a little generic and boring. The blend of musical styles comes off somewhat awkward. It does have a very bad ass quality to it though. 6/10

Misfits- Dead Kings Rise (this is from the demo version on Cuts From The Crypt)

Begins with a simple repeating drum rhythm before some melodic humming comes in after around 7 seconds. This intro goes on until about 30 seconds when a guitar cuts in before the songs pauses. A simple repeating rhythm launches the song off again before, and the singing begins after around 50 seconds. The singing is typically "ghoulish", playing upto the Misfits image. It's a very melodic song, and Graves' vocals are backed up by melodies by the rest of the band throughout the song, until it breaks down to an outro that matches the intro.

It's not a bad song, one of the best i've heard from this era of the misfits. There is nothing flashy about the song, with little in the way of solos other than the simple one by the drum on the intro.

The intro to this song is basically a lost kid and an older man discussing career opportunities. The verse is very ska-like: upbeat guitar, cool bassline, horns(I’m not really good at this but id say it’s a trumpet and a saxophone). The vocals are sung and there are backing vocals that join in every now and then. The chorus is more rock’n’roll and extremely catchy. It basically goes: ‘’King Arthur the great! Woa! Don’t be late!’’ I can imagine this being an awesome song played live. The second verse is similar to the first, and after the second chorus there’s a cool little solo. Nothing too complicated though, then there’s an interlude. Right before the end the guitar stops playing, and the vocals and horns basically end the song(except for the last riff the guitar plays). In all this is a very good song. 9,5/10

The Varukers-How Do You Sleep

Begins with drums, guitar and ringing feedback slowly fading in. At about 20 seconds the music gets somewhat vicious with some sick metal palm mutes and what not. The intro goes for a long time, changing to a punkier progression, then some instrument breakdowns, which come back in with more speed. The vocals start and sound exactly as id expect. Overall, it’s like what Death by Stereo would sound like when they were in high school. After the short segment of poorly screamed lyrics there’s a too-short solo, which is the high point of the song. The vocals come back and go to the end. The band seems to have an arrogant approach to the song, because it lacks structure balance, the singing is pretty off and the intro is way too long. Its not bad background music, though. Danzig - The Coldest Sun

I haven't heard a lot of Danzig myself, but I've heard a lot of bad things about this band. I can understand why a lot of people wouldn't like this, but I personally thought it was alright. It has a very industrial feel to it, with heavy bass and the whole vocal effects deal, and Danzig's singing works very well for metal music. My only problem is that it's SO REPETITIVE. At first I figured maybe it was to put more focus on the lyrics, but even those seem like they're only there for filler. The first 1:30 or so are great, but it gets old really quickly. Very heavy, very different, and sadly, very repetitive. I'm willing to hear other songs though, because the band sounds like it has a ton of potential. In fact, I can't even decide which band Glenn Danzig sounded better in. It's repetitive, but this was probably just a filler track.

The begins right in with the main guitar line that goes through a large part of the song.It is a pretty basic guitar part. After that line repeats 4 times the vocals come in, and I realized it was Davey Havok singing. When it gets to the chorus, you can notice the vocal similarities with AFI with the "Whoa's" backing up Daveys singing. The song is basic in structure, just verse chorus verse chorus etc. I rather like the song on the whole the vocals and music fit really well together. It has a cool feeling that is tough to explain but I like it quite a bit. I give it a 7/10

Embrace - Give Me Back

I'm going to be comparing this to band to Minor Threat a lot in my review, because I was so impressed by the change Ian McKaye's made in his lyrics and stuff.

I'd never heard Embrace before, but I was really missing out. It has a kind of post-punk feel to it, and I figured for different music types Ian would change his singing style. However, it's the same, and it couldn't have worked more perfectly for the music. I was impressed yet again that they were able to have what sounds like angsty lyrics about emotions and be even more interesting than what Ian was usually writing about in Minor Threat. The music itself sounds like a more talented and detailed take on punk music, and even though there isn't a huge change in it throughout the song, it's complex enough to keep you from getting bored. I'd like to end this review by saying that I have to hear the rest of the album, and Embrace > Minor Threat.

Crass- Have a nice day

Well I've obviously heard lots of stuff about crass and I listened to 'em a while back but what I heard was really bad and made me want to rip me ears out. The song was really crunchy and greasy and disorganized and not much to listen to but on to this review.. Alright the song starts off with a guy introducing crass and then a really distorted guitar comes on playing some punkish stuff but its so distorted you can barely hear anything besides fuzz. During this part of the song some guys talking in the background. After about 30 seconds of that theres a pause. After a couple of seconds the song gets really awesome. What the guitar was playing before is alot easier to hear and its a slight bit faster. The riff is really awesome and made me wanna dance around the room. The singer's voice is okay but its hard to make out what he says. Well all in all this song was really great after that little pause. I'll give it an 8/10 even though only about 3/4 of the song is really really good.

Then a "Jaws" -esque riff starts adn then right in to a fast short punk song. The 2 people talking at the beginning start talking again about how all their food wa eaten etc. Then another short fast burst of sound. The song finishes at 1:22. I liked the song, it fast paced and kinda funny. The music in the song is pretty standard, simple power chords etc. It's short and fun. 7/10

This song kicks off with a melodic lick which goes into a heavy intro kinda thing. Now...I'm kicking myself for laughing at the lyrics...i feel so harsh but i just couldn't help myself "Coz ever since you rode your bike into that car...." What's wrong with me?
Anyway...this is the first I've heard of this band and what I like about them...well the song, is that its so hard to categorise it, like some bands are always associated with the Skater Punk *cough*Sum 41*cough* and we get stereotypical and its a vicious circle. I think it's a good song, some nice riffs in the chorus and melodies in the verses. Good clear lyrics, and with some actual meaning behind em, and none of the same old love or politics bollox we've been hearing so much of lately. Anyway, good song...I like, another band which I'm gonna look into....so yeh....good work...

Eric Clapton-Classical gas
Eric Clapton, blues icon, rock god, and now classical genius. This starts off with a nice fingerpicked lick (Using thumb to hit bass notes, and fingers higher notes at the same time). It kicks into the full song and it is really nice. He uses hammer ons and pull offs so well. The chorus type lick (octave higher than the rest of the song) is really nice. I am beginning to doubt this is on an actual classical style guitar, as it is definitely steel stringed, or at least the version I have. I know that this song was not originally written by him (Some spainish guy), as a finishing note. All in all, this is a great song. Although it is a one piece instrumental it kept me interested right until the finishing chord, I give it a 9/10.

Tom Waits - Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis 4:33

Alright, I haven't heard anything by Tom Waits but I've heard loads of good things about him, especially from older folk, but that's too be understood.

"Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis" Starts on a piano and organ melody. It has a very relaxing jazzy feel to it. Soon someone starts singing, I'm assuming it's Tom Waits. He has a raspy voice like Curtis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." The main focus of this song is defintley the singing/lyrics. The story is a depressing one, drugs, pregnancy and death, all being to told to Charlie. Even at three minutes in not much has changed except the story continues on with it's heartbreak. I don't find it one bit boring thus far. At Four minutes in things start to settle down a little and a final twinkle on the piano ends the tune, Bravo!

I'm assuming not of his stuff is like this even though I enjoyed it I want to see where else Tom Waits goes musically. I'll have to check out one of his albums.

White Stripes - Air Near My Fingers

I didn't like the White Stripes when I first heard them, but over the years I heard a couple of songs by them that sounded really good. Haven't heard this one so I hope I like it.

Yeah, thats garage, simple drum beat with a loud guitar chord progression. It goes quiet for the verse, electric piano? The guy sings in a fast way, then does a do-be-do type bit. It does this twice, not sounding real great to me so far. Goes harder for a bit with a piano crash.

The next verse is just saying "I get nervous when she comes around". After that theres a bit of synth clarinet over the intro riff which sounds kind of cool, then another verse much the same as the first 2. Fades out doing the synth clarinet part again.

It doesn't change much at all, but that was ok since it didn't seem to drag either. I liked the clarinet riff for some reason, it was sort of catchy. But there was nothing special in the rest of the song, so I found it pretty uninteresting. At least it didn't annoy me much. 5.5/10

Weddings Parties Anything - A Tale They Won't Believe

Starts off with a bouncy guitar and mandolin riff. Goes to lyrics quickly with a simple drum and bass backing. The lyrics are telling a sea story. Picks up after awhile, guitar and mandolin come back in. There is a little chrous of insturmentation, and back to the simple backing. The lyrics get better with the story, about men searching for food, mainly humans. The music picks up as the lyrics continue about the hunt. The next chrous type is about one of the missing, being eaten. Story continues. It's a good story, I like it, really intresting with a nice musical background. The next man falls to being eaten after being bitten by a snake, and lagging behind. Next set of lyrics about the final two looking to each other, which one will have to go. It ends up being the other, leaving the story teller as the last cannibal. There's an insturment break here, and back to the main bouncy guitar and mandolin riff. Really sea shanty like, very nice. Drum background comes back with strums on the guitar ringing out. Then the lone drum as the story continues. The next batch about the stroyteller not being believed of what he did. The song ends with the storyteller eating another man. Very good song, I liked it. 9/10

Hank Williams III - Hellbilly Joker

Right away you can tell it's a psychobilly song, or heavily influenced by psychobilly, whatever. The vocals sound poorly recorded, but it doesn't have a negative effect on MY opinion on the song. Those vocals are definitely more of the country part of the song and so are the lyrics- "If you don't like our hillbilly (hellbilly?) sound then hey man GO FUCK YOU!". But not like the crappy mainstream country you hear on CMT (Why would you watch that, faggot?), faster and less of a "I'm a cowboy and Jesus saves" feeling. There's a starting somewhere 1:10 and 1:20, and the song continues for another minute after that. Ok, if you like psychobilly you should like this song, and maybe the rest of the album, and don't be thrown off by the country part, because it's good. 8.5/10

The Rudiments - Wailing Paddle

I've heard some Rudiments stuff before and I'd found it either pretty average or really good so I didn't know how this song would turn out. The song starts with a very slow walking bassline before kicking into some cool ska with an absolutely awesome bassline. The vocals kick in pretty quickly. They're okay and so are the lyrics but they're not as good as the music. After about 50 seconds it goes into the punky chorus. The music is still great and the vocals are still pretty average. Then there's another cool little section that bridges the gap between the ska and the punk. After the next chorus there's a different section with just the drums and some cheesy backing vocals that's pretty cool then there's anothere ska section with some cool dual vocals and some Against Me! style WOOOOAH! This is a great third wave ska song. The music is brilliant throughout (especially the bass) and theough the vocals are nothing special they fit the song pretty well and they don't prevent this being a really good song. 9/10

The Specials - New Era

The song starts out with a kind of rolling intro, and then settles into a somewhat repetative riff. The Lyrics don't feel to complex. About a minute in, the speed changes into a slower, more reggae beat for a soloish section, and then returns to the earlier riff. The Outro is the same kind of beat as the Intro.

The sound quality is a bit rough, but overall, it fits the song. Not the best Specials song I've heard, but still gets a 7/10.

The Depressions - Living On Dreams

Before listening to the band I did a bit of research on them. I discovered that they were going to have a more poppy sound than most. While listening to the song for some odd reason it reminded me strongly of the beach boys. It starts off with a catchy guitar break that remains throughout the whole song in sometimes, an altered form. The drums are a simple one-toned beat that follows along well with the bass. So in the background the break plays and the guitar about 1:40 in breaks into a huge solo. "'Coz it's mean, can't you see we get mean from living on dreams." A very repetitive poppy song but at the same time it's really good. I also like the lyrics. 7/10.

Against me-miami

To be honest, this is the second against me song I’ve heard, the first I deleted after listening to it once. The intro is some undistorted guitar chords followed by notes. Then it plays a rather high chord, stops playing for a few seconds, then starts again and the vocals come in. The vocals are half sung, half screamed, almost exactly like I like them(his voice reminds me a bit of lars frederiksens). The bass is at first very quiet then comes in louder and gives the song a little ‘’groove’’. The chorus is pretty catchy, kind of a pretty typical punk chorus, but what makes the song original is that the guitar is undistorted, it sounds really cool. After the chorus there’s a short interlude, can’t really describe it though. The song ends after the second chorus. In all it’s a very good song, and I’ll probably be downloading some more ‘’against me’’ very soon. 9,5/10

The Dead Pets- Uncal Festa (punk 'n' roll)

For those of you in the UK, some of you may recognise this singer as the bloke who featured in the channel 4 programme Faking It, performing and passing as an Opera Singer.

This song kicks off with two English slappers talking aboutbeing hos, the possiblity of them going out getting wasted and f'ucking anyone and the chances of them using protection.

The music kicks in after around 32 seconds, meaning this masterpiece closks in at just over 1 min 45 seconds. The guitar leads it off into the intro, and is soon backed by trumpet and sax (i think), and 'laugh' vocals. It launches off into the chorus very early and is a hilarious exceptional sing along- 'uncal festa, child molesta, picks up kids in a white fiesta'. The vocals continue at a qucik speed throughout the song, backed by a nice tuneful melody from the rest of the band. The vocals are very impressive throughout, and he often rolls his tongue around to change the sound and add spice.

There is a small guitar breakdown after around a minute, which brings back the 'laughter' vocals before the band launch back into another fast paced verse about the trend of modern women going out, getting wasted and acting like hos.

The band plays very fast and simple throughout, making this a classic punk song. Excellent, everyone should take the chance to see this band.

Sham 69 - Hurry Up Harry

A song by the classic and possibly greatest Oi band Sham 69. Since hearing some material from this band before, I had expected it to be a relatively well done song.

The song starts off in a normal guitar stroke with immediate chorus lyric intervention "Come on, come on." While the vocals kick in, the music dies down but still stays in the same as the beginning until it gets to "We're going down the pub, We're going down the pub." Where the guitar hits higher notes. The lyrics describe a british boy and his friends going out for a drink. It's a very typical Oi song. The song is interesting because it beings with the chorus going, chorus, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse, chorus. At about 2:25 a very catchy piano tune plays and brings your concentration back to the song, afterwards it delves into "Come on, come, we're going down the pub." The guitar is the same chords and strokes throughout the whole song.

Although the song did not let me down I have heard much better songs from Sham 69. Songs such as Evil Way, If The Kids Are United, and I Gotta Survive. A very good, but typical Sham song I give it a 6/10.
