scenes from a memory is probly my fav album, followed by images and words, but no matter how many times i try to understand the story line, it's never quite clear. Did "the miricle" kill both victoria and "the sleeper", then plant a fake suicide letter on them? my question really is "explain to story on SFAM?"
|
is it? I've was a little bit confused with the ending...
Yeah it signifies how life can abruptly end. |
My first albums were Images and Words and Awake. Awake still remains to be my fav, though IAW does have Learning to Live on it... I really need 6DOIT. May get it for Christmas and the Budokan Dvd..

lets get some conversation going again. Which MP's drum kit do you prefer between the awake kit, the purple monster and the siamese monster? I love the awake kit.
1)the colors are cool 2)its big without being huge. |
I think the Siamese Monster is awsome, so **** big
Yeah, that has to be the most commonly asked question related to Dream Theater.
When I first got it I downloaded it, and I just thought "Oh, another retard on Kazaa has screwed it up"
Would it suprise you that i thought exatly the same :) |
?
Was listening to songs from the live at Budokan cd, some of the most boring **** ive ever heard IMO, they arent called Dream Theater for nothing, its enough to put you to sleep
Dude, you're a ****ing fagot. You have no sense of music at all. First of all there is not one thing boring about Dream Theater. Second of all, your name...maynard sucks..?? What the **** are you thinking??? He is one of the best singers out there. When you read this review, get a gun and shoot yourself, because someone with your music sense should die |

thanks :chug: i had always wondered what the hell happened right at the end....... if thats the story, how the hell does metropolis part 1 fit into the whole scheme of things? (apart from the musical ideas that were passed on) |
Here’s my interpretation of metropolis part I. I think this song is a summary of SFAM.
Key:Lyrics Notes The smile of dawn Arrived early May She carried a gift from her home The night shed a tear To tell her of fear And of sorrow and pain She'll never outgrow I think this verse is about the death of Victoria (Death is the first dance, eternal) I was told there's miracle for each day that I try I was told there's a new love that's born for each one that has died I was told there'd be no one to call on when I feel alone and afraid I was told if you dream of the next world You'll find yourself swimming in a lake of fire I think this is Victoria talking/thinking after her breakup with Julian As a child, I thought I could live without pain without sorrow As a man I've found it's all caught up with me I'm asleep yet I'm so afraid I think this is Nicolas talking of his dreams about Victoria (his past life) Somewhere like a scene from a memory There's a picture worth a thousand words Eluding stares from faces before me It hides away and will never be heard of again This is Nicolas talking about is hypnotherapy and how it helped him to see things clearly Deceit is the second without end Sorry, I can’t figure out this line The city's cold blood teaches us to survive Just keep my heart in your eyes and we'll stay alive The third arrives... I think this verse is about love (the third arrives)…. Before the leaves have fallen Before we lock the doors There must be the third and last dance This one will last forever Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles She's taken you to your home I think that here, metropolis = Victoria. This verse summarize “the spirit carries on” It can only take place When the struggle between our children has ended This verse tells us that love can only take place when the fight between Victoria(metropolis), Julian(the sleeper), and Ed (the miracle) has ended. Now the Miracle and the Sleeper know that the third is love Love is the Dance of Eternity I think everybody can understand this verse! Okay, this is MY interpretation of the song. Yet its really complicated and i'm pretty sure I'm wrong in some place. Enjoy! |
Very nice. I'm still trying to completely understand every line of Metropolis part 1 and 2 and how they relate. That helped alot.
thanks2u |
Well, Quebec, your explanation would make sense except for the fact that Part II (SFAM) is a continuation or further rendition of I. So it really doesn't add up the way you put it.
From DTFAQ's:
What is Metroplis Part I Based On? It is based on the story of a telepathically-linked Romulus and Remus from Virgil's "Aeneid". It has no relation to the 1927 movie "Metropolis". Petrucci wrote it as a sort of fantasy epic, inspired by the likes of Yes and Rush. The story itself is original (the twins are named Miracle and Sleeper and do not appear in literature) but the story type was Homeric. It is linked to part 2 (Scenes From A Memory) in that Edward and Julian Baynes are metaphors for Romulus and Remus, and Victoria is a metaphor Rome (or the 'Metropolis'). This is supported by several lyrical lines in SFAM.
|
I hope someone can post the meaning of metropolis Part 1 and 2
it seems really interesting but complicated. |

Shut up. Just shut up. Using "faggot" as a negative term for gay people is first horribly tasteless and second will not change anybody's mind. He's a pretty close-minded kid from what he said, but you are the bigger idiot and have proven nothing by what you said. |

"what can go wrong will go wrong"... At least I tried! |
Eh...Pardon me to break up the argument but does Petrucci use many effects? Ive heard a wah (Voices, Glass Prison) and ive heard a phaser (This Dying Soul) but does he use any other effects in his songs like flange, tremelo, or backwards effects ever?
|
He uses an array of effects, too many for me to name. I dont know what you mean by backwards effects; but i read once that for the guitar solo in 'misunderstood', petrucci wrote the solo, learnt it backwards, and then once it was recorded it was then reversed again.

Thats different, about the solo |

He uses many effects.. He has a huge pedal board with all the tones for each songs programmed in it! (See "live at Budokan" DVD disc2) |
:upset: This thread is on page 8? :upset: anyway... anyone seen DT live? I never did cuz when they came in my area, it was 19+... They also came with YES this summer in montreal but I dont really like yes so I didn't waste my money!

I've seen DVDs.
That counts... |

I wish it did count... :upset: Oh well, they don't look very exciting anyway. If Petrucci didn't have to concentrate so hard on what he was playing. At least Alex Lifeson hops around and makes faces and does impromptu comedy sketches...saw it myself at a Rush show in August. 16th row seats! |
I really wish I could see them live...
|
I don't find Petrucci to be in a state of heavy concentration that often. He usually isn't even looking at his guitar as he plays, just making funny faces or simply looking around at the audience. (My personal favorite thing that the two main soloing members of DT, Petrucci and Rudess do, is when doing bends or wah parts, they'll sometimes move their mouths like they are speaking the parts  Can't really explain it, just watch LaB)

Vai's got that bug REAL bad. So do I, for that matter. |

YEah, I wish Petrucci would look more like a human than a statue during shows... well, I think it's better that way, he doesn't mess up his parts! |

OMG me too! WEE R TEH K00L! |
Ok, I don't know if this has been asked in this thread before... I don't really wanna bother reading the 7 past pages.

Somewhat moved from general revelery:
I'm going out to the local music store today, and while searching for a new artist I remembered Dream Theatre. Would they be interesting to a person who likes AC/DC, Amon Amarth, and lots in between? If so, what is a good album? From what i've heard, i'm thinking Shange Of Seasons or Awake. |
Awake is my favorite album by them, favorite song off that album is Scarred.
