how often do you listen to a floyd album?
i only have the records for the wall and dstom, i listen to the wall about once a week cuz its so long, but dsotm is less than 45 minutes so i listen to it usually every day..im kinda addicted to it.

Riva 10-18-2004 04:39 PM

All the time. I usually have music on while I am at home, or in the car, and Pink Floyd are a big part of my rotation.
Really? What parts relate to what? I thought it was just a stoner trip... :p
The entire concept. Animal Farm is a George Orwell book about Communist Russia, which is the basis for the Pigs, Dogs and Sheep. The Pigs are the smartest of the Animals who can seek control over the entire farm (Stalin). The Dogs are the animals who are strong and vicious, but do what the Pigs tell them too in order to gain personall success (The Russian Police force, I forget the name at the moment). The Sheep are the stupid animals that follow whatever the Pigs say because they think whatever the Pigs say is the best. If the sheep ever get out of line, then the Pigs use to Dogs to control the sheep.

If you read the lyrics to Dogs, Pigs (Three Different Ones) , and Sheep, you can find the relation.
cool didn't think that many people knew :thumb:
Yea, I said that in the Classic Rock Thread.

the mighty zep 10-18-2004 05:22 PM

Thats the fourth of four different concepts ive heardin translation of the Animals albums...im so confused now.

Pretty funny though, most of you probably know this, but during the photo shoot of the Floating pig above the power plant, the pig broke lose and flew around the country side for a little less than a day i think, and when it approached a nearby airport, a pilot radio'd into the control tower reporting a 'flying pink pig' while landing.

And i also tryed that Dark side of Oz deal this weekend, and its pretty crazy. It didnt work halfway through the movie cause it was recorded off TV from 1980 somethin by my parents, so ill need to get the 50th anniversary DVD. But i defintaly wont buy it, i dont even like that movie, but the first hour was pretty sweet with the album. There are alos other ways ive read about, first playing DSOTM 3 times; playing DSOTM, then Animals, then tracks 2-5 of Division Bell; or DSOTM and The Wall disc 1. probably wont try that, but to anyone who does, let me know if it works out any better.

lunch998 10-18-2004 05:26 PM

What other translations of Animals are there? That is the overall point, obviously there are numerous smaller points, such as the different people Waters attacks in "Pigs(Three Different Ones)". Also in Dogs, the "Stone" is Water's sign of depression and negativity which leads to the him writing "The Wall".

I wrote a review on Animals at http://s3.invisionfree.com/music_discussion
I don't know if that link will work but if you go there and then under "CD Reviews" you can find it.

I heard something about how certain The Wall songs blend in with certain WYWH songs. i.e. The end of one blends in to the start of the other. Of the top of my head, though, I can't think of any that might do this. Anyone else heard about this?

Riva 10-19-2004 01:35 AM

Anyone?

Permanent Solution 10-19-2004 01:46 AM

Nope

gmoneyguy 10-19-2004 09:09 AM

Wywh?

Kingofdudes 10-19-2004 09:51 AM

Wish you were here

Jude 10-19-2004 03:20 PM

I don't think Animals is really equivalent to Animal Farm. It's more addressed to British society at the time. Dogs is about the rich and powerful, pigs is about the government, Sheep is about the common people...

I dont even know what your talking about

You mean when you play the wall (disc 1) over WYWH, they would blend or somethin?

if you explain ill try it right now

Maybe it's real, but it sounds like a hoax to me. Like the whole DSOTM/Wizard of Oz synch thing... its only there because people want to believe its there. It really doesn't work that well at all.

DesolationRow 10-19-2004 04:20 PM

I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. I don't have a favorite CD but my favorite songs include Brain Damage, Comfortably Numb, Time, Money, Wish You Were Here, Great Gig in the Sky, Run Like Hell, and Hey You. The last solo in comfortably numb is an amazing piece of music. The bassline to Money is usually stuck in my head all day. Pink Floyd is in the top 3 of my greatest bands ever.

jangus 10-19-2004 04:26 PM
i am a huge pink floyd fan, and The Wall and DSOTM are great, and though it doesnt have very many songs, Wish You Were Here(not just the song, the entire album) was great, the song WYWH is great, along with Welcome to the machine, Have a cigar, and i have never met anyone that didnt like Shine On You Crazy Diamond(dedicated to their first main songwriter, syd barret, who suffered from mental complications after their first album)

overall, Money is great for his awesome tenor sax parts by Dick Parry(i play tenor sax so its a weakness of mine), and WYWH is one of my fav songs ever, but the most haunting lyrics come from "Speak To Me/Breathe"

for long you'll live and high you'll fly, for smiles you'll give and tear's you'll cry, for all you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be - Speak To Me/Breathe, Dark Side Of The Moon Album
I love when people try to sound like they know a lot about Pink Floyd, and then spell Barrett wrong (and his mental complications were during and after Piper)
Brain damage has fairly haunting lyrics, talking about insanity and whatnot.

I have been listening to Pink Floyd a lot over the past few months and with every cd I am continually blown away. A truly amazing band. Favourite song at the moment would have to be Dogs, the middle section is just brilliant and the harmonized guitar solos are one of the best. But one song I never see mentioned anywhere is Fearless off Meddle. It would definately have to be one of the best songs off that album apart from the obvious, echoes. anyone else agree?

anyway enough of my rambling its great to see another pink floyd thread, there hasnt been one for a while.
I'll have to disagree. Besides Echoes, I say San Tropez, then One of These Days, then Fearless.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band. I have every album of theirs. My favorite is Meddle or Wish You Were Here. The most haunting lyrics are from Dogs. Roger Waters was a genius.

I really hate Money and Another Brick in the Wall (part 2).
Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a chapter from the book A Wind in the Willows. Thats where it comes from.
Thats where the TITLE comes from.

And Rick Wright did some back vocals too. Such as on Echoes.

RedHedFighter666 10-19-2004 04:40 PM

i heard if u listen to darkside of the moon from the very beginning of the wizard of oz, its supppost to make sense....idk cuz i havent seen the wizard of oz cuz its a gay movie

RedHedFighter666 10-19-2004 04:41 PM

my friend told me this cuz she put the movie on mute and listened to the album

thewormyourhonor 10-19-2004 04:41 PM
If you hate the Wall so much, then what's up with your Screen name
grrr i dont hate the wall! i just get pissed off when a great band has a selection of songs that people obsess over when they have much better work that is being ignored!!!

thewormyourhonor 10-19-2004 04:45 PM
Dark Side is probably overrated, but maybe some people have heard a lot of Pink Floyd and still prefer WYWH. I personally think WYWH is slightly overrated, but its still great. Then again I have heard almost all Pink Floyd, and I can say the Obscured By Clouds is very underrated. I think all Pink Floyd is great, but your favorite song doesn't isn't going to be everyone elses favorite song.
someone that sees what i mean!!! yay! :)

the mighty zep 10-19-2004 04:59 PM
Maybe it's real, but it sounds like a hoax to me. Like the whole DSOTM/Wizard of Oz synch thing... its only there because people want to believe its there. It really doesn't work that well at all.
People say it TOTALLY GOES IN SYNC with the movie because they see it on the websites, which are trying to getr people interested and excited. Ive done it a few days ago with some crappy video (didnt work well with commercials though...), but i still got the point. The only thing is the album lyrics and song structures are just very ironic to the movie. But youll find most the movie doesnt go very well with the album...but i think its interesting enough for everyone to check out. It doesnt work half as good after the first time the albums done.

Ive heard it also works with DSOTM, then Animals, then tracks 2-5 on Divison Bell. Maybe ill try that, but i doubt it will work.

The most ironic parts to me were these

1. The whole Great gig in the sky vocal solo while the house is in the tornado
2. 'Chinge' to money starts when the door opens to color
3. Breathe "Balenced on the biggest wave" - Dorothys on the pole
4. Dorothy listens for the tin mans heart when Eclipse ends and the heartbeat starts.
5. Time "kicking around a piece of ground in your hometown" Dorthy travels down the dirt road
6. The backround voices in The Great Gig saying 'im not afriad of dyeing, why shouldnt i' and all theo ther comments as the tornando approaches.
7. The great gig IN THE SKY/house is in the tornado in the sky
Any COLOUR you like/Dorothy cant decide which path to take on the YELLOW road
BRAIN DAMAGE while scarecrow sings about him not having a brain.

there were some other cool parts, but those were the really cool ones, and if you didnt notice, theirs all the first time you play the CD. And yes, you should have the TV on mute when trying it...maybe captions would work, because some dialouge matches the lyrics. they suggest using the 50th anniversary DVD edition and starting the CD right after the thrid lion roar (on the MGM opening credits)

I mean, as in the ending notes for a song off of The Wall blend into the beginning notes of a song off of Wish You Were Here. However, I couldn't think of any that did do that, and I was asking if anyone else does.

the mighty zep 10-19-2004 07:14 PM

hmmm....ill check in on that.

If you find out what song in paticular tell me

the mighty zep 10-19-2004 07:24 PM

The Closest match i could find was the end to Young Lust and the beginning to the song Wish You Were Here. Nothing special though. I think that was a false statement.

Riva 10-19-2004 07:28 PM

Bugger, and I was hoping it was true. Ah well, it would have been a cool little trick though. I'll go punch the guy who told me that. Thanks mighty zep.
I don't think Animals is really equivalent to Animal Farm. It's more addressed to British society at the time. Dogs is about the rich and powerful, pigs is about the government, Sheep is about the common people...
Most of the lyrics in the songs match up with the Animal Farm idea, and numerous reviews have said it is about based somewhat on Animal Farm. I think it is more of a fact than an opinion.
Most of the lyrics in the songs match up with the Animal Farm idea, and numerous reviews have said it is about based somewhat on Animal Farm. I think it is more of a fact than an opinion.
Has Roger ever said anything about the lyrics?

lunch998 10-20-2004 03:45 PM
Has Roger ever said anything about the lyrics?
Here is a Dave Gilmour Quote about the album:

"The Animal Farm concept didn't come up until the album was about three-quarters finished. I don't think Roger had it in his mind before, but at some point he realized how close the lyrics were on those tracks, and he changed the lyrics about a bit on 'Dogs'...and 'Sheep'... It all obviously fitted together in his mind, coming to mean that. It is a good thing, in the end, having come to a collective decision, though. It knocks out some of the excesses which might otherwise appear from us as individuals."

Aside from that hard evidence, every review I've read of Animals (Probably about 10-15 of them) explain that the Album is somewhat based on Animal Farm.

Riva 10-20-2004 11:19 PM

Well, it it mighty close for it to be a coincidence.

Riva 10-21-2004 05:54 PM

Now, I know Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is a chapter from Wind In The Willows, but is there any significance beyond that?

Permanent Solution 10-21-2004 06:00 PM

I can give you a solid, definite mebbe on that.

Jude 10-21-2004 06:52 PM
IMO their most haunting lyrics are from hey you, the version of comfortably numb from pulse is the best, but the one performed with NIN, David Bowie etc. is also v. good
Uh....I think I can say with confidence that Pink Floyd has never performed, nor will ever perform with, Bowie, much less NIN. I can only imagine that you've downloaded one of those mislabeled files off Kazaa where it has the names of five random unrelated artists, none of whom would ever share a stage with each other, on it and it's up to you who it actually is.

doctorjbeam 10-21-2004 07:43 PM

Getting back on topic, I'd have to say that my all time fave Floyd songs are Comfortably Numb, Time and SOYCD. Lyrically, they're awesome. Musically, especially the solo from Time, is just amazing.

I just love the lyrics from Comfortably Numb:

Hello, is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home?
Come on, now,
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

Amazing stuff.

i love ppink floyd my parents love pink floyd, they love pink floyd enough to name me after them, hi im barrett. my favorite song is......... i like em all the same the ooone with the best lyrics is definitly dogs
You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older
And in the end you'll pack up, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer.
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest that you've sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down, alone
Dragged down by the stone.
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everythings done under the sun
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.
genius....
