get the parker with springs album.

pianoplyr77 07-23-2005 05:30 PM

I'm guessing you meant Parker with Strings, right?

Sorry for being picky, but I was looking for something of him in a small combo. Any other ideas?

there are so many of those...many of which are compilations and stuff. he did a jam session album with benny carter, jimmy hodges, ben webster and some others called "charlie parker jam session". you could also get the soundtrack from the movie "bird" - that's got a lot of songs on it. "bird at the high-hat" is another good one...parker with strings is still worth getting, though :)

Thanks

my favorite is sonny rollins, he's under rated, better than coltrane in my opinion, his album saxophone collasus is excellent

New Orleans funk...

GALACTIC
Possibly the best funk act on tour today. Power house grooves led by drummer Stanton Moore who was quoted by Trey Anastasio as being "the best drummer on the planet".
Best CD out for sale would have to be the bonnaroo set from June, 05. 4 hours of some of the funkiest music i ever had the pleasure to witness, so i had to purchase it from livebonnaroo.com...Galactic invited all of their hero's out for an allstar lineup of guests included Leo N.(meters), Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Sister Teedy, Marc Mudro, to name a few....a must buy for your funk collection.
http://www.galacticfunk.com

ELLIOTT COHN and the COSMIC SWEAT SOCIETY
Indie act based out of New Orleans that have started touring the nation bringing a unique blend of funk-n-roll. A typical NOLA gig features sax man Jeff Watkins(James Brown) and drummer Mean Willie Green(Neville's).
Catchy funk tunes that stick in your brain for awhile, their live show is high energy and full of improvisational moments, no noodlin just plain funky jammin, the keyboard player is incredible.
http://www.cosmicsweatsociety.com

BIG SAMS FUNKY NATION
Voted the best funk act in NOLA 2004. Formerly from the Dirty Dozen, frontman Big Sammie Williams formed a collaboration of players that have been blowing away clubs over the past several years. Playing his trombone and dancing like James Brown, Big Sam could easily be mistaken for a linebacker...it's pretty amazing to watch this big man move on stage....pure energy and some of the best funk being played today...

i just remembered the album
BRECKER BROTHERS HEAVY METAL JAZZ
no. it's not a heavy metal album, just people playing their hearts out,
but do yourself a favor, skip track one- east river- you'll know why after you ignore this and listen to it anyway

the beach 08-19-2005 04:51 PM

I know like four people have mentioned him already but JOHN SCOFIELD is just great. UBERJAM is so much fun to listen too. BELA FLECK AND THE FLECKTONES are good too, they're kind world/jazz but its wooten so it works. LIVE ART by them made me laugh i enjoyed listening to it so much. PAT METHENY with Dave Holland and Roy Haynes made an album that my girlfriend just gave me called QUESTION AND ANSWER. I'm listening to it now and its just sweet jazz guitar, he's really good.

he was a dirty guy. jelly roll is the sliding/rolling motion you get when you put a condom on.

TemperamentalGoat 09-05-2005 01:10 AM

Hey, could anyone recommend me songs that feature mostly guitar and a saxophone? Weird mix but myself and a good friend want to try something out, and we'd like a bit of direction :)

Thanks

I know I'll probably be murdered for mentioning his name here, but Jimi Hendrix did some good jazzy stuff and funkier stuff towards the end of his career.
Third Stone from the Sun,
Rainy Day, Dream Away,
Still Raining, Still Dreaming
And his work with Buddy Miles on the Band of Gypses is pretty funky i guess.

Oh and a good jazzy blues song is Mean Old World by T Bone Walker...not straight jazz, but anyone who likes jazz guitar will apreciate this song.

ambiguouslyjay 09-10-2005 12:30 PM

man, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Soulive yet. They are by far my favorite Jazz/Funk band. I would recommend their Cd- Turn it Out, it features John Scofield and Oteil Burbridge on a few tracks

Joe Henderson
Post-Bop / Hard-Bop / Fusion

Songs:

Inner Urge

Our Thing
Page One

These are four of the six albums I have of Joe, and they're absolutely incredible. Multiple is mostly Fusion, but the others are mostly hard-bop. He's one of the most incredible musicians I've ever heard, and his rhythm sections are exceptionally great. He plays with Kenny Dorham, McCoy Tyrner, and Elvin Jones on some of his albums. Truly exceptional.

Random recommendation: Check out Keith Jarrett's inside out. Awesome improv jazz trio.

Could someone recommend me some acid jazz?

Ulysses 10-10-2005 07:36 AM

The Brand New Heavies are a decent Acid-Jazz group.

camelfarmer 10-17-2005 01:40 AM

Someone tell me (or link me to posts with) smooth jazz reccomendations. I read through the first few 3-4 pages but didnt find anything. Thanks.

camelfarmer 10-18-2005 10:11 AM

Oh be like that, and what the hell is bop?

funkybass415 10-19-2005 05:25 PM

tomtom 10-21-2005 06:50 PM

would anybody consider The Cat Empire Jazz or Funk, cause whatever they are, they're very unique, and i LOVE them

magicbus 10-25-2005 12:28 AM

Can somebody recommend me something like Passion, Grace, and Fire, except slower? Like some relaxing jazzy acoustic music, spanish flavor or not, doesn't matter. Thanks.

Okonkwo 10-25-2005 05:41 PM

Not that this has anything to do with any of the above posts, but for future reference, the best orchestrated jazz album of all time is The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady, by Charles Mingus. Definitely the most brilliant album I've ever heard.

Zappa 10-25-2005 06:11 PM

That is a great album, but asserting that it is "the best orchestrated jazz album of all time" seems a little ridiculous to me.

Tele_Dude 10-29-2005 02:26 PM

Are there any sites with Funk-chords tabbed? I suck at notes, and I dont have a teacher:upset:

Try maybe Acoustic Alchemy.. I don't really know. Maybe Wes Montgomery?

(...is PGF a Mahavishnu album or is it that DiMeola/DeLucia/McLaughlin one?)

Alright...here's what I'm looking for- something jazzy and funky, but taking influence (or influencing) modern jungle electronica. That is: Fast funk/break beats with slower 1/2 speed ambient melodies and/or grooves.

halfdeadhippo 10-29-2005 02:53 PM
(...is PGF a Mahavishnu album or is it that DiMeola/DeLucia/McLaughlin one?)
It is a guitar trio album, sir. :thumb:

hoping someone here can suggest a group that has good upright bass in it, or just sounds somewhat like medeski, martin, & wood or the bad plus.

rokaholic 11-02-2005 06:48 PM

here's what i'm looking for; something like John Scofield, Medeski Martin and Wood, Soulive, and Joshua Redman's 'Momentum' CD. i really like that type of jazz

thanks
