Oh snap. I forgot to get into Fates Warning. So which album should I pick up as a first?

ExitWound 07-02-2004 12:35 AM
Is there a band that Kai hasn't appeared in at one time or another?!
Hehe. It's so true!! He is the Iron Savior.

Heavenly is okay, but slightly too soft. While the music is hard, the overall sound is extremely soft compared to gamma ray and galloglass and montany. There's a certain sound I enjoy, and Heavenly misses it only slightly. They fall where Freedom Call falls for me, just outside my realm of enjoying it fully. I cannot find exactly what I dislike, but something bugs me.

Kai is king. He invented music and keeps reinventing it with each release or guest appearance he does. He's in the studio fooling around with new Gamma Ray material. Can't wait!!

Hitroshimite 07-02-2004 05:16 PM

Today I picked up Stratovarious's Elements pt. 1.

I think I have a new favorite band.

RideTheSpiral 07-02-2004 10:30 PM

That was my first Strat album. I don't mind it but I'm not their biggest fan.

Skeksis 07-02-2004 10:35 PM

Stratovarius = Awesome

My favorite album is "Visions".

Hitroshimite 07-02-2004 11:06 PM

Sadly, no stores around where I live carry Visions. Which is too bad, because I've heard a couple songs from that album and they kick ***.

The one thing that kinda bugs me about Stratovarius is their singer. He has a really strong accent, which comes through alot in his singing. I suppose I'll get used to it though.

RideTheSpiral 07-04-2004 12:20 PM

I like how Timo sings with his accent. It adds something to the song.

Hitroshimite 07-10-2004 01:32 PM

Page 20 this thread was on. 20!!! That’s disgusting.

Anyways, has anyone hear heard of a band called Magic Kingdom? I picked up their latest CD ‘Metallic Tragedy’ and it’s awesome. Symphonic Power/Speed Metal at it’s best. The title track is amazing. It’s a 13 minute mini-opera (literally; it has a plot, characters, dialogue, etc) with each character represented by a different kind of metal singer. There’s the Nightwish-esq female soprano, the death metal growler, the black metal shrieker, the bands normal vocalist and I think there’s another guy in there too. The voices all work together to form an incredible atmosphere. The whole kicks more *** than words can describe.

peruviantrooper 07-10-2004 03:29 PM

****!!!... Everyone when they talk about power metal no one mentions Helloween.. theyre like the ebst power metal band ever.. and the most influential 2!!.. But people dont apreciate them at all anymore!!!!

Hitroshimite 07-10-2004 06:25 PM

Yes, Helloween are an amazing band, and the fore fathers of power metal.

Adam 07-10-2004 10:32 PM

I think Helloween get recognised a lot.

Bartender 07-12-2004 05:51 PM
I like how Timo sings with his accent. It adds something to the song.
I rather like Tony Kakko's (Sonata Arctica) singing with his accent as well. Especially on the slightly slower songs.

I was wondering, why are there so few reviews of power metal albums in the Cd Reviews forum? I was thinking of doing a Sonata Arctica review, unless someone more qualified wants to. Anyone else?

nice description of the band! im going to look them up on cdnow.com and if the price is right i will order one :)

RideTheSpiral 07-13-2004 03:15 AM

Sounds a bit like Avantasia...

FrailandBedazzled1979 07-13-2004 03:17 AM

really pricey online, i will add it to the list.

Avantasia uses differnet vocalsits but they dont range in black or death metal lol. I think Tobias put alot more effort with Avantasia than he does with Edguy...well, the hellfire club was the best Edguy album to date IMO which just came out hehe, he said he isnt sure if hed ever do a Metal Opera part 3 :(

RideTheSpiral 07-13-2004 03:37 AM

I like Mandrake (Tears of a Mandrake!?) best.

I only recently got The Metal Opera Part 1 and I was pretty disapointed actually. I only listened to it a couple of times and forgot about it. I might listen to it now.

I'll post again in an hour or so. :p

Avantasia are actually quite good. And yes, gathering 10 + guest vocalists per album would be quite difficult, i think, but it does make the band. Pretty much the cream of the crop as far as power metal goes, Kai Hansen, David Defies, awesome :D... I'm going to put it on after i finish with some Iron Savior

NP: Iron Savior - Condition Red.

haha, i said they are good!! you might have messed up the translation lol, i said Tobias put more effort into Avantasia than Edguy IMO...i got into Edguy because of Avantasia and all of hte Edguy albums cant compare to those two :) The metal opera pt.2 is one of my favourite power metal cds!!

thats a cool one, id but "hellfire club" and "the vain glory opera" in front of "mandrake" though, but its better than "theatre of salvation" which is more wattered down.

RideTheSpiral 07-14-2004 02:15 AM

I got into Edguy from Avantasia too.

I'm listening to the song Around by Kotipelto and it owns anything he ever did in Strat. :D

Skeksis 07-14-2004 02:27 AM

We gotta keep this thread alive people (I love it, I discover new bands), we're a minority here.

<

RideTheSpiral 07-14-2004 02:58 AM

I've run out of bands to talk about. :upset:

Skeksis 07-14-2004 12:52 PM

Let's discuss singers, after all, singing is one of the defining characteristics of Power Metal. My favorite would be Fabio Leone from Rhapsody, his control of the vibrato is amazing, very operatic; I also like Kotipelto's voice and he has an amazing range.

FrailandBedazzled1979 07-14-2004 01:22 PM

Kotipelto i find to be the most intresting and enjoyable singer in power metal, personal preferance i know, but his style and way of holding a note really hits home to me. Fabio i love to death, Luca'a vocalist on his solo albums can not compare to Fabio's voice, very inspiring when he sings with such confidence.

Heres a few more to mention: Chris Bay (freedom call) Mathius Blad (falconer) and Daniel Heiman (lost horizon).

PS: lets weigh the pros and cons with Helloween's vocalists: Michael Kiske and Andreas Deris.

Skeksis 07-14-2004 02:27 PM

Sadly, I don't know too much about Helloween. Can you recommend some songs by them (with both vocalists) so we can discuss? :)

RideTheSpiral 07-15-2004 01:42 AM

I like Kiske best out of the two.

Russel Allen is my favourite vocalist though.
