Some more photos showing the headstock in greater detail.

Overview of the headstock.

Close up of the headstock face, if you look carefully you can see marks left by the face cutting of the radial arm saw.

A close up of the trussrod area and where the brass nut will go. To give an idea of how large a brass nut I am sticking on this, where the fingerboard ends to where you can see the indent about halfway along the trussrod adjusting section is where the nut will strech.

An angled shot to better show the seated truss rod.
You're almost as slower builder than JP. :p

Looks good, besides the slow progress.
Thanks.

I do work a full time day job and can only work on the project on Saturdays, so I don't think I do too badly. Would love to be able to spend more time on it.

Good thing in a way, means I am forced to think about it, although the bugger up might disprove that :p

HELLonWHEELS 04-15-2007 01:00 PM

looks amazing Shawn.

blizzard 04-22-2007 01:20 AM

I'd tap that :thumb:

leweh 04-22-2007 03:42 AM

thats gonna look brilliant when its finished

ebe9 04-28-2007 09:42 AM

I promise I have been working on this, just have not been posting photos.

So to prove that I have indeed been doing something other than my 9-5er, where are some pixorlories for your viewing pleasure.

I am pretty pleased with how this is shaping up.

Looking good

What kind of strings are going to go on this baby?

good choice. High tension flatwounds are a good idea.

Spazzout22 04-28-2007 10:45 AM

So I can't really be sure from the pictures, but the neck looks pretty thick. Are you going for an upright style neck? Cuz I dig that. Also, it's comin along pretty fine! It's always an exciting stage when something goes from a square to the final shape. Keep up the good work!

It is pretty thick, I wanted something similar to an upright, but with more of a Warwick type feel, plus I find when playing upright I don't really have an issue with thicker necks.

Plus I love the Warwick neck, thicker is more my taste.

Ya, no, me too. I really dig the thicker neck, it provides less of a difference on my hands when I switch from Upright to electric. I made my neck SUPER thick. Actually, so much so that it wouldn't fit inside the hard case I had, so I had to get a new one. But it's looking really cool. I can't wait to see it with finish on it! Have you wiped like terpintine on it to get a brief impression of what it'll look like with finish?

Have not actually done the whole turps thing, used a bit od spit :p

But the colours are hopefully going to go really dark for the wenge, a yellowy gold for the afromosia fingerboard and the bubinga should go a nice rich dark red.

ebe9 05-05-2007 10:41 AM

Well more pictures and progress time.

It was the turn of the wings ofthe bass this weekend, have been leaving them alone for too long.

I also did some work on a Fender Jazz Bass Neck, in that I have made a new brass nut for it. I will be dropping it off on Monday for the guy to collect from the store. Going to be getting paid in strings for it, so that should be fun.

So onto the pictures.

Here are just a couple photos of the brass nut I made for the Jazz Bass neck.

Overview shot.

Angled shot. The neck had some packaging tape on it, so there is residue of that left which I shall be cleaning off.

that jazz needs a serious fret job :p
that jazz needs a serious fret job :p
That it does, its from 1980 something and has been rather abused.

Its actually being sent away for the fretjob, I would love to try doing it, but not on somebody else's bass.

maniac0796 05-06-2007 02:52 PM

The EUB looks good Ebe.

Take a photo of it with the neck in the middle of the wings.

blizzard 05-06-2007 06:41 PM

Like I said before, that is coming together very nicely.

the_pure_drummer 05-26-2007 05:11 PM

Yeh man keep up the good work!

Brandon_S 05-26-2007 06:10 PM

I dont like the body really, tbqh. But very good job so far.

Jimbobntnr 06-04-2007 11:50 AM

I think the body turned out nice. Good work.

ebe9 06-09-2007 08:16 AM

Well it has been a while since I posted anything with regards to this, mainly because I have not really done any significant work on it. I did drill the holes into the headstock for the tuning machines a week or so back.

Real main news for this installment is the fact that the wings are now glued to the body, so it actually looks like a bass now and not a bat with separate bits.

And onto the pictures.

And some more pictures.

The wings connected with the slots. The slot pieces of wenge were cut down further, but this demonstrates the joining idea, it also helps to unsure that the tops of the wings line up wit the top of the body.

BassVirtuoso 06-09-2007 08:53 AM

Ahh I can't wait to see some jewelry on that!

Akira 06-09-2007 08:55 AM

Looks interesting. I still don't quite "get" the design, but I'll wait to see it all decked out and in playing position to pass judgment. The build quality looks ace.

blizzard 06-09-2007 09:03 AM

Very nice Shaun! If you EUBs aren't your thing just turn it on its side a play it as normal fretless.

Polyamarous 06-09-2007 11:02 AM

It's huge and heavy though!
