In metal, I really like Mastodon, excellent band.
I can appreciate Metal for skill, but they don't do anything for me in terms of enjoyment. The way a lot of them play guitar is robotic and clinical and, to me, boring.
Exactly. And in metal guitar is overrated. A large percentage of people who listens to metal only cares about the guitar. And from people I know personally that percentage increases to a 100%

Bicuspid 10-22-2005 03:01 PM

I'm a Metal fan more than anything. I love Punk, Jazz, Classical, and Rock (to name a few genres), but Metal is my bread and butter; what I was raised on. Like most every genre of music, you have a lot of crap, a decent amount of decent-good bands, and a few gems. It's just a matter of sifting through the crap to find what you like, eventually you get linked to a bunch of bands you like from that.

As far as the robotic and clinical statement goes; that, to me, would be like saying most Punk bands care more about being simplistic and derivative than writing good songs.

RetiredAt21 10-22-2005 03:15 PM

I was raised on metal, but I don't listen to much proper metal anymore.

non sequitor 10-22-2005 03:32 PM

i like metal when the drums are somewhat fast. i cant stand that pounding boring drumbeat a lot of shi'tty bands constantly use (disturbed, creed, etc)

Bands like them, SOD and DRI should be liked by everyone.

Independent_CA 10-22-2005 03:52 PM

Rock in general, no, it's just not my style. Metal I tend to find boring and annoying after a while.

Municipal Waste \m/

also, I listened to Napalm Death's Scum today, and was completely blown away. There are huge metal influences in that album.

Rockafella 10-22-2005 07:46 PM

Rock and metal don't suck, they're not my thing.

One of my favorite bands, Hazardous Mutation is still album of the year for me. Best live band too.

The last couple things they've done is just metal. I don't really like it either.

StruckEverywhere 10-22-2005 11:24 PM

I can't stand metal, makes me cringe.

LeftoverVictim719 10-23-2005 02:34 AM

I dont like metal that much, it kind of annoys me. Besides a little Black Sabbath here or there. As for rock, I'll like lots of bands and songs new and old and I also am trying to get into a little Blues

time bomb 10-23-2005 03:47 AM

my favourite band's rage against the machine, so i guess i dont have anything against rock, i listen to some slipknot as well. Other r and m bands seem to get boring to me if i listen to them for a fair while, but i can definately say the same about hardcore, i really dont like it. I guess it just depends on musical tastes and if you have preconcieved prejudices regarding those genres.

Zion Gates 10-23-2005 02:13 PM

i love rock and metal...listening to tool at the moment

Skidmark Steve 10-23-2005 06:57 PM

whats the crowd like at metal shows? i imagine they suck

smokersdieyounger 10-25-2005 07:47 AM

I like the crowds and atmospheres at metal shows. I am a photographer and I have photographed The haunted and some Victory label bands at my local venue. I think the only real difference between a punk and metal show is how people dress. Everyone still dances violently (but theres no ska bits in metal) and everyone chats and stuff to strangers. I love thrash and death metal soo much. Of course Napalm Death sound metal influenced, Bill Steer who took over guitar after Justin Broadwick was in Carcass (one of my favourite bands).

superpeer 10-25-2005 07:50 AM

I love both. I prefer metal though, obviously, otherwise I would be a punk mod. :p
I like the crowds and atmospheres at metal shows. . . .
I go to my fair share of metal shows, and not once have I ever said, "Man, the crowd was awesome tonight". Metal is one of those unfortunate genres, like mainstream punk, that is deluded and inevitably ruined by its fans.

Suicidal Tendancies should end this debate.

Having always loved music as a whole, I can't say I ever understood why you are what you listen to.

It's stupid, and closes your mind to the wonder that is modern music.

Metal and punk are so closely related in origin that most people forget that. I mean, punk is just rock and roll. Made from the heart pure and free. Some of it anyway. Now a lot of both is crap, and regurgitated from years of bad music. But thats ok.

I love all music. I would never limit myself to a specific genre simply because of stupidity. I remember being this way though. Especially with hardcore. West coast punk was made fun of, as were anything outside of east coast hardcore. I never understood that. I even loved some rap. I still do. It's good stuff. Old school hip hop and punk had a lot in common. Meh.. I always loved classic rock, jazz, fusion, metal, death metal, black metal.. I mean.. It's all good. To limit yourself to just one, especially one like punk, whose ideals and standards are more mythical than religion, you're really just closing your mind.

It's sad. It's one thing to really not like it, but to do it purposely to "keep it real" is the more ignorant thing I've ever heard.
most of those are metalcore arent they? i dunno about NOFX i hear them mentioned all over the place i thought they where punk.
I never got why people thought you were so stupid. I do now though. Almost none of the bands I mentioned were metalcore, except Converge and Bridge to Solace, and I really doubt you know of them. You totally missed the point of my post, and you looked really stupid doing it.

RCVA 10-25-2005 01:27 PM

When it is original and done well it's good.

Amen to that, I listen to pretty much every genre.

Drum Phil 10-27-2005 08:13 AM

I can appreciate most forms of music. The only forms i cannot are the manufactured forms of pop, punk, hip-hop and electonica. All the underground or lesser known forms of those genre's i can appreciate.

There are times when punk just isnt whats needed so i dabble in electronica and metal as well occasionally

nitzguy 10-27-2005 10:46 AM

most punk i like, some metal i like.... i listen to punk for the message and lyrics and metal for muscianship... i won't not listen to something, i remeber when my dad played jazz i hated it, but that was because was a young and stupid, now i'm old and less stupid

k1ckthecat 10-27-2005 10:55 AM

I don't mind Primus, Chevelle, Deftones, QOTSA, Foo Fighters or Alien Ant Farm. Those are the only rock bands I can stand. Metal bands annoy me but I respect them.
