Really good Jewish reggae artist (with some hip-hop and beatboxing influences) that someone made a thread about in the pit.

Oh man Matisyahu is great. If you havent listened to him i highly reccomend it. And if you like it try to find 'Live at Stubbs'.

I'm finally going to a decent record store tonight when I'm in a big city for a show. I got a bunch of money saved up so I can hopefully pick up CD's from 4 genres. As far as reggae or dub is concerned, I'm picking up a Scientist album or two if they got 'em.

Zion Gates 09-24-2005 07:49 PM

so i was listening to some prince jazzbo, and my favourite lyric popped up:

still iam down here in babylon,
fighting my way to go to zion

i came to the conclusion that reggae had some of the best and most spiritual lyrics. Discuss your favourite reggae lyrics...sorry for the really bad conversation starter, but this thread is going slow

sweboy 09-25-2005 03:33 AM

Yeah, even though that one may not really be the most original reggae lyric... I don't like it too much when it goes too sterotypical and is nothing but "Praise Jah, spread the love, destroy Babylon, smoke the herb, bring our children back to Zion, aye-yo-yo". There's nothing wrong with those kind of lyrics, it's just that a lot of them rasta singers tend to get caught up in that stereotype and sing about nothing else.
But yeah, there's some good lyrics out there for sure.

yeah thats true...either way i still love rasta lyrics, i find them to be real spiritual, and thats what i really like about the music.

So much trouble in the world - Bob Marley

'Bless my eyes this morning;
Jah sun is on the rise once again.
The way earthly thin's are goin',
Anything can happen.

You see men sailing on their ego trip,
Blast off on their spaceship,
Million miles from reality:
No care for you, no care for me.'

I love Bob Marleys words especialy because he really speaks in universal terms, he speaks for all people and all things and shows that we are all going through the same struggle. But reggaes spritual, positive vibe is what ive come to love most about it, I like to feel good, uplifted.

Not necessarily their reggae tunes, but Bad Brains as a whole definitely has some awesome lyrics. Their lyrics and reading about their lifestyle really influenced me as a person. There are only three bands I can safely say changed my life, and one of those bands is Bad Brains.

what should i get next? anyones with a bunch of reggae tunes?

El_Shiznit 09-25-2005 08:50 PM

Wowzers! You don't have their S/T? That album is considered their best and I have heard multiple sources refer to it as "the holy grail of hardcore".

It's got some of the best versions of their hardcore stuff. Also has some reggae and dub. 3 tracks if I remember correctly. "Leaving Babylon" has an awesome bass line. Get that S/T asap if you can.

When you say you have "i and i survive", do you mean the vinyl EP, 12" Single, or the full-length dub album I & I Survived? I think the song on the 12" Single is the version on the greatest riffs CD. Basically what I'm trying to say is if you don't have it, get the dub album.

the full length dub album is the i and i survive i have. I never bought the self titled cause i already had most of the songs on other c-ds. Hows rise i hear thats really good

El_Shiznit 09-26-2005 02:13 PM

eh...

I do not own Rise or God of Love as I heard they are bad. And on Rise, HR and Earl Hudson aren't in the lineup. So I never bothered to check those records out either. Though I probably will sometime soon.

If you want another one for cheap, get the Omega Sessions. Should only be about 5 bucks as it is more or less an EP. But it has got some good versions of songs and probably a song you haven't heard before, "Stay Close To Me".

sweboy 09-26-2005 02:30 PM

Stay Close to Me is fucking awesome.

magicbus 09-26-2005 03:11 PM

Does anybody have any other Scientist albums besides "Rids the World..." and "Roots In Dub Tradition"? I want to get "Meet The Space Invaders" but I can't find it.

Im not positive but I dont think so. I havent been able to save any songs onto my comp so I dont think you would be able to.

El_Shiznit 09-29-2005 12:43 AM

To save them on your computer, just right click and hit "save target as". However, it is a weird file type which iTunes won't directly open up. You can open it in WMP obviously though. There is probably a file conversion program out there that will do it. May cost money though.

Reggae player - Needs opinions on Keyboards

Hey all. I bet this question is very common on the forum, but I need some opinions on the keyboards out there and what may be best suited for my style of play. I'm trying to get as much information as I can before committing to a purchase.

I'm in a reggae band, and I've been playing for about two years (still mediocre but progressing). We're just getting to the point where we will start gigging in a couple of months. I am looking for a keyboard / organ that fills the following needs:

- a $400 - $800 price tag;
- produces both sharp "bang" chord sounds on keyboard tones, and full "bubble" organ sounds;
- good recording quality would help as well.

I would really appreciate any reggae keyboarders' opinions on this.

I know very little about keyboard brands or styles. Most of my searching has led to Korg or Roland. Anyone out there with an opinion on Korg keyboards vs. Roland keyboards would be a big help as well.

Thanks everyone! :thumb:

( For those unfamiliar, some reggae key sounds, specifically organ sounds, can be difficult to reproduce on many standard keyboards. The "bubble" sound, for example, is a background organ sound that usually hits on the half beats and produces a sort of pumping warble. If you listen to reggae, then you may know what I am talking about. Sometimes you have to look for it, but it is an essential part of the reggae sound. )

^ no clue, but post your bands music man

El_Shiznit 10-05-2005 10:57 AM

Yeah, I'd like to hear it.

Today I purchased a Jimmy Cliff album for $7 and a Toots & The Maytals for $3. It's weird because I never see albums I want for so cheap.
