Sing the Sorrow is a great album. Its the first one I got, and its the one that got me into AFI. With everyone saying old stuff rules new stuff, well I think thats bullshit. In my musical tastes, old stuff is just as good as the new stuff.

Well, your opinion is wrong.
I assume it's because you said AFI have more talent than any punk band, implying that punk bands are generally technically inproficient.
that's crap. most bands in general are technically inproficient. the fact that alot of sucessful punk bands might seem to be this way is a BS generalization, at best.

Aeaon 06-21-2005 10:35 AM
I love afi. they are one of the most talented bands ive heard and continue to show major talent unlike most hardcore punk today or any punk for that reason. Jade is amazing and daveys vocal inspiration is David Bowie so you know theyre good.
Man you are so retarded.

And AFI is a horrible band. Period.

Let's Chop Cats! 06-21-2005 10:39 AM

I see nothing wrong with what he said.

antiflagsetsfire 06-21-2005 11:23 AM
What does everybody think of AFI? personally i think they're best thing thats happened to punk (if you would call them punk now) Davey's vocals mixed with the bands riffs and beats is just musical bliss.. what do you guys think?
Their old stuff was amazing. Sing the Sorrow was a disapoitment. Silver and Cold could never compare to The Boy Who Destroyed the World, or I Wann Get A Mohawk.

ThePassionOfTheKasey 06-21-2005 12:21 PM
New stuff > old stuff
I agree with the greek

RetiredAt21 06-21-2005 12:45 PM

The new stuff blows the old stuff out of the water. Not that I don't like the old stuff or anything, the new stuff is just better in every aspect.

if you're going to flame someone or bash a band, do a good job of it at least. i mean, jesus christ, put some thought into it or something. all you're doing is spamming it up with worthless comments that contribute nothing and are (in theory) ban-worthy.

RetiredAt21 06-21-2005 12:49 PM

I think people who post like that should be banned. They contribute nothing to these forums.

one dark flame 06-21-2005 01:18 PM

i love afi there one of my fav bands. i reallly like black sails and sing the sorrow alot.

Tjebby 06-21-2005 01:26 PM

Old stuff is just as good as new stuff. They are both ace. Sing The Sorrow is one of the best albums I have heard, yet so is Shut Your Mouth...

cheeser_1 06-21-2005 05:17 PM
I love when people come to a forum they haven't contributed to before, just to make a juvenile jibe at a band.
OMG AFI SUX PERIOD LOL I RUEL.

Tjebby 06-21-2005 05:34 PM

Liek OMgz NO! AFI is SOo HxC.

grandjoke 06-21-2005 09:36 PM

personally, i like all of their stuff. i don't know if i could say which is better, their old or new stuff because it's so different. it's like choosing between apples and oranges not like choosing between different kinds of apples. i hope that analogy made sense. Although i don't feel like i identify with the lyrics as much as i used to, it's still amazing music and i look forward to the new album

maco 06-22-2005 03:40 PM
Their newer stuff (Black Sails and on/When jade joined) has just been hardcore with a more melodic and experimental. There older stuff was too generic (not saying I don't like it) for my tastes. Also I'm big on bands experimenting/being not generic.
Yeah, the old stuff was really just the same kind of punk that every other punk band was doing. Now they're their own little thing. There really aren't any bands out there that sound the same. It's nice. I suppose the reason they and Streetlight Manifesto are my 2 favourite bands is because both are really quite different from other bands of their genre and don't have a tonne of bands that sound like them floating around.

maco 06-22-2005 03:43 PM
Just getting into them. I bought Sing the Sorrow today, and i think its pretty mad. I dont usually listen to punk, or hardcore (whatever they are) but I think this great.
Email me (dollzrgr8@yahoo.com). I'll send ya rare tracks. That goes for anyone else out there. I have every rare AFI song with the exception of Man in a Suitcase and Love is a Many Splendored Thing (someone said they'd send me them) and 2 of the Sing the Sorrow demos (Bleed Black and Paper Airplanes). Anything else you want, just ask and I'll send it.
AFI's great, one of my favorite bands. I can't say that I like the way their music is going right now, though. I own all of their full-length albums, and I think Black Sails in the Sunset and Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes are their best releases. Sing the Sorrow was good, but its a really moody album and I can only enjoy it when I'm in the right mood.

I haven't heard much other than they are definetely in the studio recording it right now. Some are saying that they went in months ago, some are saying that they went in a few weeks ago. The album isn't expected until next year sometime.
They went in May 23. They say they're hoping as early as October, though we all know it could change (and probably will).

maco 06-22-2005 03:47 PM
Their newer stuff is going to keep going downhill, Davey said in an interview that their new album will be much more industrial sounding :( ....Very Proud of Ya and Black Sails are the shiznit though.
If you think of what Davey and Jade's favourite bands are though, it makes sense. I mean, both have Joy Division tattoos and Jade's got a Cure tattoo. Davey sang with Ronan during the song Beloved when VNV Nation was in the Bay Area. I mean, they're getting a lot of their industrial vibe out of their system by doing Blaqk Audio, but there's still gonna be more layering like in STS, and that's fine with me. I like industrial. It's fun (but so is techno....Daft Punk woo!)

skaterdan07 06-22-2005 03:58 PM
I assume it's because you said AFI have more talent than any punk band, implying that punk bands are generally technically inproficient.

Anyway, I'm another lover of the new stuff over the older. I like the gothic influence on Black Sail and particularly on Sing The Sorrow. I think Davey's songwriting has steadily improved to date, I'd regard songs like Death Of Seasons and Dancing Through Sunday as superior to most of their earlier material.
No No No i meant that they have extreme talent and are one of the best out there i never meant to say they were but if i did thats a mistake. i prefere old and new afi alike.

HAHAHAHA,

maco 06-22-2005 04:13 PM
death of seasons? is that the one you mean? unless you're talking about the cello (i think) outro, which still isn't techno, there's nothing in that song that seems even remotely out of place. and side projects aren't really the issue (although that's news to me, any more info?).
At 1:08 when he screams about malignant tribes and posthuman extinction excelling unrecognized, there's an industrial breakdown in the background. Being slow as I am, I thought the industrial breakdown was Davey's voice echoing during Susie's cello for a long time too. The industrial part blends in really well.

maco 06-22-2005 04:16 PM
what i meant was that theyre gonna be including more techno stuff into there music, not replacing the other instruments. And plus davey and jade have a side project called Blaq Auido, which is like a dark EMB style techno outfit. And Davey does DJing under the alias 'DJ Glitterboy'. I like AFI, but sometimes they just make me think "WTF?".
stop saying techno. It's industrial. Techno's happier. And it's spelled "Blaqk" with a "k" Jade also called Davey "DJ Hairstix" There is a difference between darkwave, EMB, techno, goth industrial, electronica, etc. though I'm bad at that genre area. I just know I can tell industrial from techno.

As far as electronic effects, there's also the intro to Miseria Cantare, the space between ...But Home is Nowhere and the Spoken Word then between that and This Time Imperfect then on the This Time Imperfect outro.

Cool, send some to yamaha2k3@hotmail.com if you can. I want anything you can set you hands on, you don't have to send me everything (as long as you can get me the Sing the Sorrow demos) Thanks :)

I love AFI, they're awesome. I love all of their stuff. I mainly like their older stuff, but I love Sing the Sorrow. It was an ace album IMO. I can't wait to hear more from there. Jade is an awesome guitarist too.

maco 06-22-2005 04:19 PM
That link sucks, do they have any songs up somewhere?
Nothing has been recorded for Blaqk Audio yet. They're putting it on hold until after AFI releases their 7th album. Jade says they've written a few songs for it though. That means expect BA in 2006.

Ugoff 06-22-2005 04:23 PM

I got a question, when you guys say techno (or industrual) do you mean that it will sound more like that techno part on Death of Seasons. I thought that part was awesome and I wanted to hear a little more of stuff like that from them.

I zipped them (like every song that's not on the most common version of each album) into a file that is 73 mb....I'll do a yousendit.com if I can get it to work

yep more industrial stuff being added and more "electronic layering" which I think means more of the stuff like the Miseria intro. It's supposed to have more of a "Cold Pop" feel which I think means "We used to sound like the Misfits. Now we'll sound like the Cure" so it'll be more like Cure-pop

nathan 06-22-2005 05:26 PM

i liked sing the sorrow some songs were lame but the instrumentals was more interesting than what they were before
