Hey Jean, just another quick useless question:
Is that Bach Invention No.13 (BWV784) playable on a 7-string, would you say? You got that song stuck in my head for MONTHS. :p EDIT: In retrospect, this was sort of a dumb question. Oh well. :p Can't wait to see more of your work! Those clips are awesome. |
currently, I'm writing for a solo album and nuclear rabbit is working with our new drummer to get him up to speed and also writing... so not much action from a public standpoint.
And happy to be an ispiration to ya.
oh man i seriously cant wait for your solo album, and if nuclear rabbit puts out a new cd.........................i think i just might die. :D :smoke: |
No worries, if you are playing regular bass stuff, you shouldn't need much more than 5 strings. The more the merrier for me. I've actually tried to bring my 5-string to a few shows and the kids in the audience started yelling at me because they wanted me to play the 9-string. I had to switch before the first song to avoid being pelted by converse shoes and spiked belts. :)
Would love to play in the UK - nothing in the works now but hopefully, sometime in the future.
Cheers for answering! I play much more that what I'd call regular bass stuff using my tenor 5, though there's no way you would have known that... I would post my site but then that could spark a barrage of everyone else doing the same which would be very unfair to you. Thanks again, Sheephead. PS: my site should be in my profile if you were THAT interested... |
You think you could swing around to the UP of Michigan and do a show?
|
You think you could swing around to the UP of Michigan and do a show?
And then swing through Indianapolis? C'mon Jean! |
^ What's awesome is that I could probably go to both.
Hell, do a Chicago one too Jean. ;) But none of this "18+" stuff. :upset: |
gotta come in East Canada ... preferably in New-Brunswick town of moncton
|
I could make a Chicago date if it's in the summer. C'mon Jean! The Midwest loves you! 18+ is bad. You'll be outcast from society. (Unless I get to be your roadie-for-a-day, then I get in AND I can hang with you :D )

Hi Jean. I have to admit that i haven't heard a lot of your stuff. But I have seen your video of you playing bach and that blew me away. Do you have any tips on what to practise regulary (such as scales, triads) that would improve my playing?
ps. I love the Pac-man bass. |
I bet he only uses one finger when picking!
*ahem* Anyways, I saw that Bach-video without sound, and I haven't found my jaw yet. Can't wait 'till I get home to watch it WITH sound! You mentioned Michael Manring as one of your greater inspirations, so my question is gonna be around him (TRIVIA: He actually was the 'ask the pro' just before you). How has Michael inspired you? Has he been crucial for your (tapping) technique, or is it 'just' the soul he puts in his music? If you had a question for him, what would it be? (And another small one: Do you know NHØP (Niels-Henning Ørsted Petersen)?) You rock |

(And another small one: Do you know NHØP (Niels-Henning Ørsted Petersen)?)
RIP.. NHØP so deserves to be FA at some point. Especially now that he's no longer among us. Luckily I got to see him before it was too late. ____ So, Jean, you have some pretty interesting lines and riffs going on most of the time in your music. What's your creative work-flow? I mean, do you work from a scale or just messing about by ear. And how do you incorporate your work with the rest of the band. Do you figure out a song sitting and talking about it or do you jam until it just sounds right? Also, Nuclear Rabbit seems to be influenced by tons of things. It sorta reminds me of the Dillinger Escape Plan. But what are your personal favorite bands. Oh, and have you ever thought about experimenting with the fretless bass guitar? Anyhow, it's always a big inspiration seeing players as talented as you get their groove on, so rock on and thanks for coming. |
RIP..

Hi, I think it's great you've taken time to visit our forum :thumb:
You or your band ever make it down to the east bay or south bay (I see you're in novato)? Ever run into Metallica up there? :p Ever go to Sears Point to watch the racing? I wish I lived a little closer to that track Have you always been a professional musician? What sort of jobs did you do before doing music full time? I'm assuming you're a full time musician here ;) |
hey you have to come out to kalamazoo sometime. and now that you know about us here at mx. willing you be staying here and posting with us, and just beign a regualr person.... well except the fact you will be the best musician on the forums.
|
also do u have is there a reason for putting emgs in you alemic. instead of just having alembic pickups. and since you dont have the normal pickups in there. do u have a different pre amp.
|
Hey Jean;
As a clearly talented bassist, you're ability is no limit to what you can play. Do you ever get the urge to play hideously over complicated bass parts that would detract from the song as a whole? I'm still very much limited by my ability, but I still find myself wanting to play solos all over the place... :upset: Fallen Angel |
ok, there's a lot of questions now. Maybe we should wait untill he has answered some?

You're definitely a cool guy, Jean. Here's a very important question:
What is your favorite SNES game? Just curious, of course. :) |

You may have to transpose some parts or come up with some tricked out fingererings. |
Welcome back Jean! :)
Quick question...what do you think the best type of wood for a body is, and why? |
You think you could swing around to the UP of Michigan and do a show?
In regards to all show requests: Man, we'd love to play them all. We were almost on the side stage for this year's Vans Warped tour, but we weren't quite ready for it (but we had just got the drummer so we weren't sure)... we hope to do something later this year or maybe early next year after we have some new material. Who knows. |

ps. I love the Pac-man bass.
Well, anything you practice at you'll see an improvement. If you want to get better at playing scales, practice/learn scales. If you want to get better at tapping, practice/learn tapping... if you want to get better at composition, practice writing. Record yourself and listen to it. If you listen to a tape of yourself playing - it will tell you things that you may never notice. sorry, I don't have a "secret sauce" for getting good! Just work hard, imagine a goal, and strive for it. |

You rock
I already honed my tapping technique before I heard Michael, but I think he's got killer technique and I love what he does with the Hyperbass. And plus he plays the bass with so much joy and character. I only got into Michael a couple of years ago and he inspired me to try some solo pieces (I've been an ensemble guy the whole time and that's how I've always written). He's given me some great tips for solo playing too and we've discussed how we each came up with different solutions on how to slap on a bass with an extended fingerboard (he rakes the strings, I pull with my fingernails). I talk to him occassionally, so I don't have any questions for him right now (hey michael!). I've hear the name (NHOP) but I don't know if I've heard his playing... I said it before, but I'm not into "bass" players.... I don't read Bass Player magazine and follow bassists. Pretty sad, huh? |

So are you saying that you'd rather play guitar and not bass? and by playing the 7+ string basses you secretly pretending to play guitar? lol  Only joking, ive been hooked to your nuclear rabbit stuff, ive downloaded all the mp3's! You remind me of a crazier soad. my question is, Who where you the most proudest to support?? |
OMFGQWERTY i just saw the video, amazing. when i tap i can't seem to get my left hand to be loud enough.
MY question, probably been asked before, what was your first bass, why did u get into bass? why bass and not piano or guitar? |
Do you agree that making it in the music industry is just Luck? Or do you think that your talent was what has brought you this far?
|
Jean to my knowledge you are primarily a tapper, and utilize the extended range basses quite a bit. It seems to me that a stick would suit you very well. Do you own one? What are your opinions on them?
(A robot couldnt have come up with a more soulless post, but Im temporarily lacking in wit, so its the best I can do at the moment) Thanks |
stupid question
what basses do you use?? |
