Rush is a very talented band. I just got 2112 a 2 weeks ago.
That whole cd is very good. But the song is EXTREMELY good.

symon 03-22-2005 04:31 PM

Alright, I actually gave Rush a chance, and they are good. I'll admit that. They are one of the better bands out there actually. But they are NOT easy to get into. Just because they are experts with their instruments doesn't make them a excellent band. One property of a good band is that they need to be catchy. Hmmmmmm...go figure...no wonder Rush wasn't that big!

shamed-angel 03-22-2005 04:34 PM

Rush are Amazing.

Not that they still weren't technical, but they had much more public appeal than their previous releases. Check out some songs from Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves if you get the chance.
Rush is not that good. So what if they were musical majors? So what?
You is not that good.

funkybeeatch14 03-22-2005 05:27 PM

Favorite Rush album?

IAJP 03-22-2005 05:34 PM

Well..
Caress Of Steel.
I like 2112 a lot too.

There aren't many rock fans who haven't heard Rush's 80's material. I've only talked with a handful of people who haven't heard at the very least Tom Sawyer and Limelight.

Also, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to get at with these sorts of statements. Who cares if a band was never as big as, say, Metallica or the Beatles or Led Zeppelin? Musical proficiency, true influence, and a love for one's art is what makes a band great.

By the kind of logic your using, Fred Durst is better than Matt Barlow because he made it big. Or that Good Charlotte are better than Django Reinhardt because they've sold more records and are "catchier."
Favorite Rush album?
In order:
A farewell to kings
Permanent Waves
2112
Moving Pictures
Hemispheres
Caress of Steel
Fly by night

And Rush in Rio is on my 2 best dvd's ever (other: Led Zeppelin "how the west was won")

thunderzstruck 03-22-2005 06:57 PM

I only have The Spirit of Radio and 2112 :(

tsrocks48 03-22-2005 07:06 PM
Time Stand Still was off of 2112.
Sorry, dude, but Time Stand Still was on Presto, which is a very good album.
It was an honest mistake. I just can't bring myself to rip on a fellow Rush fan!

TRIVIA: did you know that all the effects and multiple parts (I.E., keyboard parts while Geddy is playing on bass, different guitar parts, etc.) are all triggered onstage by the band themselves? It does't sound like much unless you have seen their live show. There are about 5 parts playing simultaneously during Tom Sawyer alone! Gods among men....

3rdplanet 03-22-2005 07:14 PM

Ok, I'm a big Dream Theater fan, but never been able to crack into the Rush sound and I would like to give them another chance by actually buying an album and listening to it a lot and not just downloads...are there any particular albums which may appeal to me?!

I love YYZ now I have said that.

(and Roll the Bones :$)

2112 and moving pictures are generally considered their best efforts by the masses.

B0nz0 03-22-2005 08:02 PM

2112 is a solid album

RCA 03-22-2005 08:12 PM

I've been listening to "Test For Echo" a bit lately. Good album, although I do enjoy Rush's earlier albums more than this one.

fuel4fire 03-22-2005 08:32 PM

Rush is amazing!

Unfortunately, i only own

A Farewell to Kings (vinyl, cd)
Moving Pictures (vinyl)
Exit Stage Left (cassette)

I wish i had more.

My record player is broken so I can't listen to Moving Pictures :upset:

Distant Echoes 03-22-2005 08:37 PM

Moving Pictures is by far my favorite album.

Half of my Rush songs on the computer are live, and the other half studio. Considering i have about 5 hours of each...it gets sort of repetitive; especially since i have some songs on there about 3 times, and unfortunantly rush's concerts are the least bit innovative (with some exceptions)

Next time they come in concert, i dont care how much the ticket, im gettin the best seat i can

Permanent Solution 03-22-2005 08:39 PM

Luckily I've found many CDs at the used store so I own 2112, Farewell to Kings, Caress of steel, Hemispheres and signals. I have several more on mp3 though.

Distant Echoes 03-22-2005 08:42 PM

Rush is the band ive seen most in stores as 'used'. I dont buy the used albums (i keep mine pristine), but i dont know whats up with that either.

La Villa Strangiato's first guitar solo is spectacular on Exit:Stage Left.

I saw them in Hartford in August: 16th row seats. It was a three-and-a-half hour concert. It was awesome.

thunderzstruck 03-22-2005 11:22 PM

Anyone who doesn't think Alex or Geddy don't have chops they need to go listen to La Villa Strangiato.

Cain 03-22-2005 11:37 PM
Anyone who doesn't think Alex or Geddy don't have chops they need to go listen to La Villa Strangiato.
Too bad no one thinks they don't have chops. :p

"They can't play" is never a criticism that's levelled at Rush. "They can't sing" is, however, and unfortunately there's only a small bit of evidence to the contrary. :-/

YDload 03-23-2005 12:05 AM

I think Geddy Lee's voice is awesome. But I also like high-pitched voices from Coheed and Cambria and The Mars Volta. Neither of those bands quite compares to Rush except in the "some people don't like the vocals" department, though.

I got their hits album "The Spirit of Radio" and I'm really getting into the songs, learning to play them on bass and stuff. Really fun.

That, my friend, is a load of sh**, and you know it. Unlike most artists, I've never heard Geddy sing out of tune. Everything he does is constructed to fit the song, and nothing more. Pure genius!

Thunder Fingers 03-23-2005 01:08 PM

i so wanna see rush.. sorry Iron Maiden for saying this, but it might had been the biggest thing that had happened to me.. but chances are rather small that they will come to norway...

and you have do be deaf to say that Rush dont have chops....

And geddy lee is awsome! I love his voice... but his bass playing most of all.. he have putted the standard, and no rock bassist can reach it...

Cain 03-23-2005 01:12 PM

Chill out, fanboy. He's had his fair share of strained nights, and in the early days his voice was nearly unlistenable to many people. His voice is still very hard to get into for most folks, and although it is better now than it was he still has a hard time singing the old material correctly due to the relative lack of melody in those songs. I love Rush and am ok with his voice, but other people have ears too, and most of them would tell you that Geddy's voice is girly or just awful, and there's few truly normal-register moments with which to prove them undeniably wrong, is all I'm saying. His voice is so unique that it's always going to be a toss-up between hatred and affection, and most people will choose "hatred." I may disagree with them that it sucks, but I will agree that it's very unlike the style of most other singers I consider to be good.

Thunder Fingers 03-23-2005 01:16 PM

Geddy can sing higher than most girls realy... ever heard "Avilable light"? i was like: "Jeeeez! is that possible for a guy?!"

Try "The Fountain of Lamneth Part I." :-/

I love Rush so much, though. Alex Lifeson has got it all as a guitar player: he's one of my primary influences.
