Chris from Florida, I'm in the running for old man of the board. Hadn't played since I was 13 and now 20 years later (do the math) my wife got me a pdp cx for christmas. These boards are great to catch up on the latest technology (had no idea you could play double bass without having 2 bass drums) and pick up on the new talent out there to listen to. Fav's are Peart, Bonham, Copeland, Baker, Ward (yes they are all old to).

What were Adam and Eve like? :p Good choices for drumming influences! Pacifics are very good, and durable as all hell. |
My name is David, i'm 16 and i live in a minneapolis suburb up here in MN where it's.... warmer than texas. I've played drums for... gee.... a year and a half or so. yeah, bout there. I listen to everything that is not pop-rap or country western or opera. I drum in my church's contemporary services choir.
Apart from drumming, i have no life, because i have no friends and my girlfriend of 2 years and i have recently (like, tuesday) broken up. yep. I play in a band as well, check out http://www.anewtomorrowmn.com for some pics or whatnot. |

Cool everyone. By the way, Jim or Damo, were the forums down for a while yesterday? I couldn't access them.

Cool. I hate site screwups.

My name is Mike, and i live in a northern Chicago suburb. I've been drumming for a year and a half. My music tastes are classic rock and late folk and blues. my favorite and most influential drummers are John Bonham, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell, and Ginger Baker. o and the weather sucks up here right now!

People, keep this thread going, I thought it could be a nice resource.
|
Umm...just to keep a thread going: I just got my Driver's License and registered and Insured my car, feels so good to finally have my own form of transportation. I know most of you are gonna say "wait for the bills, kid" well that's why I've been working for the past 3 months saving pretty much all my money, so as long as I keep it up, I should have enough spare money to enjoy having a car, and pay for it at the same time...anyone else just recently get their license/first car?

Hi. New here. I've only read a few messages so far. Are you ALL kids? Jeez, I was hoping this woulda' been a site with some folks with some knowledge, 'cause I desperately need that.
Callin' you old fogies out there. ;-) Seriously, any help with anyone would be appreciated, young or old. But I need advanced advice. I'm 33. I just worked my A$$ off for God knows how long, working one sh!+ job after another. Sometimes holding down two and even three jobs at a time! But it paid off, because now I got over $12,000 and I'm quittin' my day job. I'm keeping the weekend one though (actually getting enough weekend work to almost make-up for the money I'll be losing), but my weeks are totaly free. I'm building a recording studio. Oh yeah, as good as done. The most high-tech in all of Arizona. Gonna' get me a new computer and invest heavilly in pro-tools gear. But right now, I'm trying to figure out a few things. Trust me, you guys will hear from me in the future. I need a lot of advice. For one, I'm trying to figure out how to buid my drum kit. I'm no real drummer, I have to put the high-hat on my right. ;-) But I get by. I found this sweet Gretsch 5-piece with no cymbols or high-hat for $480. I think it's a safe bet I can get the dealer down to $350 at least, esepcially if I mention that I might be back with my twelve grand and that I just might purchase the Fender Jaguar bass hangin' on the wall... But I'm wondering a lotta' things. Maybe I should go more into detail when I can post my own thread, but I'm just too anxious to figure some o' this S out. One BIG thing I'm wondering is what's the deal with snare sizes? Bass drums too, I might imagine. Man, it'd be ideal for me if there was a set standard size. I really need to know what the best size is without investing in tons of crap along the way. I need a better sound than the crap I always had available to me in the past. I always had a real plastic sound with the kits I played with. I need something full. Maybe getting a few different size snares might be an idea too, I'm toying with. But I'd realy like to keep my spending for each instrument to a minimum, while keeping the highest standard possible. Then there is the decision on the best sounding cymbols too. And skins, can't forget skins. I really want high quality everything, as I am trying to create studio perfection. If one thing's off, it's gonna' bug the crap outa' me. Anyhoo, without going into any further detail about who I am, I'll just appologize for the length of this message and end it now. ;-) |
Well, every major drum manafacture will have high end ranges of kits. I havn't tried many but others have so i'll let them tell you about them.
For cymbals, the big 3 (Sabian, Zildjian & Paiste) have plenty of professional lines. Its just a matter of taste; You may prefer a dark sounding crash, or a bright ride. Who knows. Best idea is to go and try them out. Same with heads, although Remo ambassadors and emperors (or Evans G1s and G2s) are good head choices. But its generally all about opinion, as one cymbal/head may sound great to one person's ears, but terrible to someone else's. Hope that gave a bit of an insight. |

That being said, you'll most likely have a variety of acts walk through your door, and the studio kit should be multi-purpose. I would get a kit with a 16x20 kick, 'cause it's punchy enough for smaller groups, but big enough to give some oomph if you run it through compressors. As for snares, seems to me like most standard snares are in the 5-6x14 area, so anywhere in there will be fine. If a drummer REALLY wants a super deep snare, chances are he'll bring his own, although some drum shops will let you rent equipment for that sort of thing if it's really a big deal. As for toms, it's always nice to have a wide assortment, but standard sizes work best for multi-purpose recording. Something like 9x10, 10x12, 12x14 and/or 14x16. I prefer birch for recording. |
Old Fogie...
Geez, now I feel like the old Fogie!!
My name is Rich and I'm from Warren, MI (North of Detroit) and I'm 40 (yikes!) I played percussion from Junior High partway through college. Played marching band, concert band, pit orchestra, jazz band you name it.... Toured Europe with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp travelling international concert band and jazz band one summer, that was COOL! So I sold my set off halfway through college (a late 70's Slingerland metallic blue) cuz I was strapped for cash and didn't have time to play them.... Graduate, get a job, get married, have kids etc...... somewhere in the back of my mind I miss playing... not just the drum set but all percussion! Last year I joined the Warren Concert Band, a local community band that's been around for about 35 years now, god it feels good to play again, with a serious group! Now my oldest son plays percussion too, in the middle school. He's pretty good if I do say so myself! About 2 months ago he gets "invited" to join the jazz band (and yes, it's by invite only) and his instructer calls me one day to say he's doing pretty good but will really needs a set at home to practice with (see the wheels turning  ), turns out all the other drummers in jazz band are 8th graders and will be graduating this year, there are no 7th graders and he's the only 6th grader invited to join so far, odds are somewhat good he may be the ONLY drummer next year in jazz band. So, the wheels are turning, his birthday is tomorrow and he will be surprised with a Pearl Export set (Dark wine/black hardware) and Meinl CMS cymbals, god I can't wait to set it up and surprise him, and then sit down and start showing him some moves....... :D :D :D :D :D This is a great forum!! |
Wow! your a cool dad! I would love for that to happen to me. Or for even my parents to approve of my drumming... ahh well..
|
This thread died to fast, time to get the electric shock treatment out.
favourite drummer to form a band
Phil Collins went solo after Genesis so if that counts definatley him. I grew up listening to Peter Gabriel and that got me into Genesis which got me into Phil Collins. :) And so the thread is reborn and the circle of life continues... |
I would have to say Probot. That band is too good.

Definitely. That band is great. Dave puts out some cool stuff that isn't overly technical, but sounds so cool with the songs. |
