it goes, 8 on 8, 10 on 10, and 12 on 14

bobby__johnny 01-06-2005 06:37 PM

well, if you can find a chinese cymbal in 8",10", or 12", then your in luck.

then stack it on top of a splash or crash, and your set.

Debating over whether to replace my ZBT ride or hihats... for a ride I'm looking into something with a lot of stick definitionq, and I don't know what I want from my hihats, but something versatile (usable in death metal and classic rock). The only ride that really caught my ear at Sam Ash was a Zildjian Ping Ride, any other suggestions from other brands? Hi-Hat suggestions would be appreciated as well, thanks.

bobby__johnny 01-06-2005 06:50 PM

well, the Sabian AA Rock ride has always been a ride that perked my ear. as for hats, maybe some A. New Beats or AAX Stage Hats.

Kosmos Tree 01-07-2005 05:41 AM

Well, yesterday my China finally "died" so i need a new one.

Now i'm bit short on budget and i guess some advice would be good.
I want a trashy and explosive china in 16".

I was thinking about getting a Wuhan, but i'm unsure about their durability, and i don't want to buy a new one in 4 months.

Some others i had in mind:
Paiste 802/Alpha
Sabian ProSonix
Meinl Raker/Amun

I try to test as many cymbals as possible but i don't have a store here with a good selection, so any advice is appreciated :)

bobby__johnny 01-07-2005 02:07 PM

Amun is a very versatile line...probably along the same tones of AA i believe....the Pro Sonix isnt really that trashy, but the regular PRO model is a good allaround china...same goes with the B8 Pro model.

At the moment I have the Peavey Hi-hats that came with my kit, Peavey Ride and a Stagg 16" Crash, I have quite a bit of money saved up and was wondering:

a) whether to add to my cymbals eg. a splash, second crash, X-hat

b) Sell my cymbals and replace them for better ones.

I play a lot of progressive metal/rock, this can be difficult with just the one crash cymbal and no splash or anything. Also, which ARE better, sabian or zildjian? Any recommendations?

~Sam~

Jezen 01-09-2005 11:05 AM

Lookin for a non cymbal giant equivalent of a zil/ice bell. Any help?

bobby__johnny 01-09-2005 11:37 AM

LP Icebell.
b) Sell my cymbals and replace them for better one
that would be a better idea for your needs. and you dont need a ton of cymbals to play progressive rock. big kit syndrome occurs as a misconception of needing such sizes for metal and prog.

LiquidTensionTheatre 01-09-2005 11:49 AM

ok thanks, any ideas? I know the names of some different types of cymbals, but don't know how they relate to sounds etc... A friend said Zildjian ZXTs are a good choice, another said a Sabian AAX's... neither of them are reputably well-informed though...

~Sam~

bobby__johnny 01-09-2005 11:53 AM

well, ZXT arent very great. AAX's a a great line, but too focused in my opinion.

lines to look for.

Zildjian: A, A Custom
Sabian: AA, AAX
Paiste: Innovations, 2002

these are all fairly affordable cymbals of excellent quality. all are Professional models too.

groomits 01-09-2005 01:35 PM
Also, which ARE better, sabian or zildjian? Any recommendations?
There is no really better lines... Zildjian and Sabian are fairly the same quality. I think that Paiste signature is a little better, but I dont know much about paiste.

bobby__johnny 01-09-2005 02:38 PM

Sabian = Paiste = Zildjian.....doesnt matter what you buy from these brands when you go high quality...its all gonna be good.

Paiste has the advantage in low end cymbals though.

bobby__johnny 01-11-2005 03:27 PM

Jim...I think this needs another sticky :thumb:

Thanks

Ok Everyone I Want A Good Pakage In Australian Dollars Of Cheap Cymbals That Are Sabians Or Paiste Cymbals , I Need A Set Of Hi Hats, Crash , And A Ride, I Play Rock I Have The Factory Cymbals And Theyre Absolute Crap Btw Sorry Bout The Caps Lock My Caps Key Is Screwed.....

GooseFilms.net 01-11-2005 10:42 PM

todays my bday, and i just got $100 from my parents. also im having a party saturday, which will probably bring in a minimum of $200, and that can mean only one thing: Time for a new ride cymbal.

I love the zildjian k custom line, and currently im leaning towards the 20" K Custom Ride, but before i commit to anything, are there any more cymbals like this i might be interested in? Something fairly dark enough wash to give it a body but not so much that it destroys stick definition. preferably something that can cut through fairly loud music, but don't let that be the leading factor, it will probably just mean I'll take the smaller ride model over the larger. Any good sabian recommendations are also appreciated, dont bother with paiste though, theyre just too expensive

Right on.

DruMMeR_BoY14 01-12-2005 06:45 AM

mmmm K Customs rides sound great, a really warm dark sound with a bit of wash but still good stick definition, great bell. from Zildjian I'd look at the K and K heavy rides, from Sabian... maybe a hhx evolution ride, I'm sure bobby could give you some info on some Sabian rides to look into.

llama123 01-12-2005 12:25 PM

Umm one thing.
I take it by the 'HH' part of the HHX Sabian line that they are hand hammered.
Am i correct in thinking this?

Thanks,
Tom

bobby__johnny 01-12-2005 04:38 PM

yes. Hand Hammered and HHX are hammered by Hand, and hand only.

sabian Pro/Sonix or Xs20, and Paiste 802 or Alpha. medium priced, medium-high range cymbals.

oVeRmYhEaD 01-13-2005 01:04 AM
yes. Hand Hammered and HHX are hammered by Hand, and hand only.
Why is the Hand Hammered line the most expensive then? What qualities over HHX does it have?

PowerStamp 01-13-2005 01:19 AM

Just an update...
I am possibly very happy now! I just bid on some 13" Groove Hats, the exact model and size I was wanting, in "near-new" condition (still has barcode sticker, look totally new, slightly used), and hopefully I will win them.

Kev 01-13-2005 02:21 AM

I'm thinking of getting the Sabian Pro 14" Hi-Hats, AAX 16" Plosion crash, and an 18" crash. I can't decide what to get for the 18". I want it to be something that sounds similar to the 16" Plosion, but still noticably different if I hit the two. I want it to sound semi-heavy to heavy with a medium decay (i'm not sure if it's called decay, but I'm trying to say with not a long sustain but also not a short sustain?). I'm thinking of either the AA Medium or AA Medium Thin. What do you guys think? I also don't have a big budget.

Also, what do you guys think about the Pro Hats? Would I be fine with those or do I REALLY need to invest in a higher line?

Money$hot 01-13-2005 12:27 PM

Now that I've got a Rockstar custom Fusion kit, I wanna upgrade my cymbals too. My ZXT hats, ride and crash just don't sound like they really go with the kit, but my Avedis thin splash sounds really nice. I really want to stick with Zildjian though, and I'll probably start by upgrading the hats and ride first. I'm not too familiar with the different Zildjian ranges though as far as which ones work better for death metal over which ones I would want for my fusion kit. What would sound good for more laid-back alt-rock [in the quietest to loudest range of say, Pearl Jam]? Thanks

bobby__johnny 01-13-2005 05:24 PM
Why is the Hand Hammered line the most expensive then? What qualities over HHX does it have?
Hand Hammered And HHX are Equally priced....at least they should be anyway. if one is more expensive than the other at your store (Provided both are same size) then their doing something wrong. bring it to their attention.

as for HHX/HH differences....the HHX line is a tad brighter, and has enhanced projection. the HH line is your traditional dark sounds...on the lines of K's and such.

-TheGlassPrison- 01-13-2005 05:28 PM

Yeh, HHX are very dark.. They Are Country/Pop Cymbals IMO... altouhg there are 1 or 2 i like..
i just am not a fan of the extreamly long sound..
