i think that mick thompson the guitar player has tons of talent
:thumb:
ok, here it goes. MY OPINION!!!
Mick can come up with INSANELY AWESOME RIFFS. i mean, no one can deny that his riffs are the sh1t, but still...if you look at their tabs (someone else also said this i dont know how to do 2 quotes) theyre soooo simple. i mean, The Vermillion Part 2, that is so f*ckin easy to play. (sic) is all open strings, except the last note which is a bar chord on the first fret. and The Blister Exists sounds INSANE, but its just string bending on the thirteenth fret on the E. i mean, the riffs sound awesome, but theyre extremely simple to play. Mick is a CLEVER guitarist, but hes not a GOOD guitarist. ill give him that. dont get me wrong, SlipKnot is my favorite band of all time, but i (unlike most "little slipknot followers") look at the band with REALITY in mind. i know there are MANY bands more talented than slipknot.
well thats my 2 cents!! :thumb:

Yeh that solo on Pulse of The Maggots doesnt really appeal to me, something more melodic which does not spoil the flow of the song would have been better, but Mick Thompson is very good, no one can deny that, though i aggree that a lot of the riffs he writes are quite simple. Paul as a bassist has gone slightly downhill aswell, judging my the difference between his playing on the first album (MFKR) and the current songs. Corey is a good singer, and has a lot of variation to his voice but it does sound at its best when he isn't screaming, which is overdone a bit. Most of their songs don't really have a great flow to them (I havn't listened to them in a while so I may be wrong) which makes them hard to enjoy.
I think they should aim for a wider audience with their music, as currently not many people can really enjoy them, they should do another MFKR type album, with varying songs on it.
But hey thats just my opinion, flame it if you must.

I think the riffs are simple, and sound bad. Thanks for realising that there are many more bands more talented than Slipknot. I really don't care if you like them, but favourite band of all time is a bit much. I guarantee you that will change.

bumskin 08-03-2004 10:15 PM

Actually I agree with whoever said the solo in Pulse of The Maggots was bad. It is possibly the most random unmelodic solo ever. Duality was kinda cool tho

feedthegods666 08-04-2004 08:02 AM

SlipKnot really shouldnt try to do solos, they should just stick with what they do best

Amen to that.

PurgeTheDaemon 08-06-2004 07:56 AM

SlipKnot aren't the *greatest* band out there, but I must say, I give them credit; They got me into the metal scene, as it is;

I saw them live on the Jagermeister music tour...they put on an incredible show...simply that, it can't be called anything less than incredible (Chimaira and Fear Factory OWNED as well)

Mick and James are NOT bad guitarists; In fact, they are incredible, but I do not believe that SliPKnot does their skills justice; They can write heavy riffs (not THE heaviest) and they can be enjoyable to listen to...

And with the mask and the "maggot" ordeal, who the **** cares? Music is about the music, and gimmick or not, the "masks" shouldn't influence your opinion on a band...

I guess I could list my top "10" songs, since I got here late, anyway

1) Some Feel (MFKR)
2) Purity (Un-released)
3) My Plague (Iowa)
4) (sic) (Self-Titled)
5) Metabolic (Iowa)
6) Surfacing (Self-Titled)
7) Spit It Out (Self-Titled)
8) Left Behind (Iowa)
9) SlipKnot (MFKR)
10) Welcome (Volume 3)

I also took the pleasure in making a SlipKnot fan site (www.prosthetics666.cjb.net) a while back, yet I still have to update a lot of stuff :)

Anyway, yeah, SlipKnot will always have a place in my heart
SlipKnot really shouldnt try to do solos, they should just stick with what they do best
Mick and jim wanted too include some of their solos in the first two albums but Ross Robinson said their songs were very melodic and so they didnt need solos. That is why there third album was produced by Rick Rubin as Slipknot wanted too venture new stuff and include solos.

relliK 08-06-2004 03:29 PM
I don't know if this has been talked about or whatever, but I'm stating what I think...

Slipknot are the band I hate the most out of all bands. I have many good reasons.

Lack of Talent/Originality -

I don't think Slipknot are talented at all. I've heard people say "ooo, Mick really shreds". Go listen to some Jason Becker or something, and then try to tell me Mick can shred. I've looked at numerous Slipknot tabs and they all digust me. So many people also so Joey is really good at drums. I'm a drummer, and I hear nothing sepcial from him. In fact I don't even think he's that great or original with his drumming. Also, there's the lyrics and song meanings. Most of Slipknot's songs are about depression and suicide, typical nu-metal style. It makes me sick
Go look at some old Sabbath tabs Im sure you'd find them equally disgusting.Im not comparing Thompson to Iommi but Im just stating that technicality isnt everything.I learned to play Sabbath songs within a week after picking up a guitar.Mick CAN shred. Not the best but he can.Try to find the video that was on the Line 6 website that he did. You'd be surprised.Joey is a really talented drummer. Not the best but he is talented.Go to a Metallica board and they'll say the same **** about Lars. Not true at all,but people that really like them will express it in that way that seems ignorant as ****.Kinda like a guy would say "my girlfriend is the most beautiful girl in the world".Its more of a way to show admiration rather than stating fact.I think Pete Sandoval,Flo Mounier,Nick Barker, they are all better than Joey.I just like Joey's style better.
The Whole 9 Member Thing -

This actually makes me laugh. I find it really funny how Slipknot can have 9 members and play as poorly as they do. I can think of countless bands that sound better than slipknot and play with 5, 4 or even 3 members. I don't get why they need two percussionists, they don't add anything to the music. I saw Duality live on Leno and one of them hit a garbage can. Now that's talent. The whole sampler and DJ thing is stupid too. Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater does all of their samples and plays the keyboard like a god at the same time. Slipknot could have two members and be just about as good. I make better music by myself than Slipknot does with 9 people.
Ignorant last sentence there. But anyway the 9 member thing did actually play a role in their most recent album. There was use of a moog keyboard, congas, triangles, xylophones,a grand piano,3 part vocal harmonies, timpani drums, stuff that a 5 piece band wouldnt be able to pull off live. Its not technical because its not meant to be.Its music you can enjoy without the annoyance of show off solos that are present in Dream Theater.Aside from that they are showmen, their live shows wouldnt be as intense with 5 members.Thats why their shows are fun to mosh at,and fun to actually watch the stage as well."A sonic assult on all your senses".
Bad Influence -

Slipknot is typical whiny nu-metal. They are making kids more "depressed" then they already were by making them think life is so hard. I see tons of Slipknot fans that are all dressed in black with chains and spikes and make up. Goth kids make me angry. Suck it up and get a life. Listen to some real metal.
You act like Slipknot is the only ****in band in the world that is a "bad influence" on people.Im sure Cannibal Corpse's lyrics are a great influence on people.Goths are idiots I agree. But anyone that listens to Slipknot should know that there is an underlying positive message in their lyrics.I have drawn nothing but positivity from their lyrics. When Corey speaks of all the depressing ****,he does it in a philosophical manner. He is in no way saying he agree's with it.He drops hints in the songs that tell you it's not right to do it.Besides, who really takes dudes in masks all too literal.
Gimmick -

The MASKS. Wow, you don't want to be recognized in public, big deal. Pay the price for being famous. Maybe if they get rid of those silly costumes they can make some good music while they are at it.
Yeah I agree the masks are a bit stupid.Quite stupid actually. It's funny when I hear black metal fans bash Slipknot for wearing masks. At the same time they are the one's listening to bands that wear corpse make up and spikes all over their bodies.Ironic.But anyway,Slipknot may have a gimmick when it comes to their image, but they keep that clear from their music. The masks dont affect the music at all.Corey's lyrics are him expressing his views on the world.Slipknot's message to their fans has been to be who you are, dont take people's judgements about you to heart because their opinion shouldnt matter to you.I salute Slipknot for that.No gimmick in that.Slayer on the other hand puts on a satanist front in their lyrics. That is a gimmick for sure.Do Cannibal Corpse really eat dead bodies? No,gimmick?Yes.Besides, many bands have gimmicks without even knowing it.I'd like to see Tom Arraya cut his hair so I can see all these Slayer fans bitch about he he looks gay now.Its the same ****.People are just to ignorant to see it that way. They cease to relize that the true gimmick lies within the music, not image.
Anyway, I don't want to go on much longer, the fact is Slipknot is bad for you
Well gee thanks for the advice!!But your not my ****in mom.So **** off.

gmoneyguy 08-06-2004 03:35 PM

Maggots of the Knot

I wonder who came up with that idea...o.O

that's almost like Testament's "Disciples of the Watch", only that they substituted Disciples with "Maggots", and Watch with "Knot"

That's just what I think...it would be funny though if they did make it into a song

limpbizkit_maggot 08-06-2004 06:10 PM
where did you hear it?
you can hear it on the disasterpieces dvd. its on the second disc i think....

I would just like to put it out there that slipknot is probably up there with the worst bands I have ever heard, and they have never made, nor is it likely they will ever make good music.

Well, people are entitled to their own opinions and if you dont like them thats fine. But I think the ones that say they have close to no talent are only passing judgement.I encourage you to listen to Vol.3 from top to bottom.I think that this album proves that there is talent within the band.It has already silenced some bashers. It may surprise you if you drop pre-concieved notions or biased feelings.
