60's. There was nothing like a Dead concert..................................

*puts on Dark Star*

Thank you Jerry. R.I.P.
It wasn't just The Grateful Dead though. It was The Who, The Big Brother and The Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Captain Beefheart, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, C,S,N, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Buffalo Springfield, Quicksliver Messenger Service, The Velvet Underground, James Gang, The Doors, Blind Faith, Alice Cooper, The MC5, The Mothers of Invention, ect...

Yea, I know that and I listen to all of those great bands too(besides The Who). I'm just mentioning The Grateful Dead because they were one of the best, if not the best groups back then(and still now). Plus I'm in a Jerry kinda mood. Also there were more great bands back then like Steppenwolf, Steve Miller, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hendrix, Cream, Byrds, Yardbirds, Blue Cheer, The Band, Zappa(not a typo) and maybe a few others a forgot. PHEW!

Badmoon, I think mine and your list pretty much sums it up. But, on a side note.......I still love the 70's music. But the 60's are just.... undescribeable and unbelieveable and amazing. Peace my hippie friends.

B0nz0 03-21-2004 06:43 PM

60's and 70's were when rock was at it's pinacle. today it seems to be going further down hill...but along the way there were some 80's greats, like queen, ac/dc, van halen, billy joel, etc. let's not forget them, they are classic rock as well.

i notice no1's mentioned george thorogood, the doobie bros., iron butterfly, the animals, srv, journey, styx, the moody blues... etc. what are some of ur favorite lesser know classic rock artists?

Badmoon 03-21-2004 06:55 PM
iron butterfly
I do not see why people are fasinated with this band. Their a band with one liked song (That I don't even like), that is strangley similar to "Sunshine of your Love" *whink, whink*.

Badmoon 03-21-2004 06:59 PM
like queen, ac/dc, van halen, billy joel, etc
Actually, each of those bands began in the 70's, and gained some good fame then, but not as much fame as in the 80's.
i notice no1's mentioned george thorogood, the doobie bros., iron butterfly, the animals, srv, journey, styx, the moody blues
Most of those bands are good. Especially The Animals, they are true british blues. The Rolling Stones don't play blues half as good as The Animals, yet the R.S are known for doing it best.
I just find the 70's cheasy as hell. Like the music was pointless it was all about useless feelings and thoughts.

But what I think doesn't make it true.
opinions are good, see i think that way about the 60's lol. fact is, great rock from teh 60's inspired the sound of the 70's which i love and when people look back they see the mid 60's- the 70's as rocks pinicale years simply because that was when music was at its purest.

Yeah, everybody was a drugie and it was all party party party. But they sure had some great musicians.

Kiss=most pointless band ever :thumb:

Badmoon 03-21-2004 08:27 PM

Kiss aren't pointless. They brought an element to the Rock world that made it that much more interesting, and helped get more people into it. Not counting they were original in a way, and they played catchy songs. See, they have a point.

P.S. Their lineup did include Ace Frehley, who was a great guitarist.

VoodooChild 03-21-2004 08:28 PM

Amen to that.

Ace was an alright player but that's about the only good thing about KISS.

Well, Detroit Rock City was KISS related and it was a good movie so yea. But they suck otherwise.

VoodooChild 03-21-2004 08:46 PM

Back to the topic: WHY 60's PWNED ANY OTHER DECADE.

Badmoon 03-21-2004 09:18 PM

Woodstock , that is just simply another reason why the 60's were superior to other decades. Don't forget the Monterey Pop festival. That is like the little brother to Woodstock, though it came earlier.

thanks you!

Kiss, i never knew what people saw in Kiss until i saw them live and went home and listend to my Kiss cd's and than it hit me....Kiss wrote some of the most energetic, uplifting, and powerful music id ever heard. alot of people know in here that i am an Ace Frehley buff, i love Ace to death...a real bluesy lead pioneer in hard rock bands and you can spot his influence in countless 80's shredders like Freidman and Skolnick among others. Even his 4 solo albums are just incredible rock n roll music the way it was ment to be played, loud and heavy. The fact that all 4 members took turns writing for the band, not to mention singng, Kiss had so much to offer song wise. Rock shows were great before Kiss came around, but when Kiss introduced their side of what they thought a stage show should be like, fans immediatly took onto it, and its not hard to see why. Kiss didnt write songs, they wrote anthems...words to live by, and are the driving force behind what made Rock n Roll a lifestyle for some people. women, sex, drugs, and rock....Kiss are untouchables.

NakedRaygun872 03-21-2004 11:23 PM

Lou Reed.
He wouldn't be just one genre though.

Finnaly somone mentioned Jimi. My favorite band of all time is Led Zeppellin, those guys are godly man. BTW I'm 14 :D

chopsticks 03-22-2004 12:51 AM

I just saw aerosmith in concert this march 14...man, they were awesome...I won the tickets as well...I signed up for the contest drawing at a local fastfood restaurant...and about 3 weeks later I get a call from the radio station saying I won 2 tickets...

ieatalotoftacos 03-22-2004 01:05 AM

I don't know if you guys knew this, but the 60's, 70's, and 80's are over. Let's try to live in the now. I enjoy Pink Floyd every now and then, but it's hard to get excited over bands that are never coming back. Sorry to burst your bubble and all

FrailandBedazzled1979 03-22-2004 01:16 PM

Aerosmith are one of the greatest live acts you'll ever see, espicially when they play "seasons of wither" and "nobody fault".

Ent 03-22-2004 01:36 PM

depends on what u define ''classic rock'' as...

I'm sure they are, but last time they came to my town they just weren't good. The show was terrible, but I'm sure it was just a bad day for them. And they played to much of Joe Perry's solo stuff.

Hmmm, live in the now........ OK THEN! You want to come with me to the Good Charlote concert next week. Oh right, week after that we can both go to the 50 cent concert. Then there is always a Britney concert if it's not enought. Just call me when you want to come. :thumb:

Jet Black Stare 03-22-2004 07:33 PM

Jet has a good classic rock sound.

AC/DC are my fav. classic rock band! Led Zepplin is no.2

BludgeonySteve 03-22-2004 07:38 PM
Jet has a good classic rock sound.
Yes but if they were back in the 70s they would be really average. Hmm they are really average today :p. Certainly some of the worst rock and roll ever made.

Edit: Zeppelin is my favorite band and ac/dc are 5th. :thumb:

RockBassist89 03-22-2004 07:46 PM

I love classic rock, its a rare thing in my school though :( ... id say about roughly 15% of us like classic rock, zeppelin, the who, ect.

*is listening to "Pinball Wizard"*

fightthapowers 03-22-2004 08:56 PM

i love the who, led zeppelin, the doors, AC/DC, and pink floyd! and guess what? im thirteen. yeah, i know more about this music than my parents who grew up on this stuff!

Listen, I hate all of those bands that you just mentioned more than you know, but you guys need to wake up. The bands you love are never coming back, with the exception of Kiss, Aerosmith, and AC/DC, which are desperately trying to hang on to what they used to be. Try to tell me that Aerosmith's new music doesn't suck, as well as Metallica's new stuff. But I guess if you want to keep thinking to yourself that guys like Jerry Garcia are going to rise from the dead and reunite their respective bands, keep it up.

FrailandBedazzled1979 03-22-2004 11:06 PM

Im an obsessive Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson (solo albums) fan...one of the most unique sounds in the history of rock.

kiss sucks to begin with. who cares whether they're dead or not. they are still better 99% of contemperary music. and many of those artists are coming out with new material. Eric Clapton has released two or three albums in the past couple of years. all of them were quite good. The Yardbirds had a great album after a 20 something year hiatus. the Eagles are back together. Lynyrd Skynyrd put out a new album. Led Zeppelin is releasing live footage for the first time. so maybe it isn't so futile. and don't post here to flame the music the thread is dedicated to. geez

I think you won that :thumb:

New music is pretty pathetic in general. I like a few new bands like RHCP, audioslave, Nirvana (sort of new I guess) and Dream Theater but none of the stuff these days even comes close to beating bands like Zeppelin, Rush, Ac/dc, Pink floyd, Van Halen, The who x1000, Guns n roses, Jethro Tull, Deep purple... etc. It is better to listen to what is good than what is still out right now.
