They have the attitude of a punk band but write metal music. I think attitude is very important in metal and the attitude they have now isn't very metal at all.
|
What's punk about their attitude? I don't seem them making political statements or telling people to get high.
The music they choose to write shows their attitude. The music is still obviously metal so I don't see what you're going on about. |

They act like punks though. Just live drunk and slack.
I think attitude is very important in metal and the attitude they have now isn't very metal at all.
It's how we tell the men from the boys. |
They act like punks though. Just live drunk and slack.
No they don't. Do you have any idea how many metal bands have the "slack off and get drunk" attitude? I'll save you some time. Virtually all of them. |

I never picked that up... |
Is that a joke?
|
No. I get the "fuck off, I don't give a fuck" in your face kind of attitude, but nothing remotely punkish.
|
Isn't that what the punks say?
|
I'm pretty sure a lot of people say that.
|
I'm pretty sure the punks say that too and are known for it.
|
It's very much a metal thing too.
Thrash especially. |
And where did thrash come from?
Yeah that's what I thought. Real metal is about escapism and fantasy. It's not supposed to be about real life its supposed to take you away to somewhere else. |
It sounds to me like you're narrowing "real metal" down to power metal only. There are plenty of "real metal" bands that don't fall into what you just described.
|
And where did thrash come from?
Yeah that's what I thought. Real metal is about escapism and fantasy. It's not supposed to be about real life its supposed to take you away to somewhere else.
Thrash didn't come directly from punk. Punk was an influence on Thrash, but not where it came from. |
How about black metal, that's all about non real concepts, same with most melodic death, heavy metal, regular death most of the time (like nile and behemoth, not cannibal corpse, who I think are very punkish in attitude), and almost all metal really.
|
Oh wow...
Black metal not about real concepts? What about religion and destruction? Death metal bands who focus on violence? Traditional metal bands who go political? Melodic death bands who center on emotion and relationships? All metal is based on real concepts. |

Must I disagree with those two. Please let me know where Arsis takes you, as well as Decapitated :) Other than those two genres (not very punk-ish, IMO) I do see your point. |

I think when you too much stock into the attitude you demean the music. Age of Silence and Winds both have very professional attitudes.
Melodic death bands who center on emotion and relationships?
November's Doom ftw |

Black Metal is about hatred. That is very real. Nile and Behemoth?!? I have no idea where you got that from. |

Melodic death bands who center on emotion and relationships? All metal is based on real concepts.
They take concepts like religion and destruction and make them totally unlike real life. You're thinking of this too literally. I don't think you make sacrifices and kill christians everyday, while you may pray or demote religion. Political metal bands also take things out of that everyday life context by putting you right into the middle of the political crossfire. The melodic death about relationships is something I do agree isn't very metal but they seem to work it in a way most of the time that it is very emotional and make you see from their eyes. |

I agree with the melodic death, but you forget that black metal bands actually back up their words with action. |
But they do portray it in a very fantastical way.
|
To say melodic death metal is not badass is to say that Black Metal photo shoots aren't ridiculous. There will be few who think that melo-death is soft and tender music, and think that black metal pictures are very evil. There will be more who think melo-death is intellectual and musical, and think that Black Metal pictures are ridiculous.
I am one of the latter few. |
Arsis - Seven Whispers Fell Silent
Seven whispers silent On scathing winds the seven whistlers tune Seven cries, blinded eyes Bade the choke on the night Beneath the stare of a cold and blood-dimmed moon Alaster, avenging one Guide my path Live in me, exist to be The festering wounds upon the savior's wrists Calculating the murderous plot for the dozen to fall If that is not metal then I don't know what is. |
Arsis is pure melodic sex!

Amen, brother. EDIT: Arsis - The Sadistic Motives Behind Bereavement Letters I'm so sorry to hear of your bitter loss I know my words can only offer but so much comfort for you Just know that I am here to ease your lonely feelings To fill this time of grieving and remind you it's your fault It's your fault for not caring It's your fault for not knowing that he'd try again And again, these words can only offer But so much comfort for you Seems pretty damn real to me. |
Conflict, terror, hear the noise
You're in the edge of a nerve-racking force Oh my god, here's a fight Never siege, never riot, must defy When you look at me, what do you see Another trophy like a ****in dead beat Close your eyes, take a step inside Guess what I took your life/step back uncover your eyes Insanity and normality (is/its) not What you call reality What you will, always want It was the day that you should die I dont give a flying **** mother****er I dont give a flying **** mother****er I dont give a flying I dont give a flying I dont give a flying ****! 'll never wait for the pain of death With a bullet in my gun dont **** over my **** Can you hold my crazy as I go So **** hypocrisy and **** you too This is the difference between bands liek Arsis who may talk about real life concepts and Bodom. The Arsis lyrics were very metal and many people will tell you those Bodom lyrics are certainly not even close. The whole album isn't like that though I wouldn't go as far as saying that The slaying at Bodom from so long ago Still carry a secret, of which nobody knows A seed that was planted as the night turned to dawn Will now bring me to life as the reaper's spawn I'm a bastards of Bodom and I walk alon As I follow the reaper, to lead me back home My victims shall perish on the shores of this lake As they look upon me, to stare death in the face I don't need a reason, and I won't tell you why I'll just take you to hell by the edge of my scythe! I was born to end life, I can take any form A shapeshifting demon, killing for sport Like father, like son, this is my fate Taking your lives and breeding the hate! I don't need a reason, and I won't tell you why I'll just take you to hell by the edge of my scythe! Now that is certainly very metal. |
