A better Anthrax?!?! Impossible!
A better Anthrax?!?! Impossible!
Nah, it's possible.

FatalEnergy 07-27-2006 01:05 PM

The first album by them is okay, but nothing spectacular. Pretty boring to me in fact. After the first album they turned to crap.

NP: Nocturnus - Lake of Fire

Nepenthe 07-27-2006 01:08 PM

Spreading The Disease, Among The Living, and Persistence Of Time are masterpieces, I don't care what anyone says.

sensitiveorgan00 07-27-2006 01:10 PM

Anacrusis own hard. Their first album, at least.

REIGN OF TERROR...>TERROR! RAHH!!
Spreading The Disease, Among The Living, and Persistence Of Time are masterpieces, I don't care what anyone says.
I know you don't care...but I agree with Spreading the Disease and Among being masterpieces. I would rank Persistsence lower. But overall, I would say Anacrusis > Anthrax, even though it's not quite fair, because Thrax has many more albums that Anacrusis. Bah.

Freezing Moon 07-27-2006 02:56 PM

I like the first Anacrusis album and then a few assorted songs from the others.

Apocalyptic Raids 07-27-2006 05:49 PM

Anthrax are alright, but there's better stuff out there.

np: Candlemass - The Well of Souls

Super Wotan 07-27-2006 05:53 PM

Laaz Rockit - Know Your Enemy is such a killer thrash album. I've only listened to like half of it and it's one of my favorites already.

Apocalyptic Raids 07-27-2006 05:57 PM

Yeah, it's really good. Insanely catchy.

Bazarov 07-27-2006 06:08 PM

FIRE IN THE HOLE!

I only have Annihilation Principle. It's pretty good. Even the cover of Holiday in Cambodia is good.

Freezing Moon 07-27-2006 08:42 PM

The Laaz Rockit I've heard is much more Speed than Thrash Metal. Still, quite good.

np: Dismember - Skin Her Alive

Super Wotan 07-27-2006 08:43 PM

Meh, i'm terrible at telling the two genres apart.

pate 07-27-2006 08:58 PM

I use "speed metal" to describe faster power metal, like early Blind Guardian, but apparently I'm in the minority.
Meh, i'm terrible at telling the two genres apart.

If you want Speed Metal, just listen to Walls of Jericho, Heavy Metal Maniac, Gates To Purgatory, etc. A band like Running Wild or early Helloween epitomize Speed Metal, but some Venom and Motorhead, not to mention of course Exciter for example is Speed Metal as well. Judas Priest is mostly Heavy Metal but they have their Speed Metal moments, not just Painkiller, but a lot of songs have Speed Metal breaks and stuff. Early Slayer deserves mention too. Show No Mercy has plenty of Speed Metal and Thrash Metal on the album, and before that Slayer and songs like Ice Titan are about as Speed Metal as you can get.

An early song like 'Exciter' by Priest is a good example of pure Speed Metal. If you can't tell the difference between Exciter, Ace of Spades, Black Metal, Starlight and Heavy Metal like Children of the Grave, Into The Void, Saints In Hell, Number of the Beat, Am I Evil, or whatever you just don't get it.

Similarly, the above Speed Metal songs are pretty obviously different from Piranha, Burning of Sodom, Whiplash, Tornado of Souls, Angel of Death whatever. Between Speed and Thrash, the differences descripitively aren't that big, it's just that the riffs are styled a bit differently. Heavy Metal riffs and Speed Metal riffs might be pretty similar or they might not, but the tempo is the glaring difference and the riffs are never exactly the same though, they couldn't be if they are needed to coherently create speed. For Speed Metal, the riffs are faster, the music is faster, but it isn't in the Thrash way.

Having more melodic music all-around, especially the melodic solos, and non-shouting vocals are merely tendencies of Speed Metal, they are not essential or defining elements. They just work better with Speed Metal than do Thrash. But let me repeat they are not needed, Venom kills that example. Also I would call an early song like 'Symptom of the Universe' by Sabbath an example of mixing Thrash with melodic Heavy Metal. Metal Church had melodic Thrash as well at times. So it's not just a Speed Metal thing.

Also I don't mean to imply Speed Metal can't have some slower parts and tempo changes, of course it can(Helloween did it, especially for choruses), but the main riffs and the majority of the song has to be speed.

Megadeth are Thrash Metal. Just because Mustaine plays more solos, and has more melody and isn't on the extreme edge of Thrash doesn't mean it isn't Thrash. Where is the Speed Metal? I can see some of it on 'So Far So Good' but that's about it except for maybe some moments hear and there(Hangar 18 as well perhaps). Megadeth is Thrash. The riffs do not have very much resemblance to Ride The Sky, sorry they don't.

Early Metallica can cause a lot of confusion because Kill 'Em All is one album that is considered THE Thrash album but it's really got plenty of Speed Metal moments too. Metallica are the most confusing band actually.

Speed Metal even at its extreme does of course have some obvious similarities to classic Heavy Metal. Even 'pure Speed Metal' can be said to be just Heavy Metal as well. For that reason the arguement could be made that Speed Metal should just be lumped in with Heavy Metal(you could say the same for Power and even Doom Metal as well) and not be considered a sub-category of its own. In any case Speed Metal does have characteristics that seperate it from other Metal.
I got that from a guy on Metal-Archives. That explains things well enough.

FatalEnergy 07-28-2006 02:07 AM

Megadeth seems to have quite a bit of Speed metal tunes. I'm not saying they aren't Thrash. They ARE predominatly a Thrash band, but Poison Was the Cure and My Last Words are definately Speed Metal.

NP: Eidolon - The Oath (Mercyful Fate Cover)

Apocalyptic Raids 07-28-2006 02:14 AM

Hangar 18 is definitely a Speed Metal song.

I wouldn't really ay My Last Words is though.

FatalEnergy 07-29-2006 09:59 PM

Why is this thread on the third page?

This thread gets close to really dying sometimes. Thrash news has been thin lately

Apocalyptic Raids 07-29-2006 10:00 PM

probably because all the old regulars are gone.

The thread has been much better in the past month, though.

FatalEnergy 07-29-2006 10:08 PM

That's true. Municipal Waste is coming to SF, I think might catch that show.

Apocalyptic Raids 07-29-2006 10:13 PM

They're playing here in a couple of weeks. It shall rule.

FatalEnergy 07-29-2006 10:31 PM

My friend's band is opening for Hirax, which is cool for them, I guess, but honestly I find Hirax to be sooo boring.

Apocalyptic Raids 07-29-2006 10:33 PM

I've got their debut, but to be honest I've not listened to it a whole lot.

Katon rules though.

FatalEnergy 07-29-2006 10:36 PM

Yeah, Katon is insane! I got to talk to him once. They play around these parts a lot. They really like making friends with younger thrashers here, even if most of them are poseurs.

Bazarov 07-30-2006 02:05 AM

Sweet Jesus. Municipal Waste was so damn intense. One of the best shows I've been to. My camera's flash is like broken... so they all turned out pretty dark. But my dad managed to get this sick 30 second video of them playing. I also got to meet Land Phil after the show. Jono, you're going to have a fucking blast.

I'm going to post that video and what pics turned out in a minute.

Apocalyptic Raids 07-30-2006 02:08 AM

Awesome.

Bazarov 07-30-2006 09:27 PM

Here's those videos I was talking about.

There's some videos I got. Pictures turned out horrible, I'm trying to see if I can like brigthen them up. I'm somewhere up in front with a Ghoul shirt... that was such an awesome show.

FatalEnergy 07-30-2006 09:29 PM

Awesome

Looks like it was a fun show!

Bazarov 07-31-2006 01:49 AM

NP: Leviathan - Violent Slaughter
Chris Barnes should have kept his vocals like this. I also found Alex and Jack's previous band before CC called Tirant Sin, their stuff on Chaotic Destruction is pretty sick.

FatalEnergy 07-31-2006 01:53 AM

Yeah, very Dark Angel like. Alex and Jack I believe were in a band called Beyond Death. They have a demo called "Yuk Fou", but I can't find it.

It would have been awesome if Barnes sang like that in Cannibal Corpse. He sounds like Don Doty.
