How I recorded "For Another One"

It was recorded on an Apple G4 PowerBook with a lot of RAM, which I bought for exactly this purpose. If you don't have a beefy computer, and a LARGE hard drive, straight-to-computer recording probably isn't for you. I use GarageBand for recording and tracking, and it easily syncs with Reason, which I use for building loops, as well as some mastering. I do the percussion and ambient noises on Reason, export the loops as WAV to the desktop, and just click and drag them into GB. Couldn't be easier.

As far as recording, I've got two peripheral devices that are key: The first is a TASCAM US-122 USB interface, which has two inputs balanced L and R, each of which can either be an XLR or 1/4" input, and it provides 40v of phantom power for a condenser mic (I have an M-Audio Nova). You set GarageBand to use that device for input AND output, plug monitors into the headphones jack of the TASCAM, not the computer, and then you use the TASCAM's direct monitoring volume knob to adjust your monitor level relative to the playback volume. Like I said, the inputs are balanced L and R, so we used L for instruments and R for the mic. That way, we could set a constant output volume on the TASCAM, and just adjust recording volume on GB. So, in GarageBand, you make a new track and set it to be MONO on the channel you're using, depending on if it's a vocal or instrument track, so instruments would be L and vocals would be R, get it? That way, you get a stereo signal. Otherwise, the instruments would only play in the left speaker, and the vocals would only play in the right speaker.

We did vocal effects in GarageBand, which is really versatile for that, but the guitars and bass were done through the next peripheral device, which is a Behringer V-AMP2, which is, in my opinion, all the bang of the top-of-the-line POD for half the price. It's one of the best amp modelers I've ever heard. You just plug it straight into the TASCAM and set the V-AMP volume at the level just below where playing as loud as you can possibly play would clip (there's an overload light on each of the TASCAM's inputs for watching that). I made all the guitar tones there, listening through the TASCAM's direct monitoring, and then just recorded it in GB as a blank track with no effects, though I did do the balance on the GB track. We did one of the bass tones with the V-AMP, too, though it's a guitar device, and they make a separate one for bass. We did the other bass tone with GarageBand effects and set the V-AMP to plain, clean tone. GB effects are fine, just not nearly as good as the V-AMP.

As far as the technical side, that's the whole story. If I need to clarify anything, just let me know.

leiferikson 08-02-2005 10:22 AM

Thanks Jon that was absolutely legendary of you to do that. That is pretty much EXACTLY the info I needed. We already have a a similar setup- G4 Powerbook with GB, mic+monitors (of dubious quality i have to admit) and (I think) the Korg equivalent of the V-AMP2. Im just going to have to put my Ebow purchase on hold and get the TASCAM.

Have you ever used this setup to record live? As in plugging mics into both L+R and recording all the instruments and vocals at once onto one track in GB? What does that sound like? I can just see myself getting frustrated with mastering all this but you do make it sound relatively easy.

Thanks again. I am well and truly in your debt kind sir

JonM 08-02-2005 10:32 AM

It was my pleasure.

I have never done a live track with more than one person with this set-up. I've never even tried to find out if GarageBand could handle recording two tracks at once, and I don't think recording in stereo with a different mic for each channel would be a very good strategy. However, I made sure before I bought this thing that it was designed and properly balanced to run an active mixer into one of the channels, going from there into GB mono. So, if you wanted to record live, you could do so with perfect quality, but it would require another piece of equipment.

Mine came with my report card, as I recall. It didn't have my teachers listed, though, just my tentative order of classes. Except for gym, geography, and government, it'll be pretty sweet. AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP English, German IV, and Wind Symphony.

Ahhh high school.

Ah, okay. Like an algebra 2 class, basically.

I have no clue, I looked at the model of it on the Kubota website and it said 9.0 mph. I know that has to be wrong.
