Indeed. Ah, this 20th century writers. so confused. On a side note referring to music, I think not a single person I know has the slightest idea I touch myself at night playing death/black/heavy/all sorts of metal as well as some alt/indie/jazz/classical/pretty much every single genre. Even some pop. Like Jem, EVERYBODY LISTEN TO JEM. |
I have absolutely no idea. But he certainly knows what he's talking about. When he goes into all the little details about the form and structure though, you really realise how much effort people put in, and how people on here don't even think about it.
Oh, I agree. What I found annoying about him was the insistence on form in an essay I read. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,6903,1593317,00.html I love his comedic work with Hugh Laurie (the guy that plays Dr. House) though I haven't read too much of his poetry. A forum of teenaged 'songwriters' aren't usually going to have the patience to apply those techniques. Then again, I could be wrong and we'd see a resurgence in songs that are just as good poems. |
hehe. I think I support what he says.
Pretty much all the new wave writers and poets and what not really try too hard to be different. Maybe we should all go back to actually using metric lines, and correct stanzas... Yeah sure why not. I'm up for it. |
i cant do that, never could always too corny
|

An overemphasis on form, just like an overemphasis on chaos, can never be good. The reason why the poets he cited are good is because its not immediately obvious that they are writing in form. An amateur writing in form would suck just as hard as an amateur writing livejournal poetry. He's attacking a straw man.

well versed mr ATC, well versed

Oh well. Then he uses these resources to make a better form of poetry. However, I still have a long way to walk on that matter. Especially rhyming well enough so it doesn't look like I'm on acid. |

But you can keep the form and using different methods like caesuras, trochees and phyrric substitutions to make it sound controlled, but not over emphasized. |
Is this subsection of MX only for lyrics?
|
Or the basics of songwriting, as in song structure and arranging.
|
I've decided you can make some nice sounding recordings using Garage Band and a quarter to eighth inch cable as a line in direct from your instrument. Now I just need a condenser mic for vox and I'd be set. Anyone else have an opinion they'd like to state on using this (pretty cheap) method of recording?
|
I tried something similar. It turns out that your computer will gradually slow the recording down because of lapses in the connection even with the fastest of computers if you're using a cable. You need a DAW connected by USB.
|
I have like microphones all over my house. But the way to go would be setting up a room with clothing in places where sound might get out (you know, mere physics principles) And using a regular computer one.
Black metal is a good genre to do that. |
I think I'm the least critiqued regular in this place. My pieces fall off the first page in just a day. :upset:
|
Oh shut up that's because you're awesome
and about 79% of the time your work confuses me a lot  I'll go fellate your piece. |
Blimey, over 1,000 words of crit for DeadReligion in the in-depth. That hurt.
Cheers DFelon for clearing the mess up :D |

That's cause some of your stuff is bloody confusing. The tortoise line in particular from your latest song left me sitting there just thinking  wtf for several minutes. |
The tortoise is what holds up the Earth in many cultures' beliefs about the nature of our planet. By many, I mean Hindu and Japanese cultures. The Hindus have a few elephants above the tortoise though. I figured for a song about the creation of cliches, a creation myth would be particularly apt. I'll try and keep it simple the next time. :)

wowi never really even saw your peice on here, i always just enjoy them in LC

Yes using that stuff can be overbearing for some people, but no. Make them hard and completely strange to make them worth reading and confusing people. That's something I like of your pieces. Complexity. |
Yeah well you learn something new every day.
(Although I just realised why discworld is held up by a large tortoise- or is it a turtle I can't remember and supported by four elephants.) In that case I really like that idea. |
Heh, thank you for clearing it up. Also, Drumass, I saw it.
|
cheers :thumb:
t'is in black now :) |
hey... to who ever is still around these days... you should help me out by critting my new piece... I'll try to return crits asap.. cheers :chug:
|
Oh sure I will brother. How's stuff, I haven't seen you in a while.
... And you're gone again. :p |
And you're gone again.
haha.. pretty much..
Stuff's ok, I guess.. going back to school on monday *shoots self in the head* how're things here? (and with you TD?) |
Ah they are mediocre, thanks for asking. :)
Real life has been pretty much unexistant, I've been obsessed with this comment a really, really hot girl made to a friend about me, and that's been haunting me at night but not good enough for writing it. About S&L it just coems and goes and comes and goes back again you know, it gets good a day, it gets bad the next, but there's always something to look at. |
I went back to school on the 4th Jan. you're lucky.
I've got the most horrendous writers block. It seems as though I can only write when I'm depressed. So when I'm not posting up stuff you know I'm in a good mood :D Aaaah well, I guess it means I can spend more time crit'ing peoples work. Some of the new guys around here aren't too bad, some leave a lot to be desired, but hey. T'is the same everytime! Tim |
Yeah, I haven't written anything at all in about a week, instrumental or otherwise. Maybe I'll put some things I've been mulling over into a bad poem and post it in a few hours. Maybe.
|
writers block sucks... i had it for 6 months... thats a biznatch and three quarters
|
....can anyone tell me why my vin diesel thread was closed?
|
It's a joke song, or at least it's widely perceived as one.
|
Acoustic
I hate to be a bore because most of this stuff has already been said, but can anyone suggest anygood ways of writing good, mellow acoustic riffs and simple lyrics to accompany because I've got a party with some mates soon and someone always brings out the guitar.
Thanks |
Use the modes... I think ii, iii and vi are good for mellow stuff.
|
Try the Jam Session, there's a theory thread in there. There'll be more people who can help you in there. :thumb:

I wonder why people come here and ask how to apply music to sonwriting when... well. We are writers and lyricists and poets and what not...
Well. I guess I should study morr about music. On a related, yet reall, really sad note I hate institutionalized school systems and the fact that they don't want long-haired punks in their schools. God I hate kissing ass just for a scholarship. :upset: |
aye, I go to a Grammar school. We just had an Ofsted inspection (government check up on schools) and we got 1's in just about everything. 'We' were dissapointed that we got a 2 in modern foreign languages or summin like that. Most schools are ecstatic at getting a 3. That's how stuck up our school is. They've got to be the best at absolutely everything. That also applies to looks!
Hey guys just wondering if anyone else has read the book on poetry by Stephen Fry... it's really interesting.
I've read it! /end of extreme lateness hello all* *that remember insignificant little me:p |
I've always found Fry to be hilarious
For at least 2.3 seconds there i thought you were talking about Futurama... Anyway how is everybody? Nice christmas/New Year? Any revolutionary breakthroughs in the world of lyrics that i missed whilst i was getting enveloped into the magical world on Warcraft? |
