sorry, I can't help you with that, I'm no guitar man
but atleast it's no fault in your mp3

coulnd't it be a E-bow
I've read something about t a bit ago, and that device can make a hellof alot of weird sounds, out of a common guitar

cheers

ps>

welcome back.
haven't seen you on in a hile, were you the person who was busy recording Opeth? or am I wrong?
;)

I have been busy recording some stuff with a few guys...Really no direction or genre specified. We just mess around and make music. Mostly Twin leads...a LOT of twin leads actually. I recently bought Kreator - Enemy of God. I like it a lot. Listened to it maybe 14 times in a row when I got it haha. But I have been mostly playing World of Warcraft. Man that game really takes a hold of your life. At any rate...I have been listening to MAYH every morning on the way to work. Never gets old. idc :thumb:

In crumbling faith I saw her
Bearing her pain in the wilderness
The gleam of her eyes

Would anyone be able to send me a link to listen to "The Moor"?
Wow this thread is growing :D

I have noticed a strange noise in the song April Ethereal for some time...It's right at around 1:46...It's like a high pitched noise. And you can hear some a few seconds before 1:46 also. Do you guys hear that too?

.....Very eerie.
I think it's the acoustic guitar that comes in after the distortion, but all you can hear at that point is the string squeaks from his hand moving.

Iron Man 02-19-2005 03:14 PM

Last Ditch, here's your song

Ive noticed that too.I remember Mikael mentioned the use of mellotrons on that song.I think he said it in the Deliverance/Damnation diary from their official site.It might be that.
are the songs on d*mnation as good as harvest? Cause that song is awesome.
The songs on Damnation are very different from Harvest.Or any of their previous soft songs for that matter. The songs on it have a bunch of keyboard effects on them.Which is a good thing because it keeps the album interesting all the way through.I'd say they are better than Harvest though.

Deth 02-19-2005 07:24 PM

awesome. on the neverending list it goes, right behind Still life.

April Ethereal isn't on Deliverance or ****ation, it's from about 7 years earlier actually.

I'm pretty sure it's string squeaks.

XyleM 02-20-2005 03:32 AM

Could any of you guys upload or direct me to some Opeth to get started? I think I have heard some stuff off 'blackwater park'(?) If thats the album and I would like to download a few songs before I go spend like $28 on an album.

I know that. Its just that Damnation is filled with keyboards and mellotrons.Mikael mentioned that the only previous experimentation with mellotrons was April Ethereal.*goes to read it*

Ok he said the intro to April Ethereal, which is probably Prologue.I guess it is string squeaks. You may have won this time. :upset:

Go to the previous page and download The Moor.Mikael considers it the most accurate representation of what the band is about. Its a great mix of soft and heavy.

the2stranger 02-20-2005 05:53 AM

I wonder if Opeth will ever consider geting a fulltime keyboardist.

but I wonder who would fit that spot, Steven Wilson is way too occupied for that.
I liked the session keyboardist on their last tour: per Wiberg, but he plays with, the spiritual baggers, if I'm not mistaken, and deathmetal isn't really his style.

any thoughts?

Cardboard Headgear 02-20-2005 06:01 AM

They asked Per to join as a fulltime member end of last year, but as far as I know he still hasn't given an answer.

the2stranger 02-20-2005 06:07 AM

^
:amaze: I didn't know that, but I would love it if Per joined.

the most piano parts and keyboards/mellatron parts are awesome.
and keys have always been invloved in Opeth, but their drummer used to do all that stuff
( I love silhouette)
but there are more songs with key underneath, It ook me a while before I even noticed.
listen to to bid you farewell, it's just very subtle sounds, but it adds a lot to te music.

but there are som many good key parts
a fair judgment
pattrns in the ivy
by the pain I see in others
the leper affinity
a lot of the dam'nation album
I just love the keypart on 'in my time of need' with the choir pad

The accoustic stuff and when he sings clean is awesome!!!

:upset::upset::upset:

Don't like it when he screams :( But I like the instrumental aspect of when its heavy. However it is equally matched by the softer stuff as well. Is his voice/style of singing an acquired taste?

Yeah, that's a pretty standard response. I found that once I researched and realized how much effort+technique goes into being able to do that with your voice (it's NOT just blind screaming), I developed alot more respect for it, and for some reason that transfered into me enjoying it. I dunno, musician's mind I suppose. But there is something to growling that gets...addicting. Opeth is often a good "gateway" band into death metal for alot of people.

In addition to that, I'm in love with the kinds of contrasts that it creates - "holy ****, THAT came out of the same guy?" It provides for an incredible range of moods and emotions; Opeth's music is very unique, sometimes I think that Mikael's growls are used to make up for the fact that the band does NOT simply resort to distorted power chords in order to make their songs heavy...they needed something like that in order to create further contrast and heaviness. Just my take. :)

One of the reasons I like Opeth as much as I do is because of Mikael's weird chords and time sigs and such. It really interests me as a guitarist :)

The first growling I heard was a sample of Blackwater Park from around 5:15, I heard the growling and I was like "This is ****ing cool!" and I ordered it later that day

The way I got passed the growls was by reading the lyrics. Its how they grew on me.I guess it helps when you know what he is actually saying. You'll be walking around chanting those lyrics in no time.Once you get into the growls, everything of theres comes easier and is an awesome first time listen.
