I usually get in player mode when I study someone, like when I was madly into Paul Gilbert, I would use figners 1,3,4 for nearly everything and pick everything. Now I'm in Alexi mode, I use what feels best and use the whammy bar all the time. I can't use fingers 1,2,4 like he does though, it feels uncomfortable so I will not try.

I actually can't be bothered with that song anymore, I have way too much stuff to practise, and I don't even practise that much as it is.
But of course, I look forward to hearing it if you record it.

Don't expect a recording any time very soon. If I do, it'll be a while. Plus I don't know how I'd record with the tone I use for it. It sounds great on the amp but recording would prolly it really muddy and just "steady noise". If you know what I mean? It would be 1/4 as deep/heavy as Sixpounder was, but it's steady and much faster, so that prolly wouldn't help my cause for recording. lol.

Speaking of using fingers, What are some good exercises to increase speed with my pinky? I do almost everything 3 fingered. I'm quite quick using my first 3 fingers, which doesn't exactly motivate me to work on using my pinky... I try to as much as I can though.
I've been working on bar cord sequences with my pointer and pinky fingers... As well as power cords and just trying to use it tons with random riffs from songs/parts of songs I know.

Any specific techniques or exercises you can reccomend?

repcak 03-07-2006 05:35 AM

i once found a great exercise and i play it every time as a warm up... it helped me a lot with my pinky!

12-9--------------8-11
------11-8--8-11-----
------------9-----------
-------------------------
-------------------------
-------------------------

make a run... until you reach the first fret and return... its a great exercise and you have to use your pinky!!

Last night in the annual Emma-Gaala (Finnish equivalent of the Grammys) Children Of Bodom were presented the Export Emma 2006 for their accomplishments in exporting Finnish music. The whole award ceremony was aired live on national TV.

In other news, the band recently shot a new promo video for the title song of their newest album "Are You Dead Yet?". The quintet ended their European tour in Tavastia, Helsinki on February 11th and returned the same club two days later to shoot the playing parts for the aforementioned video. The story parts of the video were shot beforehand in America.

New video soon :D "Are you Dead, Yet" :D

Lil’ Bloodred Ridin’ Hood 03-07-2006 10:48 AM

I read that a lil while ago,i wish i could see a video of it or something

MRDuCran 03-07-2006 12:06 PM

That diminished arpeggio is ok for little finger strength, but I know people like Alexi and Yngwie would play it with fingers 1 and 3.

Just do stuff like:

e-9-8--------------------------
b------9-8----------------------
g-----------9-8-----------------
d----------------9-8-------------
a---------------------9-8-------
e--------------------------9-8--

...obviously with fingers 3 and 4.

e-12-7---------------------------------
b-------12-7---------------------------
g-------------12-7---------------------
d-------------------12-7---------------
a-------------------------12-7---------
e--------------------------------12-7--

I'll try both yours and repcak's later.

I made more progress on the verse riff in LTTSS. It's much easier then I thought it would be, though parts are challenging.

Any tips for the string skipping?

3rd page????? How did this happen?

Who do you like better? Warmen or Sinergy? :thumb:

I like Sinergy better but both are great.

as far as string skipping goes, most people would give you :

1-4--------------------
-------1-4--------------
--1-4----------1-4------
-----------1-4----------
---------------------1-4
------------------------

and so on. I find working on the stretches the BIGGEST help. You need to focus on moving from any string, to any string. Im sure i could give more examples in the future

MRDuCran 03-08-2006 03:19 PM

It's fine to to work on stuff like that if you're after just general string skipping improvement, but for specific pieces/songs with a string skipping section in, there's nothing better than to just practise that dam part reapeatedly.

That's what I did yesterday with that verse part of the Nile song. I need to speed it up still some and get it more crisp. I'm making great progress though.

i would disagree with ya there. The BEST thing to do while having problems with a spot you find hard is

1: Find out WHY its hard (this situation, we'll say string skipping)
2: Separate both hands. Find out which is hand should/shouldnt be doing during that problem section
3: make up an example that takes the "diffculty" realm over the top.

What im saying is, if you have a problem with string skipping in a run/riff, try sometime 10 times harder for a few days. I guarentee when you go back to that riff/run, it will be easy as hell

MRDuCran 03-08-2006 04:15 PM

I understand. Knowing my short attention span, I'd probably go off on sometihng compelely different.

You certainly have the mind of JP.

LoL Whatever.

So I haven't been in a COB mood for the last couple weeks...that and my buddy had my cd's...so need less to say I ahven't really listened to any lately.

I'm gonna go learn something from AYDY

repcak 03-08-2006 04:41 PM

for string skipping i will recommend JP rock discipline... its one of the warm up exercises you can download for Guitar Pro

its something like that (i'm not sure)
--------------------5-9- (5)(and return)
---------------5--------
---------6-------6-----
----7-------7----------
-------7---------------
-5---------------------

start it with a downstroke, then repeat it with an upstroke (its more difficult).
you can do it with only one note, or a double-stroke
-5-5-

or with a third-stroke
-5-5-5-

and so on ...
