I hate Shortest Straw solo

\m/Pete\m/ 04-08-2005 10:25 AM

WHAT!?

meh to each their own.

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 10:25 AM

I cant remember it, but the solos in Orion knock me off my feet every time. They're easy solos, but they have a great deal of emotion

fatbandit 04-08-2005 10:29 AM

Especially the bass solo...

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 10:32 AM

Why the rolly eyes?

Shred Danson 04-08-2005 10:35 AM
lots to say bout metallica

1/ there old stuff(before they went to rehab) is much better than there new stuff

2/Fav song has to be master of puppets but i love bells and enter sand man too

3/(the bad ****!) metallica have become far too commercial for there own good and in many cases i whould rether to metallica as a buisness rather than a band and wots all this **** about them releaseing a video game......

4/Arrogant pricks to say the least espicially lars (c,mon man your not really very good!)

5/Dont get me wrong i love matallica but i feel they are losing there edge as far as good music goes and should probaly think about puttin the light out and goin home now before they lose to much respect i mean they just cant compete with the likes of Black label society and all these great bands like
children of bodom and arch enemy as well as masuga n,****

Oh well i am goin to get a grillin for this post but i like a good fight lol
 Whatta cunt.

metalcritter666 04-08-2005 10:42 AM
Just buy it MXican, its well worth the money.

I was listening to Shortest Straw the other day and the solos in that are probably where Kirk shows off his talent the best. Anyone else agree?
definately. shortest straw and blackened are the ones i can never nail properly......they sound awesome and are definately some of kirk's most intricate works.

fatbandit 04-08-2005 10:54 AM

Why rolly eyes? I really expect everyone to bypass the bass solo at 6:35 in Orion entirely and think the interlude solo is the only one...

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 11:02 AM

I was referring to all the solos

metalcritter666 04-08-2005 11:12 AM

the majority of the solos on load/reload are rubbish. :upset:

EDIT: because of this, i am going to change my avatar.

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 11:14 AM

I think James did some on those albums

fatbandit 04-08-2005 11:21 AM

I was pretty sure James didn't do any on Load/Reload

The one on No Leaf Clover is a but Rubbish if I remember rightly. And -Human.

\m/Pete\m/ 04-08-2005 11:22 AM
the majority of the solos on load/reload are rubbish. :upset:
I love the solo's for Bleeding Me and Fuel as well as 2x4

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 11:24 AM
I was pretty sure James didn't do any on Load/Reload

It said somewhere on the Metallica site on Kirk's profile he let James handle some of the lead work from Load/Re-load. I'll check it out, because i'm probably mistaken

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 11:28 AM

Aye, i was wrong. It said basically said Kirk started writing more riffs rather than solos: "...having started sharing 6-string duties with James during the 'Load' era"

Joe 04-08-2005 11:35 AM

i'm not really familiar with the load/reload era. i know fuel, unforgiven 2, and some other songs. i need to buy them

so james does some leads?

fatbandit 04-08-2005 11:42 AM

James does leads on MoP and Nothing Else Matters. I'm not sure what other songs he does leads on. He does joint lead on For Whom the Bell Tolls, and I think he might have a couple of other solos. Have to get a guitarist to come in to answer that one.

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 11:48 AM

He does some on Orion, and the little harmony thing on Blackened before Kirk's solo. Whiskey In The Jar he also plays all leads on

metalcritter666 04-08-2005 11:50 AM
James does leads on MoP and Nothing Else Matters. I'm not sure what other songs he does leads on. He does joint lead on For Whom the Bell Tolls, and I think he might have a couple of other solos. Have to get a guitarist to come in to answer that one.
he also plays part of the seek and destroy solo live. its like the 3rd phrase of the solo, but then kirk comes in and owns him. and the 2nd solo on TLITD.

Joe 04-08-2005 12:06 PM

thanks you guys, i know about james' leads on master of puppets and orion and etc

i was asking about load/reload because people above were talking abotu it

IAJP 04-08-2005 12:09 PM

He's a decent enough lead player.
Hammet still amazes me, the solos in disposable heroes=

Joe 04-08-2005 12:11 PM

yea he is. he's a lot better than some lead players out there, it's kinda funny.

Hammett's incredilbe. i like that solo but my fav is Fade to Black

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 12:12 PM

Cliff taught him a lot about theory(Hetfield that is)

Joe 04-08-2005 12:20 PM

yea i heard.

it's too bad... i'm a really good guitarist and yet know very little theory

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 12:28 PM

Well, i guess theory isnt everything. You dont have to know it, but its good too

IAJP 04-08-2005 12:30 PM

I know next to nothing, but I'm a good guitarist...heh :p

LarsAgi007 04-08-2005 12:31 PM
just a quick question for anyone who knows... the bit in the solo when kirk makes the guitar scream really high pitched. i know he does it by touchiong th estrings against the pickups on the album, but does anyone know how what he does for that bit when playing live? i think its artificial harmonics somewhere low on the neck, but cant work it out!
thanks!
You would get a better response in the guitar forum mate, As a drummer, i don't know much about guitars but on my guitar, if i play a string, then tap it over the pickups it makes a totally different sound (I think they are called ghost notes), It could be caused by the whammy bar.... Or possibly a harmonic somwhere on the fretboard... Hope i have helped
I think i know what you mean, but

who knows... the bit in the solo when kirk makes the guitar scream really high pitched

Doesnt really give clues as to which song, album ... ect:
Well, i guess theory isnt everything. You dont have to know it, but its good too
I am an awesome drummer and pretty good guitarist, i dont know much theory, I know how to read drum music/Tab, and Tabs for guitar, a little about harmonics, ect: But i find its the knowledge that is needed to write songs rather than play them.

Sandtrap 04-08-2005 12:40 PM
Hammett's incredilbe. i like that solo but my fav is Fade to Black
that might have more to do with the enitire song than the solo...I know what you mean though. he really makes the solo match the feel and energy of that song. LOVE IT! :smoke:

Jev 04-08-2005 12:41 PM

I would imagine it to be pinch harmonics on the 3rd fret of either the B or e string with a full bend.

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 12:42 PM

I was gonna learn the solo to Disposable Heroes, i didnt spend too much time on it and laziness overcame me

blue3 04-08-2005 12:43 PM

I haven't learned that song yet

Deth 04-08-2005 12:51 PM
I was gonna learn the solo to Disposable Heroes, i didnt spend too much time on it and laziness overcame me
Wow, you really are lazy.

/reference to conversation I hope you remember.
I was gonna learn the solo to Disposable Heroes, i didnt spend too much time on it and laziness overcame me
yeah, considering that is your username.

*also goes to learn disposable heroes solo*

Deth 04-08-2005 12:58 PM

I'm attempting to play the whole MOP album through on bass. I can get through Sanitarium now.

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 01:06 PM
Wow, you really are lazy.

Remember it i do

I've nearly got the first Orion solo down, piece 'o piss

IAJP 04-08-2005 01:34 PM

The last solo in Orion is the one I had/having trouble with.

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 01:36 PM

It doesnt look too bad actually from what i remember, though Disposable Heroes is gonna take a while

wrongnote85 04-08-2005 01:42 PM

get the official tab book. i picked up around jan. to learn the leads and have since made my own 4 track analog version of the complete album. anyway, the book can really help. check it.

DisposableHeroes 04-08-2005 01:46 PM

I tend to use powertab dude, its godly

Joe 04-08-2005 02:01 PM

yea but the official tab books are better. they've got every guitar part played, not just the lead. it's really good
