Riva 05-05-2006 01:27 AM

Haha. That's my dilemma!

Jim 05-05-2006 05:39 AM

Man I really dig Roger's voice. It's just got so much character. I tried to show my friends The Trial and they all said it was lame and stupid. :( Then they just put on Disturbed or something.

Some just can't be converted.

Riva 05-05-2006 06:25 AM

Lead them to me, and I shalt slay them with mine sword.

Jim 05-05-2006 06:45 AM

Better be some mighty sword! They is unconvertable they is! Not even the masterpiece of SOYCD would grab their attention! (although I think eight and a half minutes of instrumental before any actual lyrics may have been a bit of a steep learning curve for these members of generation NOW)

Meh, I find that a lot of teenager's wont even try to listen to Pink Floyd because they are 'old' and they don't think it would be cool to like stuff that their parent's do  . Or it has to have double bass in it just to be cool (Well, that's what I have discovered anyway ...).

I got a good friend of mine into Floyd about a year ago, of course he was saying how he would never like. So I played him Comfortably Numb, and then he bought The Wall the week after

Kreator2112 05-05-2006 09:46 AM

robo2448 05-05-2006 11:28 AM

From what I've encountered, most people claim to listen to Floyd because of they're cool, trendy, and have that "stoner" image. A lot of people like this either listen to them only while stoned or don't listen to them at all. And then you've got all the ABITWPt.2 fanboys who don't know any other songs. But yeah, very few people are actually big fans. And I'm still looking for someone who knows who Syd Barrett is.

I actually got one of my friends to get The Wall. But he refuses to get any others. He doesn't "believe" in studio albums. Seriously, whenever I look at his ipod everything on there is a compilation except The Wall and 2 Traffic cds I burned for him.

LF96 05-05-2006 01:12 PM

I hate how ABITW(2) is always seen as anti-education. I don't think it was meant like that at all. It's more anti corrupt teachers or something as I see it. And yet, I always hear people namedropping that song in a same way as people say fuck school. I saw this badge in London around a week ago or so, and it said something like 'fuck school' written in the The Wall font on a background of a white wall...

...Que?

Nice name change, Riva

The Trial and SOYCD definitely aren't good songs to get people into Pink Floyd. The Trial is just too strange and SOYCD is too drawn out for those used to the "single" format (3-4 minutes tops, a two-line intro, lyrics, maybe a crappy solo, plenty of choruses, etc.). I'd go with WYWH, Pigs On The Wing, Fearless, etc. first, then let them buy a CD (or burn them one) and tell them to listen all the way through :)

No exaggeration there whatsoever. If you want to drive a little ways to Rocky Mount I can lend it to you ;)

It's seriously my favorite album of all time.
Awsome. Its where my mom grew up :)

BigTrav415 05-05-2006 06:04 PM

Cool. Do you know where she went to school? It was just be wierdly cool if she went to Rocky Mount Academy, as that's where I am and where my mom went (aka: they might have known each other; wierdness!)

Yeah, I've burnt Pink Floyd CDs for people. I think I saved the playlist somewhere. Hang on and I might dig it up.

Also, that paint job is gold. :p

Yeah, that's what I hate as well. It's not anti education, it's about how restrictive the system is. It's anti facism and anti conformity.

Danger Bird 05-06-2006 10:09 PM
Yeah, that's what I hate as well. It's not anti education, it's about how restrictive the system is. It's anti facism and anti conformity.
I definately agree with you, but I'm still really tempted to play it at the school talent show with the band I'm in.

Riva 05-07-2006 03:54 AM

Well, it's a crowd pleaser. That's why it's so popular. Apparently, Roger didn't want that really heavy bass beat, but the producer (Ezrin perhaps?) wanted Nick to put it in. And it may be why it's so "danceable".

BigTrav415 05-07-2006 02:47 PM

I dare someone to try dancing to ABitW pt. II. It's like The Crunge by Led Zeppelin; it sounds like you can totally groove to it, but as soon as you try to, you realize you can't ge tthe rythym down and you look like an idiot

Dragon_Prince 05-07-2006 03:40 PM

You are an idiot if you can't get the simply rhytm of ABITW pt 2 down ;)

Riva 05-07-2006 04:58 PM

It's probably just because you suck at dancing, Trav. :-*

BigTrav415 05-07-2006 06:54 PM

 I'm just kidding, I was seeing if anyone was actually reading my post. Sometimes it doesn't seem like it :( I've never had an occasion to dance to ABitW anyway, so yeah, I was just blathering. I'm not really a dancer, since most of the music I listen to isn't techno-trance shizz or w/e. Plus ballroom-style dancing is stupid as hell. I don't care if it gets chicks, there are less humiliating ways. I'll do it, but not willingly.

np: AbitW pt. II (I'm resisting dancing... must... resist...)

MidnightRider 05-07-2006 08:15 PM

Earlier I picked up Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey by Nicholas Schaffner. It looks really good.
Yeah, that's what I hate as well. It's not anti education, it's about how restrictive the system is. It's anti facism and anti conformity.
I agree, but you can't expect the average listener to think of it that way. My little brother likes that song just because he gets a kick out of singing along with "We don't need no education."

Riva 05-07-2006 11:12 PM

I kind of bop in the I-can't-dance-cos-I'm-white way.

Danger Bird 05-08-2006 12:08 AM

I got OBC from the library, haven't listened to it.

Riva 05-08-2006 03:10 AM

You'll absolutely fall in love with it.

rippa32 05-08-2006 05:06 AM

I think Animals is the most beautiful piece of music Pink Floyd has produced. But then again my Floyd collection is kinda small. I have Meddle, DSOTM, Animals and WYWH. Any suggestions for the next?

Riva 05-08-2006 05:10 AM

Obscured By Clouds, More, The Wall and Saucerful Of Secrets are my recommendations. Probably go for The Wall, and you'll have all of their really famous ones.

Danger Bird 05-08-2006 08:14 AM

Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

666Ozzfan 05-08-2006 06:46 PM

I'm really enjoying A Momentary Lapse of Reason right now.

Oooh! radio station playing a full live concert (Delicate Sound of Thunder tour, however not sure where). *boogies, singing "and if you're taking your girlfriend out tonight you better run"*

Riva 05-08-2006 06:51 PM
Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
If he likes Animals the most, he might not like PATGOD.

If you want something somewhat similar to what you already have, go with The Wall or Obscurred By Clouds. If you feel like exploring the boundaries of Floyd, go with Piper at The Gates of Dawn.
You'll absolutely fall in love with it.
It happens to all of us. I think it's definitely Floyd's most underrated album.

Riva 05-08-2006 07:00 PM

That picture of Gilmour in your avatar looks a lot like Mike Oldfield in his '70s years.

BigTrav415 05-09-2006 06:48 PM

I love Midnight's Gilmour avvy, he looks so proud of his mullet and stubble beard  Mullets rule.

OBC is definitely one of my favorite Floyd albums. Everything about it is great except maybe for Absolutely Curtains, just because it's mostly a long drawn out lead-in to a non-existant climax. But other than that everything else is incredible.

Atomic Rain 05-10-2006 09:53 AM

Who agrees that cutting off his beard was the worst decision Rick Wright ever made?

I can never get over how unbelieveably cool he looks in LAP.

He looks so fly on the Meddle picture with the shaggy mane. I can't even imagine wanting to cut off that hair. Then again I think beards and long hair in general are awesome, I plan to grow hippy hair and a beard as soon as my parents let me
Quovadis Is The Top
...Huh?

Riva 05-10-2006 04:37 PM

I've got a desktop background of the guys in the '70s, and Rick looks like the shaggiest of the lot.

robo2448 05-10-2006 05:20 PM

<---- Shaggy Rick!

Let's talk about how awesome Echoes is.

Riva 05-10-2006 05:48 PM

Almost as good as The Gold It's In The...

MidnightRider 05-10-2006 07:04 PM

I think my favorite part about Echoes is the lyrics, they never fail to amaze me. Especially in the second section, I just love how it ends with..."And so I throw the windows wide and call to you across the sky."

The Gold It's In The... is a really cool song, I'm listening to it right now. Great solo. The whole song doesn't really sound like Floyd at all but it's great.
