Threshold, Superior, Overhead, Camel and Rush.

Don't know if you know any of those but they are all good groups.

Dream Theater5150 04-20-2005 04:51 PM

Thanks, can you describe the bands before I give them a listen, and I know Rush I am not that far off.

3rdplanet 04-20-2005 05:05 PM

Well as you know Rush are Rush.

My friend sent me some Superior so I have no albums by them yet, but from what I have heard they sit of the gap between Power and Prog metal, 'Why' by them has the most beautiful piano I have heard.

Threshold are much more metal. Lot's of Synth.

The Overhead are more ambient moments if that's your sort of thing, if you like Porcupine Tree you maybe a fan.

Camel have quite a bizarre sound, hard to describe, but I'm sure prog archives will help, they have a few free downloads on their site.

Those last two don't have much of a metal sound to them, but they are still worth listening to if you do like Rush.

Other names to look out for are;

Ayeron
Fate's Warning
Liquid Tension Experiment
Yes
Without Face

...and many many more, I could probably go on all day about it.

But I'm not going to as I need to sleep.

Dream Theater5150 04-20-2005 05:14 PM

Haha thanks for not being an *** like that Lamb of God purist....

can anyone point to a song that has a cool violin or violin friendly part? i need it for orchestra auditions, a piece that would require shifting would help a lot.

What is "shifting" may I ask?

Also are you looking for songs that you can transcribe your self by ear, or songs that have sheet music already made for them? Because my suggestions most likely will not have sheet music for them.

Also some rock and metal songs with Violins in them :

Arcturus - Ad Astra

Winds - Theory Of Relativity, What is Beauty, The Fireworks of Genesis, A Moment for Reflection...(or pretty much any Winds songs, since they have alot of violin/piano work in their songs)

Sinergy - Born Unto Fire and Passion (great insturmental piece, I highly recommend it. Violin and classical guitar are the biggest pieces to this song)

Haggard - Requiem in D - Minor, Cantus Firmus In A-Minor, Saltorella La Manuelina, Gavotta In Si-Minore...(those are all great insturmentals done by the band. They are really a metal band fused with classical elements, and have around 20 people in the band, but those are their straight up classical insturmentals with good violin work in them)

If you like Prog/power, or whatever the hell metal with a clean voice,

DEFINATLY, I really mean it, Check out Symphony X, AMAZING music.

I would also have to recomend anything by Tool.

For Death metal fans,

Something really different and very open --- > Augury, I can't quite describe augury, but I can tell you its amazing. And is definatly worth checking out, you can download some songs at augurymetal.com I believe.

Quo Vadis also does some decent work.

As for black metal, Blinded by faith is pretty good.

You might like The Chasm. Grab their "Deathcult For Eternity" album. And if you like that, then Cenotaph, Demigod, and Miasma.

jmoney 04-23-2005 11:30 AM

I have no ROLLING STONES albums. I need some. I know Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, and Some Girls are good, but what should i get. My favorite song of theirs is Brown Sugar.
I'd like to know what some experimental/trippy bands are. And I'd like to stay away from the more popular ones, plz.
The Bad Plus and Medeski Martin and Wood.

Both Fusion/Post-Bop type bands, but they're extremely creative and experimental, especially MMW. They may be difficult to find, but if you come across them, consider them

I have many. If you were interested in me sending them to you, I'd have to do it tomorrow, when I have more time
