I understand that it's completely subjective, but how the hell can you consider Animals to be one of their worst albums?
I'm not a huge fan of Animals either. It's a great album, but relatively one of the weaker Floyd releases, personally. I just find it a bit repetitive and musically uninspired. Although some of the solos are very awesome.

I personally think it's their best.
From pinkfloydonline.com

Nick Mason: "This was a bit of a return to the group feel, quite a
cheerful session as I remember. We did it in our own studio, which we'd
just built. By now Roger was in full flow with the ideas, but he
was also really keeping Dave down, and frustrating him deliberately."

Rick Wright: "I didn't like a lot of the writing on Animals, but
unfortunately I didn't have anything to offer. I think I played well
but I remember feeling not very happy or creative, partly because of
problems with my marriage. This was the beginning of my writer's
block."

David Gilmour: "On Animals I was the prime musical force. Roger was the
motivator and lyric writer."

Interesting, wot?
Yeah, it really is. Still, Animals is one of my favorite albums ever. Oh, and you should says "Interesting, eh wot?" like the owl dude in Animal Crossing :p

Nosferatu 03-06-2006 04:04 PM

animals is probably my favorite floyd album, followed by dark side and meddle

Bah, I think DSotM is easily PF's most overrated album, I dont think it is that creative, par a few songs. The wall though I think that is genius, I love concept albums, but overall I think that PatGoD is brilliant too.

If you love concept albums, why do you hate Dark Side of the Moon?

Deconstruction 03-06-2006 04:20 PM
If you love concept albums, why do you hate Dark Side of the Moon?
Because I think it is a weak concept album. I think that their are other concept albums that are tied together much better, song to song wise. And I never said I hate it. I just think it is a concept about a concept that is too broad.

I find the wall musically cripplingly bland and lyrically weaker than most people make out.

There are a couple of so-so songs cowritten by Gilmour but the rest just merge into a big long nothing for me.

Lucky Thirteen 03-06-2006 04:49 PM

All haters ...

Get the *uck out!!! Seriously, no Pink Floyd fan cares what songs or albums you don't like.

I'd like to know why "More" was left off the first post.
Green is the Colour is too beautiful.
What about Tonight Let's All Make Love In London
Nick's Boogie? Interstellar Overdrive full length?

Oh well.

Working brain cells indicate that I was linking to reviews, ergo More had no review at the time.

Green is the Colour isn't as good as Cymbaline, I think. Although Cymbaline was one of Roger's early songs about hating war.

BigTrav415 03-06-2006 05:09 PM

I saw Nick's Boogie on what looked like an illegal bootleg in a random CD rack in an Eckerd Drug one time. It was called "Pink Floyd and Friends", and but only had Interstellar Overdrive and Nick's Boogie, otherwise it was random songs like "Edge Of Seventeen" by Fleetwood Mac. The cover art was pretty cool though, it was a pic of the old Floyd around a tree or something. I should've bought it just for the novelty.

I can't believe I've never mentioned that I found that.

Lucky Thirteen 03-06-2006 05:31 PM

Yes

I just found a 1991 French label See For Miles Records TLAMLIL promotional album sampler containing the 17m Interstellar Overdrive and the 12m Nick's Boogie. It's got a cool picture of Roger & Rick on the front. In the sleeve it says that these are the first known recordings by the group before they signed with EMI (of course with Syd at the time).

I love the tunes, especially IO.

Big Trav: yes, you should have bought it.

HeavyRiva: my misunderstanding, I'm the idiot. Nevertheless I'm sure there's a review of More by now. Get to it. :thumb:

I think I saw that same cd in Pathmark (grocery store) once. I was shocked. But I didn't have any money. I should go back there and see if they still have it.

Lucky Thirteen 03-06-2006 06:20 PM

Hey! I'm standing right here, I can hear you ...

Did you notice the little winky thumbs up icon to the right?
Anyhow, I could care less if he updates his topic about the most important band in history. That was semi-sarcastic just so that's clear.

pigonthewing82 03-06-2006 06:36 PM

I saw the Pink Floyd tribute band, the Machine, over the weekend, they were really good. They did a bunch of songs I didn't excpet, but was really glad to hear. The songs I remember they did were Breathe, Time, Sorrow, a song from the Final Cut, In the Flesh, The Thin Ice, Another Brick in the Wall 1,2, and 3, Arnold Layne (with a great jam), Dogs, Wish You Were Here, Echoes, Fearless, One Two Three For, and Have a Cigar. The lead vocalist and guitarist was really good. He was able to do both Water's and Gilmour's voice great.

Oh, ok I will listen to you as, you have been here so long, even the entire forum so long. I was answering a question about why I think DSotM is overrated. This is for all PF discussion even if you dont like it.

Ok thanks, it is my opinion and just because I think an albums is over rated (never did I say it was bad) is my OPINION! If you are going to be a fact/opinion nazi please humbly escort yourself out. If not then continue on with discussion.

Alright, I just dont like the concept of that album, thanks.

Lucky Thirteen 03-06-2006 07:38 PM

DSoTM is an album about the concept of LIFE! Too broad for you? Not me.

Leave.

Only Pink Floyd albums I have are The Wall. I've heard a couple off Dark Side Of The Moon. I love the song Welcome To The Machine.

What should I check out next?

Do you want spacey, phsycadelia or more progy, the later albums are more like prog albums and earlier are spacey type stuff. Just goodle Pink Floyd's Discography and look at the earlier vs later. I would get one of each, maybe Wish you Were Here.

Dude he doesn't like Dark Side of the Moon that much get over it. I'm the same way, while I feel it is a great album and there are some points in it that are very impressive, I feel this album is weaker compared to others. First of all the songs are very short for Pink Floyd, on most albums they try to have at least one really long jam but not on this one. Personally I only listen to my bootleg of it live because the songs have more jamming on them. Also Animals and the Wall are MUCH stronger concept albums than DSOTM. I have always found it a mystery why this is their best selling album compared to their others.

And for the record Dave has said that he always felt his writting on that album was "too lazy" even the band members feel that it isn't their strongest album.

:p Yeah man you gotta try to see them, they were really not what I expected at all out of a tribute band.

You know I'm listening to OBC right now and I think its taken over as my favorite Floyd album. That album never fails to impress me.

Lucky Thirteen 03-06-2006 08:37 PM

I love Pink Floyd. I love life. I love Meddle. DSoTM was important.

I totally apologize for defending DSoTM in a Pink Floyd thread. What was I thinking?
