guns_of_brixton 03-22-2005 05:35 PM

A few months ago I was listening to Clampdown and at the end of the song, right as it fades out, somebody screams out "Who's barmy now?" It scared the crap out of me.

TheNowhereman42 03-22-2005 05:42 PM

its one of my favorite song.but i dont even know what clampdown means...there's no translation for it..so can someone explain what the word means in other words...please? :upset:

guns_of_brixton 03-22-2005 05:53 PM

"Clampdown" is kind of a British thing I guess. I've never really heard it here in America. I think it means a repressive government or like a restriction or law against something.

Forest_Fire 03-22-2005 05:56 PM

Sounds about right

I don't think british people say clampdown either, least i've never heard it over on the jolly olde island

Coma_Girl 03-22-2005 06:49 PM

it must be some gay hitler-related organization or something like that.

CombatRock 03-22-2005 08:32 PM

i always though clampdown was a system of government who forces you to do somthing..and makes you change how you think and your way of life..but im probley wrong

Coma_Girl 03-22-2005 08:35 PM

Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?
'Cause they're working for the clampdown
They put up a poster saying we earn more than you!
When we're working for the clampdown
We will teach our twisted speech
To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers

it leaves me thinking it has something to do with nazis.but i may be wrong as well cause i'm not good in history and stuff like that

No, thats actually pretty much what it is.

guns_of_brixton 03-22-2005 09:47 PM

The line "Kick over the wall, cause government's to fall" is kind of weird because it almost predicted the fall of the Berlin wall about 7 years later.

CombatRock 03-22-2005 10:07 PM

ooooommmmmmmmmmg "kick over the wall cos governments to fall how can you refuse it?"..is my fav lyrics line in the world its sooo great..andy gave me the translation in french it was my msn name for soem time but not anymore

White Riot! 03-22-2005 10:44 PM

I love that bit in Revolution Rock where its goes "El-Clash Combo....... Weddings..Parties...Anything and bongo jams a speciality!" and the bongos are playing almost solo.

I love that song it goes on forever

CombatRock 03-22-2005 10:51 PM

White Riot! 03-23-2005 12:25 AM

its around 5:10

guns_of_brixton 03-23-2005 07:05 AM

And then it starts talking about mobsters at the end.

White Riot! 03-23-2005 07:08 AM

I really love the little subtleties in the clash's music , you just dont get that in most music anymore

guns_of_brixton 03-23-2005 07:11 AM

Thats so true, in almost every song theres just a few words that you sometimes catch.

Its weird how at the beginning of Jimmy Jazz it sounds like there are people talking.

Coma_Girl 03-23-2005 04:42 PM

maybe its because there's people who are talking for real...or maybe its in your head.

I love how Joe sounds like he's reading a story in some parts of this song.

It might be in my head ;). And I'm still looking for Guy Stevens screaming when the chairs fell on him which Topper said is on London Calling.

Coma_Girl 03-23-2005 05:15 PM

i think topper said you can ear it when they recorded, but they must have took another take...
