o ok, cool cool. so anyone know the main reason mike decided to change his gear? i quite liked that beastly mesa/ prs setup.
I remember reading an interview in which he said somehting like, "I had just gotten really comfortable with one sound and stopped trying other things. I finally decided that it was time for a change." I'm paraphrasing of course, but from what he said I get the idea he just wanted to try something new and he apparently liked it enough to stick with it. |
yeah i can definetly understand that, but man he relly knew how to get some tone out of a mesa.
|
yeah i can definetly understand that, but man he relly knew how to get some tone out of a mesa.
Yeah, he also knows how to get a good tone out of his new rig; even though it took him forever to get it right live (I have so many recordings of them live where his tone leaves a lot to be desired). |
yeah, like in certain parts of the live performances its just like " arg, mike what are you doing!. not so much anymore, but some.

As far as his new material goes, he's got it right. But some songs - like (to me) Green - are suffering with the new equipment. They sound thin. Don't get me wrong, I would kill for a Jazzmaster, but that thing just can't compete in terms of thickness with a PRS/Mesa setup. |

123. I think Vitamin sounds really "thin" with the jazzmaster. |
i heard a live version of SSLW that sounded "thin" haha...i think it was the live in Japan version

YES YES YES , thats exactly what i was talking about. old stuff like that, green, vitamin, and songs with that awesome reco distortion, they just sound too different with the new set up. |
i think thats part of the reason his guitar wasnt well heard in Alive at Red Rocks...i mean i have Surround Sound and it still doesnt sound as good as it could

Well as Skyler is always saying; the volume of the instruments on that DVD is a lot lower than it should be. |
yeah thats definetly true, and lol he did rant about that quite frequently. but you know what would be awesome? i think that if mike ran his jazzmaster thru his old setup, that would be nice. really nice. and kenney used dirks rig, because in my opinion, dirk used waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better gear than kenney.
|
Mike used to use his tremoverb with the jazzmaster. I know of him using it on the lollapalooza tour and I have a video from Italy in Jan '04 where he's using one. His distortion was really grainy and didn't sound very good. I think he should just switch to a PRS for some of the old songs instead of just sticking with the jazzmasters for pretty much everything.

dirks set up was incredible! i have a guitar geek pic of his rig

i liked Bens bass sound..its kind like mine
|
Dirk's rig was massive too. He said people always make fun of how massive it is but when they hear his tone shut their mouths.
And I have recordings in which Mike used the Mesa with his Jazzmaster and it sounded terrible. |

Yes, one of the reasons I despise that DVD. |
I really didn't like the last tour much at all. I read in an interview with Brandon that on their next tour they're going to try out a "heavier concept". I think their going to get more into all the jamming and have some cool stage props and lighting and other stuff.
|
i think that the morning view tour was the coolest. man i wish i would have went to that.
|
If they could bring the vibe and atmosphere present on the Morning View DVD to a full sized concert, that would be incredible. I love the lighting and laid back feel the stage props and circular setup created. That combined with odessey-ish music would be so awesome to see.

123.
I would like to add my 2c for the Ben/Dirk debate: Dirk's sound was awesome, he must have tweaked it so much to get it where it was. He was also one funky motherfucker. That said, he didn't get along with the band so now he's out. Now Incubus have a new bassist who is skilled as well. As bands have to evolve over time to stay relevant, so you sometimes need to switch members. Ben has a kickass sound and style of his own, and whether or not he's better than Dirk is irrelevant: point is, he's now bringing his own influence to the band's sound. And he's a rippin' backup singer as well. \m/ |
true true.
but man, if they could bring the mv vibe to a concert like hat said, i would pay so much money to see that, i would sell my house! lol. but they probably wont :(. i think that they will pobably have more little jam sessions like on the red rocks dvd, and stuff like that. but im sure they will come up with an awesome set. |
I'd love to see an Incubus jam set - to hear everyone, even Brandon on vocals, improvising. I swear they could do a 45 min jam if they wanted to.
I'd pawn my little brother to see that. |
i'd give an arm but...after the show so i can clap at how awesome that would be...im sure it'd last longer then 45 minutes though
|

I couldn't agree more. |
Oh and I would like to add to the discussion Einziger's gear by reminding everyone that he sometimes uses that green Telecaster with a humbucker in the neck. It's no PRS, but the humbucker adds a bit of a heavier sound.
|
really, didnt know that * bows down before martyr's einziger knowledge *
i saw him using a regular strat in the make a move video tho. |

i saw him using a regular strat in the make a move video tho.
I don't think he uses strats much but I do recall him recording Stellar with a '70s Stratocaster. The Telecaster appears to be his downtuned guitar because he's only used on a few songs. /Einziger nerd. |
Yep, the Telecaster is his downtuned guitar. He uses it on Agoraphobia primarily. He has 2 though, the one you described and a carmel colored one with a maple fretboard and the word "fucker" on the headstock where the Fender logo would normally be.
The Strat he used in Make a Move was the Fender 50th Anniversary Gold Strat because the gold finish matched the whole desert theme in the video. |
