Yeah.

No Tornado or Rust in Peace? Those two and the ones you said are the greatest, the others are all good songs that kind of complete the album.

Chu 02-07-2005 01:27 PM

Rust in Peace is an amazing album, imo.
I love Take No Prisoners, just the intro riff. Speed metal at its finest indeed.
There's not one song on the album I can't listen to. Except maybe for that stupid My Creation song, I don't like that, has a nice intro riff though...

vashts80 02-07-2005 04:22 PM

Does James play with a pick? I can't tell from the Philly bootleg :\

Edit: And IMO...

For a more thrashy album, get KIMB, PSBWB or RiP...for a fast album, TSHF or SFSGSW (IMO)...for a more experimental album, get Youth or Cryptic, and if you want a more rock type album, Risk.

Hidden Treasures is awesome as well...Rude Awakening is good, kind-of like a live best-of, except Dave's voice is messed...it's pretty high on most songs

The System Has Failed is definitely not a "fast" album. Its got some thrashy songs, but most are in the style on Countdown and Youthanasia. I pretty much disagree with you totally here. For thrashy albums... get any of the first four. For some good heavy metal with some thrash elements, get any of the others. And don't get Risk.

And yeah, Dave sings higher live, and sometimes he cracks. I like it though.

For the most part I like Dave's voice, but sometimes live, at least on the recent live bootleg I have, he sings a little too high for my liking. I think a lot of it might be how complex and fast lots of the riffs he is playing are. It's really hard (for me at least) to sing and play at the same time. Especially Megadeth songs.

Yeah, true. If you ask me, Dave can sing however he wants, the music is still awesome.

Couldn't agree more. Some people hate his singing, I like it, but I would listen even if I thought it was just ok.

ArcLite 02-07-2005 09:54 PM

I wouldn't begin to call him a talented singer. However, I happen to like it with his songs...I guess for some reason its just part of what I like about Megadeth. It just wouldn't be Megadeth without Dave's crap singing.

MAthiAS 02-07-2005 09:56 PM

Its not really crap singing, Dave's just got a kind of weird voice. It wouldn't suit any other band but Megadeth.

123. It fits Megadeth perfectly though, imo.

This is true, but I have noticed numerous times on pretty much every album where he fails to hit a note or is sharp or flat etc. His singing makes the band, but I wouldn't call it good.

vashts80 02-08-2005 12:25 AM

Does anybody know where James plays with a pick? :x

I know that Ellefson played with fingers but then switched to a pick around Youth or Cryptic (or maybe it was RiP, can't remember), but I dunno about James. :\

Reidie86 02-08-2005 12:57 AM

james played with fingers, but had to take up using a pick 4 songs like holywars etc.
ellefson played with a pick while he played for megadeth, but before that he was a finger picker

I think his vocal sound is cool.
Initially I think it's what put me off Megadeth for a while, but I just loved the music I didn't care for his vocals.
Now however, I think his voice is awesome, definately not going to be a duplicate of him :p
I think his voice adds a catchiness to the vocals, I always find myself humming Megadeth lyrics to myself.. Especially "I spread disease like a dog, discharge my payloooooooadd!!"

Lord Abortion 02-08-2005 06:50 AM

Dave sings brilliantly IMO
that vocal sound takes some getting used to but it sounds great
listen to sweating bullets for proof of this

Yeah I know. Dave's vocals really have to grow on you, especially songs like Sweating Bullets. Kind of like how CoB's vocals have to grow on you.

Lord Abortion 02-08-2005 03:27 PM

it's like that for alot of bands
slayer, cradle of filth, cannibal corpse...

Yeah... we really need a new topic in this thread.

So... favorite Poland solo? Marty? Al?

Lord Abortion 02-08-2005 03:41 PM

meh I don't know much about guitaristry my fave solos are poland ones
the way they do the drum / guitar solo thing on hangar 18 is great (at end)
just learned that on my drums...

jaymz_is_god 02-08-2005 03:46 PM

I love the Holy Wars solo.

MoX_KIll 02-08-2005 06:45 PM

best song IMO is 99 ways to die or Wake up dead

MAthiAS 02-08-2005 07:25 PM
I love the Holy Wars solo.
There's um, 4 solos in that song.

Holy Wars is definitely my favorite Dave solo, and Marty's clean one is awesome too. Marty's solos are best in Five Magics and Tornado of Souls though.

Peace Sells is a good album, Rust in Peace is their best, Killing is my Business is their thrashiest and also very good, Countdown to Extinction is great, but with less of the emphasis on thrash/speed and more just good heavy metal. I'd recamend those first, if you like those, then check out So Far So Good So What if you like the thrashy ones, and Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, and The System Has Failed if you prefer their more straight metal stuff.
