Whatever you say, Jason. :) |
yo, I've just gotten into Opeth. I have BWP and Orchid and both are in my top 5 albums of all time. Question: do the albums morningrise and still life have the vocals of Orchid or BWP? Which should I get next?

death metal low growling, it;s awesome and great clean vocals too :)
yo, I've just gotten into Opeth. I have BWP and Orchid and both are in my top 5 albums of all time. sounds like morningrise then. I like the orchid vocals more, but I like everything else about BWP more (structure, riffs, acoustic sections, etc.) :thumb:
I agree whole-heartedly. And to clayman, Morningrise is excellent, believe me: I love that album too. I am not a fan of the production, the drummer, or the vocals. The entire reason to get it for me is for the heavenly guitar and basswork. I love the album a ton even so. But Still Life I just can't praise enough.
C'mon ripper, you and I both know that Anders Nordin > Martin Mendez. IMO his drumming is the best part of early Opeth. |
I prefer Mendez to Nordin by far. He's much more versatile and creative.

I do like Anders Nordin's drummer but the only percussion instrument hes better than Lopez at is piano. p.s speaking of ander's piano playing, i can play the first three pages of silhouette, almost to perfection now. I need the other pages though. |

Martin Mendez is the current bass player. You're thinking of Martin Lopez, who is their current drummer. And c'mon, the drumming on Deliverance is just so great. It pwns any drumming on Morningrise, and besides the production is all off on that album: the snares sound like friggin' gongs with all the reverb put on them, yet the bass drums sound like pillows being smacked. Not cool. |
i wudnt say it was that bad, but true it is no deliverance
|
The beat at around the 10:00 mark in Deliverance just shows Lopez pwns.
|
are the songs on d*mnation as good as harvest? Cause that song is awesome.

does anyone else find opeth songs incredibly hard to play... i find the stuff too technical for me to play...
that guy is such a great guitar player, ive been working on the "black rose immortal" solo, the one around 16 min., man its crazy. im just starting on solos, so its insane for me |
The Amen Corner doesn't do much for me, neither does Karma.
From Still Life, theres a few patches I think fall below their high standards, and The Funeral Portrait is another that doesn't have that mindblowing goodness songs like When, April Ethereal, Drapery Falls have.
Ugh...not at all, I love that song! And Still Life's probably my favorite album. :( Ah, well...different strokes.
C'mon ripper, you and I both know that Anders Nordin > Martin Mendez. Lopez easily blows away Nordin...much smoother groove, a great deal more diverse, and he's got incredible chops when he chooses to use them. |
A bit of topic, but what does everyone think of Camel. I know Mikael often mentions that he likes them and they have influinced him a lot. I bought Mirage today but haven't had tme to listen to it yet.

There are some tricky parts, but most of the time it is pretty easy. Sometimes you just have to be patient and play it slowly to understand the weird rhytms he's using. Of course it also depends on your guitar skill level. |

Of course it also depends on your guitar skill level.
I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now, and im not anywhere near the skill level i should be at. i mean im not bad, im just not that great on the electric guitar. im MUCH better at playing/writing acoustic stuff. but im trying to get started on solo's, so yeah. i tryed learning deliverance, i can play most of the parts right. just some of the little riffs he throws in ther sometime are complicated for me. but im practicing at it, so ill get it eventually. i JUST got down the riff in leper affinity around 2:15. it was sort of hard for me to play that up to speed. |
I have Deliverance and Blackwater Park. Both amazing.

April Ethereal
Wow this thread is growing :D
I have noticed a strange noise in the song April Ethereal for some time...It's right at around 1:46...It's like a high pitched noise. And you can hear some a few seconds before 1:46 also. Do you guys hear that too? .....Very eerie. |

I care. I just wanted to know if it was a defect in the MP3 download. But it does sound like it has purpose. What kind of intrument is that? I think he strummed the strings at the neck. :thumb: |
sorry, I can't help you with that, I'm no guitar man
but atleast it's no fault in your mp3 coulnd't it be a E-bow I've read something about t a bit ago, and that device can make a hellof alot of weird sounds, out of a common guitar cheers ps> welcome back. haven't seen you on in a hile, were you the person who was busy recording Opeth? or am I wrong? |
