It takes about 10 seconds to open it up and look at it to see if there are any loose/broken connections. If you see any and want to try to touch it up, break out the soldering iron and flux, and have at it.

If you don't want to work on it, take it somewhere. Pinpointing the exact problem will only aid the tech in finding the problem area and he might even be willing to just re-solder that wire for you on the spot for little to no charge. It's a passive bass, so you don't risk any permanent damage by soldering to an incorrect point.
What is the biggest Hello Kitty you can purchase there?

Let's all muck in and guess, winner is closest without going over, the biggest one Ryan finds is considered the official figure.

I'll wager there's a ten foot one in a shop somewhere.
Nah, I bet it's only 2 meters, tops.

And if I win, the bass forum pitches in, PayPal's Ryan the money, and he can buy and ship it to me. :)

gaslight 01-18-2011 07:43 AM

I'm not paying shipping for a fucking ten foot high cat .

FunkMetalBass 01-18-2011 12:00 PM

Coheed & Cambria are coming back through on May 9th. Joel will be pleased to know that it's a Second Stage Turbine Blade neverender tour where they'll be playing the entire album and then a few bonus acoustic songs as well.

Yay-yuh. I got tickets.

Convectuoso 01-18-2011 12:56 PM

Oh good they're playing an album that was actually listenable. lol :p

The Transporter 01-18-2011 04:03 PM

all of coheed's albums are good so I don't know why you say they aren't listenable

i am going to the show in KC. u jelly?

funkyhoney 01-18-2011 07:06 PM

i haven't seen that many hello kitty toys actually...

I'll keep an eye out.

So, i went to a shot bar last night, met some american businessmen. Had 15 different shots to earn myself a tshirt and a plaque on the wall. I declared myself as the winner of the contest as david ran down the stairs, left his passport and camera behind and marshall passed out on a toilet. The cleanup was disasterous as i was plastered and the kiwi bartender was losing patience even though she said she felt sorry for me.

Okay so Coheed to me are the only band who got worse in a linear fashion.

I mean most bands go from a good album to a really shit one.

These guys wrote a classic, then In Keeping Secrets which was still amazing, but to me personally didn't have the charm of SSTB. And then first good apollo one, which was solid, but the songs just weren't as cool IMO. Then Good Apollo 2 had like 2 good songs and the rest was crap.

Then there was the last album they released which was just awful. There was absolutely no song content in the entire album. It's like they got bogged down in using crazy esoteric noises and shit that they forgot to actually write a song.

YMMV.

I find their older stuff to be much more punk-y with Claudio focusing more on his lyrics than the melody. I think Keeping Secrets and Good Apollo 1 were better polished and the band focused a bit more on the music.

With few exceptions, I listen to heavier, melodic music, and so that's why those two albums stick out to me a bit more than SSTB.

The Transporter 01-19-2011 01:28 PM

good thing you added the YMMV cuz what you said is pretty wrong

Convectuoso 01-20-2011 12:25 PM

I mean honestly The Running Free was the biggest crap fest I ever come from Claudio.

The chorus (well the whole song) of The Hound (of blood and rank) just kinda makes me gag.

Mother Superior is epic.

But just IMO it was from here on in it just went majorly downhill.

The Transporter 01-20-2011 01:17 PM

The Running Free is one of my favorites by them, so that's interesting. Then again, I love some good "whoa ohs" so maybe that's why.

The Hound (Of Blood And Rank) gives me a boner too.

GA2 has more of the straightforward rock songs. The structures are more "to the point" but that doesn't necessarily make them bad.

Their worst song is by far "made out of nothing".

that song.

fatbandit 01-20-2011 03:32 PM

Oh my. I actually played with a band last night who all stood in a line and did that whole 'running man' thing with their backs to the audience. What the actual fuck was all that about.

Spaceman Spiff 01-20-2011 04:55 PM

I'm finally playing another show tomorrow night. It's our first in a month and a half, which is far too much time to wait in between shows. We did record an EP between that last and this one, though, so it wasn't a total waste of time.

gaslight 01-21-2011 02:16 AM

Ibanez have some whack stuff coming out this year

I have to agree on all counts mentioned here. I liked the intro guitar to "Running Free", and that's about where it ended.

I do love "Mother Superior" as well.

Lyrically, "Made Out of Nothing" is totally angry and depressing, like there's nothing better to live for and nobody believed he was telling the truth (when he said he was going to assassinate somebody, maybe?).

I hate "Made of Lines." The chorus line "Just leave uuuuuuuuusssssss...." always makes me think of Michael Jackson's "Just beat iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittt...." (they may even be the exact same notes o_0).

Wtf is that sh*t?

And why aren't there more strings?

Epidemechanical 01-21-2011 09:31 AM

so i didnt even notice before, but it appears my bass was slightly damaged in shipping. (had a fuck of a time with fedex. it was a bag of shit to get it here)

on the bottom of the body, under the bridge on the back of the bas, there is a very small crack which runs around the bottom of the bass its bout 4 inches

cant tell if its a crack in the paint or the bass itself

Epidemechanical 01-21-2011 09:37 AM

also: guitar is in shop getting setup, restrung, adjusted, with electronics being fixed and shielded

all for 30 bucks

success

FlamingCouch 01-21-2011 09:39 AM

weakness. I've got nothing for advice but that fucking sucks.

edit: good to hear on the guitar setup though.

Epidemechanical 01-21-2011 09:40 AM

pretty sure its just a paint crack. its right on the seam near the top of the body (on the back) where the two pieces of wood would come together

there is a seam there

Epidemechanical 01-21-2011 09:42 AM

oh and the guy is also cleaning my frets, polishing them, and filing down the overhang

and his shop is right across the street from my work

lolwin

gaslight 01-21-2011 09:43 AM
Wtf is that sh*t?

And why aren't there more strings?
It's one ugly mother, even in spite of its perfect string allowance.

Epidemechanical 01-21-2011 10:50 AM

no but really how can you tell if a crack is in the paint/finish or wood

FlamingCouch 01-21-2011 10:58 AM

The only idea I would have is if you have an item that will fit into the crack without causing further damage, seeing how far it will go into the body of your bass?

Epidemechanical 01-21-2011 10:58 AM

oh dude crack is shallow as fuck can barely see it

didnt even notice it till today

FlamingCouch 01-21-2011 11:59 AM

mmm. I dunno man, wait for Joe to get off the Coheed train and crank out his turbo power knowledge I guess. But if it's that shallow, most likely just a paint crack - I can't imagine any kind of bashing-damage or what not would affect the interior of the body. and I don't often hear of them just imploding on themselves at random...

but I'm a total n00b when it comes to shit like that - I just play the damn things. Dr. FMB Esquire and all the swanky prefixes is our only hope.

Was typing more but I realized I'm a fucking lunatic

you leaving the pups and whatnot stock in that thing?

FunkMetalBass 01-21-2011 12:04 PM
no but really how can you tell if a crack is in the paint/finish or wood
You can't. The length of the crack is usually a good indicator, but not always.

Without seeing it, I suspect that 1, the crack is down the length of the bass (parallel to the strings and does not indicate a wood stress crack), and 2, that the temperature variation between Illinois and Texas is the cause.

Wood glue expands and contracts, just like wood, except it is probably more susceptible to the temperature variation.
