Mike Patton's Peeping Tom thing leaked, and I'm really impressed by it. Best thing he's done since Bungle split, and definitely my favourite album of the year so far.

Yeah the major touchstones are basically pop and trip-hop. There's some incredibly catchy stuff on there. Whole heap of guest stars (Massive Attack, Norah Jones, Dan the Automator). I guess it's similar to something like Gorillaz or Handsome Boy Modelling School, in spirit.

Been taking advantage of, for once, having a working soulseek by checking out a bunch of new albums even I'd be wary of just buying straight off. Haven't listened to many of them so far, but

Prince - 3121
Surprisingly good (surprising for me, at least; I've never really been able to like what Prince I'd heard before this). Wouldn't be surprised if I got it in the near future.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say..
Better than I thought it'd be, given my previous five minutes of experience with them on myspace. Cocky, catchy, clever and Northern, and just annoyingly enjoyable. I wasn't expecting the music itself to be notable (as opposed to just a background for the lyrics). All the hype is a shame. May end up with this soon, too.

Z-Trip - Shifting Gears
A DJ who made his name with mash-ups, finally getting around to a solo album. Apparently everyone was kind of expecting a DJ Shadow-like massive, sprawling instrumental thing, but instead it's more or less a hip hop album. A hip hop album about hip hop, even. Guest MCs/vocalists littering the landscape, from guys even I know (Chuck D, Murs, Lyrics Born, Busdriver, Aceyalone and, oddly, Chester Bennington, amongst others) to ones I don't, but maybe you guys will (Whipper Whip, Luke Sick, Mystic, etc). Anyway, only listened to it once so far, but I didn't hear a particularly weak performance on the whole thing (Luke, in particular, was great), and the backdrops and instrumental tracks seemed quite good.

It's huge, though; tries to cover all it's possible bases - hip hop as a party starter (J5's Soup, "Listen to the DJ", for example), hip hop as politically charged (Chuck D, "Shock and Awe), a DJ's virtuosity (the instrumental tracks), nostalgic, friendly hip hop (Murs and Supernatural, "Breakfast Club"), battle tracks (Luke Sick, "Bury Me Standing"), and it even gets all spiritual and gospel-y on the final (fifteen minute) track. So if anything, Z-trip overreaches himself. But it's pretty good, and I'd rather he did too much than too little.

The Sword - Age of Winters
Got this because it's being touted a little on RYM as Awesome Metal of the Year, and to be fair, they're almost right. I'm only halfway through my first listen at the moment, and it seems as much really loud rock as metal. It is fairly awesome, though, at least to a fan of loud, Sabbath-loving bands.

The Feeling - Sewn (single)
Another thing I get when I'm back at home for easter is a few, shoddy, music channels, and this has been getting a few plays. I'm surprised that I really, really like it. I've read reviews comparing it to Embrace, Keane, Coldplay, etc. Grudgingly, I suppose they do sound like that general thing. But they don't suck. It's quite an achievement.

The full song's about six minutes long, making it about 50% more awesome than the video version, which I'm sure is chopped down to three or four. They have no album out yet, but I'm quite looking forward to it, to see if they can do this more than once. Maybe I should buy the single; the b-sides could provide clues.

The names in this are unbelievable; Solomon Burke, Don Covay, Wilson Picket, Otis Redding, Joe Tex. It sounds awesome, but unfortunately their sole recorded output is a single from 1968, and all I have of it is the b-side (That's How It Feels). The record company, inexplicably, refused to fund the album they wanted to record :(

And, by the time they recorded the single (A-side being "Soul Meeting"), Otis Redding and Wilson Picket were no longer a part of the group (the one through death, the other disagreement) and had been replaced by Arthur Conway and Ben. E King respectively. Still an unutterably great set of artists, though, and this song's excellent. Looking for the A-side as we speak.

Been diggin' some J Mascis and the Fog, awesome chill out music. I've been listening to Dinosaur JR aswell, but I'm liking J's styles more right now.

Sublime. Can't beleive im only discovering this band now! Just got their Self-titled through the R&M mailing list and im totally diggin it. Prompted me to get 40oz. for freedom as well. Love the raggae/punk/ska thing they got goin.

Yeah it's really decent. Much better than [I]Musicology[/I]. Still a few dud tracks, but there's also some really great songs like "Fury" and "Lolita".
