Sweet, dude.

I've had a 40" electric upright idea in the works for about a year now, and I even have most of the AutoCad drawings for it. It will be a subcontra bass (an octave lower than the electric bass), 4-strings, a rectangular steel rod running all the way through it for sustain and to eliminate a truss rod, and a 6" radius so that it can be bowed. All-in-all, I could probably build it for $500 if I had the time or money.

gaslight 12-31-2010 08:31 AM

Sounds insane .

Build it.

I'm hoping I'll be able to get my head around the arco technique. I only tried learning upright briefly when I was like 13 but I wasn't even interested in music then so it didn't go so well.

BenJammin 12-31-2010 03:15 PM

I just discovered that there was a bow in the bag. I played with it for, like, an hour.

gaslight 12-31-2010 08:43 PM

Nice one :).

fatbandit 01-01-2011 06:36 AM

Woah. I was so tired last night, I went to bed at like 9pm for a nap, and then woke up at half 11 this morning. I'm still tired too :( So I totally missed NYE. Lame.

The LEDs stopped working in my bass :/ Jon said he has no idea why it's happened, and he's going to have to have the fretboard off and replaced in order to find out and replace the faulty circuitry. Super lame :( I've managed to snag a 7 string off somebody I know for practices and shows until mine is done, but it's not really that nice of a bass and I'm scared to gig it incase I damage it.

gaslight 01-01-2011 06:47 AM

NYE is nothing to fuss over, don't stress.

Shame about the bass though.

fatbandit 01-01-2011 07:49 AM

Yeah, I usually don't do too much for NYE anyway, it's just good to see peoples.

I can live with the bass I guess. You need shovel hands to play it as the neck is so big, the action's higher than I'd like and the fret job is pretty poor, but I'm a pro ;D The silly thing is Jon's fixing mine so I can gig with LEDs, but I'd be no worse off using either bass for these gigs as neither currently have lights.

Also, I'm getting a flight case made for my GT200 (I'm not taking it on tour without protection), but should I get it with a 2u rack built into the case? I have a mic/DI blender and a graphic EQ for it that I'm carrying in a 2u Gator rack at the moment. It'd be cool to eliminate carrying an extra box around, but I'm not sure how big/heavy it would be. It'd allow me to power up my pedalboard, rack and amp head from one plug socket, and supply the soundguy with a noise gated and twice high passed blended DI/mic signal while only having to plug one mic lead in really. Super convenient, yet super inconvenient?

gaslight 01-01-2011 08:01 AM

Just depends how heavy it ends up being I guess.

Convenience vs $/weight

fatbandit 01-01-2011 08:11 AM

Hmm. I dunno. I mean, we already have a bunch of stuff that's a 2 man lift. I say a bunch, I mean my cab and the guitarist's cab. What's one more to worry about? My old Marshall head was a 2 man lift when flightcased, so it'll be similar to this one surely? I imagine with it being a 400W amp it would have had more weight from power valves and more importantly transformers. But I think we're talking small differences when you're at that stage.

It'd look epic too.

gaslight 01-01-2011 08:15 AM

I can't really help, I've never flight-cased anything.

fatbandit 01-01-2011 08:20 AM

I've never had to do it either, I only had the one for my marshall because it came with it. Hurm. I guess I'll ring round a few places and find out :)

gaslight 01-01-2011 08:21 AM

I understand it's really expensive but that's about all I know about it.

I really hope I don't have to take anything musical on a plane anytime soon, I don't even have a current passport.

fatbandit 01-01-2011 08:24 AM

I'm not really doing it for plane purposes, although the idea is that if we need to, I won't have a problem. But the back of a van full of stuff is a rough place to be for what is essentially a box with lightbulbs in.

gaslight 01-01-2011 08:27 AM

Yeah that's true. I hate worrying about my gear.

How will I ever sleep again once I've got an upright to worry about and bows and shit :(.

Like having a fucken baby

fatbandit 01-01-2011 08:29 AM

Do you gig out much with it at the moment?

gaslight 01-01-2011 08:43 AM

Nah I don't have an upright at all yet

fatbandit 01-01-2011 09:27 AM

Oh man, casing an upright would be a pain? Not only is it big, it's an inconvenient shape. At least amps are pretty much only ever box shaped to start with D:

gaslight 01-01-2011 09:40 AM

Oh fuck casing it

They make flightcases for them but bugger it, mine won't be on a plane anytime soon. I'll just get a nice softie for it.

fatbandit 01-01-2011 09:45 AM

Actually, I think regardless of cases, DBs are unwieldy and awkward, haha. Even a soft case is still the size of a DB once it's on ;D

gaslight 01-01-2011 09:49 AM

Yeah they're not built for any consideration other than to sound pimp.

I doubt one could even fit in my jeep, without poking through into the radio controls or something . Borrow a sedan for that shit.

fatbandit 01-01-2011 09:55 AM

That's when an EUB would seem mega appealing to me. You'd still need an amp then though ;<

gaslight 01-01-2011 09:58 AM

Yeah, they do look nice. A good one costs 4-5G here though so I'm just gonna learn on an analog one. I do love the look of them too.

fatbandit 01-01-2011 10:06 AM

If you just want to learn, Stagg do an apparently decent cheap one? I'm sure you know this and have decided against though :)

gaslight 01-01-2011 10:11 AM

Hmm, I can't find any of those locally. There is a Ned Steinberger NXT that is within my price range, now I'm not sure what to do.

My gut tells me I should learn on a real bodied one.

FunkMetalBass 01-01-2011 06:06 PM

[quote=gaslight;18336028]Sounds insane :lol:.

Will do. :) If you're ever in AZ, I'll even let you play on it.

Gotta finish all my other projects first, though. I'll be applying coat 2 of epoxy on my fretless today. :) Fuckin' w00t!

Has anybody else heard of the roasted maple necks that Ernie Ball is putting on their Music Man guitars and basses?

gaslight 01-01-2011 10:21 PM

Is it tasty like roasted macadamia?

And man, applying coats to a fretless fingerboard is about one of the most soothing activities there is.

Yes. Sadowsky and a few others have the option too.

The process basically speeds up the neck drying stage so that it is more stable, solid, and less reactive to temperature/humidity variations. One reason there is an upcharge is because some necks will bow and warp during the roasting, so it is instantly lost product that they can no longer use for production.

Supposedly it works well and some claim it aids in sustain.

Capital H got a little review and mention on some Spanish blog of some dude in Ecuador. Pretty random and neat.

FlamingCouch 01-06-2011 09:54 AM

 :thumb: How did you get a review in Ecuador?!
