Wait a sec what the hell is a Blast Beat?
Blast beat is a drum beat consisting of rapid alternating strokes on the snare and bass drums. The snare drum forms the focus of such a beat, with bass drum often played beneath the snare to create a 'wall of sound'. The hi-hat or a ride cymbal is often played simultaneously with either the bass drum or rarely with the snare drum, however crash cymbal or china cymbals can often be featured as well. (about the song "Ending Credits" from Damnation)
Amazing material, but it's too short for it to be as epic as it could have been. Shame that it wasn't a few minutes longer.
i think it was the perfect length for that type of song... |
/laments martin's leaving the band.
its kind of sad that it had to end this way, especailly when you see how desperate he was to join opeth in the first place. oh well i will look forward to whatever his project would be. Oftentimes they don't match up with the music at all, making everything sound like a big mess.
|
I am completely against blastbeats in Opeth. They wouldn't fit, and once they begin to be used, they often become overused.
|
Trivium overuse their Blast beats way to fucken Much.
|
What are blast beats?
like constant double bass? or quick bursts? |
blast beats are like, hmmm... Snares played in 16th notes in rapid succession. Lots of double bass too.
Most Death Metal use it alot. Trivium do not use blast beasts. |

Ill have to give that a listen.
Wait. EDIT: I said snare, not bass drum. |
It's really fast snare with constant bass drum and usually a ride cymbal. You notice it when it happens.
|

Ok, Cool:)
Just listen to something like Cryptopsy for further reference. |

You were probably thinking double bass.
|

like me :upset: |
haha yea,
Alot of Double Bass in an Opeth song is Masters Apprentices. |
Or Wreath.
|
yep, I prefer Wreath to MA::)
|
Eh, if you want a good example of a blast beat download some of the newer songs from Behemoth. Just about their whole songs is one big blast beat :(
|
Little too late on the blastbeat reply there bro.

i see.....why do people say they are bad? what is so bad about blastbeats?
Many drummers say it's just noisemaking, that it basically just satisfies the primal instinct in us to hit things really fast and hard. Many drummers also dislike the amount of praise it gets, saying it's just one beat among a million. I personally am a big fan, I think at the right moment it can add a frenzied effect to music, but there are definitely bands that overuse the blast beat (Origin). Master's Apprentices >>> Wreath. |
I like MA more than Wreath, I just like the way double bass fits with Wreath.
They should've used that solo Steven Wilson played in the Lamentations DVD. That sounds pretty sweet:) |
I've never really heard Axenrot play. Is he more of a death metal drummer? If so, we could see another MAYH -esque album.
Well when he played live he was soo good. And he adding double kicks at the end of closure :D Sorry but doubles are perfect then, just at the last time that riff happens it topped it off making it so intense. OPETH WITH AN OCCASIONAL BLAST BEAT WOULD BE AWESOME, but on a more sensible note its too late to incoprate that into their music now so no, and it would be alot more generic. Blast beats can be amazing but they have to be done correctly in moderation. |
Mikaels last solo in Wreath is one of my favorite Opeth solos.
|
Yeah, blast beats sound like they'd suck balls in Opeth.
And yeah DoG awesome solo. |
Best Opeth solo of all time = The Leper Affinity
|
Best solo by Opeth imo: A Fair Judgement
/eargasms. |
Best solo by Opeth imo: A Fair Judgement
/eargasms.
That's actually 2nd place for me, and probably the highlight of the entire album. The end of Peter's solo, while being really easy, is incredibly awesome. I've actually shed a tear or two during that song before. |
Wreath has some crazy *** solos in it. That song is frickin nice. Very long too.
