I heard it was a eulogy for an actual person, but I forget the person's name.
|
its about an out of body experience.
what was that drug mentioned in the liner notes? Ketamine? the drug produces out of body experiences. The lyrics to the song mention something similar. "when you see your own eulogy" i think that was the lyrics... yeh
Actually, it goes: "Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own Eulogy?" And I don't think that song is about drugs. |

I agree. "He has a lto of nothing to say." Its definetly directed at someone. I think its just anger towards someone, who maybe Maynard was once close to, but they soon grew apart. Or a broken friendship. Like he had something to say, but I soon learned it was just bull s/hit. I think thats wut its about. "you claimed all this time that you wold die for me". Like a best friend, who betrayed him. And even though they aren't friends anymore, hes still angry about it. |

Exactly. It's like someone who kept talking about his loyalty (*or whatever he was talking about, I don't know*) "you claimed all this time that you would die for me" but then he can't back it up "Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?" In other words, someone who talked a lot but couldn't back up what he said: "He had a lot to say, he had a lot of nothing to say." Some people say it's a memoir for the comedian, Bill Hicks. But I like the above explanation better. |

THey say a lot of things they can'tb ack up or do. Who knows. I think it could just be a friend of his. I really don't think its Bill Hicks. Because Bill Hicks didn't have a lot of nothing to say, he had a lto of something to say, and I know tool feels the same way. They would be angry at his death, but not like Eulogy says. So I don't think its baout him. I like the above explanation as well. |

Best thread ever. I'm a "Huge T00L" fan seen them 6 times wish I would have been in this post 70-some odd pages ago lol...good stuff. I remember my first time seeing T00L live at lalopalooza (sp) with snoop dog, korn and the marly bros and a lot more. It was in 97 during the aemina tour and he was still using his Sonor live!!! I was blown away at the sound quality and musicianship of the whole band. Man has thier music inspired me and brought me out of really low times in my life...I swear putting on some quality headphones and sitting there with your eyes closed and T00L jamming can do wonders. Danny is one of my favorite drummers in world and has kept me playing drums even when I wanted to give up.
Anyways if anyone is interested I have a cover of THE PATIENT at this site...no singer yet cuase we all know no one can sound like him...I also play drums on all the songs at the site except for the first two songs(which I will soon) and the last one. And if anyone else has any tunes/art you would like to share that have been inspired by T00L we would all love to see/hear as well.(cough cough stagefrightken and your sweet kit). Whats with the bumpage of all the old posts :( I think Eulogy is about 'martyrs' in general. Who'se (not a word i know, but this is the intranet, no-one cares) aim is to be a martyr and gain respect and not just to benefit the worl. This, of course, is a false image given out by the person and this song is to point it out.
What connection this has to Bill hicks, I do not know. But it's dedicated to him. Like most of the Aenima album. |
schism off of laterus has to be there greatest song ever
|
my favorite song off lateralus has to be lateralis. the whole meaning of the song is exactly where i'm at right now, i just may be aiming too high.
|
i like the grudge, the patient and schism from lateralus. schism is probly my favorite.
|
reflection is an awesome song, and the three songs fit together heaps well (disposition, reflection,triad)...even tho reflection starts off heaps slow it gets heaps kool and spiritual...i love it. but lateralus is my favourite tool song, and the album is my favourite too....its heaps arty and moody. i love it

I think people take it like its aimed at Bill Hicks, as opposed to in honor of him and his opinions. I think it could be about martyrs too, people trying ot be martyrs, when they really aren't, and they aren't benfeiting society. "Why then are you surprised when you hear your own Eulogy?"-- i think thats right, can't quite remember. That could be saying, you know that you were gonna die, you wanted to be a martryr didnt you. I'm gonna post an interpratation of Eulogy. |
to the guy who posted the patient cover
thats a pretty awesome cover... i thought it was the real song for a few seconds..... but very good man, and welcome to the forums man :thumb: |

this holy gift that tool has gotten us all to see and understand, is to think for our selves. we are all one mind. one individuall mind, that shouldnt be told what not to do, but to have boundaries, these boudaries are made up in our own minds. when you hold that knife up to another kid, you argue with your self, and hopefully, talk your self out of stabbing him. i thank tool, and you should too, for with out them i dont think id have the amount of respect that i have for life. i think we all feel what tool is doing through there music, even if we are rendered unable to express it though words, soon speech and leterature will be obsolete, and there will be nothing but one mind. we are eternal, all this pain is an illusion......we are menat to think, if we dont, we mite aswell be dead.
just my thoughts... |
Wow, nice thread/post man! I kinda had an idea Tool were a really deep band, but I've never really been absolutely in love with them enough to get that much out of their songs. I've heared Maynard in a couple of interviews, and he sounds like a pretty philosophical guy. I think I'll hafta buy some of their albums and check out their lyrics, etc.
I hope this post hasn't been spam.
getting deeper into the lyrical and musical meanings of the tool songs makes them just that much more interesting. i suggest looking into it if it interests you. |

I love Reflection, it's an amazing song that doesn't seem to get much credit from what I hear. I also think Lateralus is my favorite Tool song/albu. W00t |
That was a really good Patient cover. My band is working on 4 Degrees right now.

just my thoughts...
Right on! I feel the same way. Tool has influenced me, and taught me to think for myself and question authority. And for that I am very thankful. |
My band hates Tool. I am the only fan. Then again, I'm also the only one who listens to any metal at all and the only prog the rest of my band touches is The Mars Volta and Dredg.

Thankyou one and all, for my time in the tool threads, its been an interesting 55-odd pages since I arrived, but now that most of the same stuff keeps coming up, I'm going to bid you farewell.
Keep analysing - sometimes maynard's "over-analysing" line has been intpreted to mean that we should NEVER analyise anything, ever. Its just a matter of realising when to stop, and that we can't affix a defintive meaning to everything. Its like a bike - take it apart to learn about, but just remember how to put the pieces back together! I'm sure I'll be drawn back to visit now and then...but keep up the intelligent discussion in the meantime, toolers...and APCers and PLCers etc etc Keep the peace! cheers - joe(a_U_M) |

Also, i notice a lot of people are stopping their regular postings here since of repetition. That i can agree on, but at the moment ther really isnt a lot new to talk about with tool. I will keep posting up any news related to tool that I can dig up (if anyone hasnt checked out my last link with Adam's full set up, I urge you to do so now) But apart from that, all this thread is good for at the moment is asking tool related questions, and continuing the theme about learning/adapting their songs (and trust me, I aint going anywhere :thumb: ) |

Hmm ill try and post a list of Justin/Pauls set up
ill be back |

Reflection is one my top favorite Tool songs, but its beauty only shines through if you listen to Disposition/Reflection/Triad in that order, since they flow really well and sound good next to each other... or at least I think they do. :) |
Most people think they sound best in that order, which was probably the biggest downfall in the whole alternate track order for Lateralus thing. Anyway, I'm just listening to Message To Harry Manback, and I want to know whats with the birds in the background?

A more in depth list of Adam's set up, rather than pictures of his 100+ pedals. Although im not too sure if this is accurate, the amps look correct, but I was convinced that Adam used a Morely wah? As well as this, there are a few things not lsited that he uses, but they are slightly more bizzare and probably not up for sale at most guitar stores |
I have that Wah pedal :D
|
I dont know exactly, id say its enhace the satirical side of things (the piano etc)
I dont know.. |
I like the fact that justin isn't afraid to use a whammy and wah pedal. the only bassist i've heard that uses a whammy.
|
I have never heard Justin use a Wah pedal.
He makes very good use of the Whammy, however. |
yea i like the bass whammy
|
