Could any of you guys reccomend me a cd to pick up from Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath.
All I have is The Wall and Symptoms of the Universe.
probaly dark side of the moon but thats always the obvious choice , besides that try either meddle or piper at the gates of dawn for sabbath go with paranoid then master of reality :thumb: |
Pop in the 70s and 80s was just the music that was better than the other music. Not ****ty sell out boybands with guitars.
Not all of it, have you ever listened to the carpenters? my god that is the shittiest music in the universe it makes me wish a cinder block would crush my head
Could any of you guys reccomend me a cd to pick up from Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath.
In terms of pink floyd Dark side of the moon is a popular "starter album" it sort of gets you into their type of stuff. hmmm Meddle is good, Wish you were here or animals would be my other reccomendations. But wish you were here doesn't have the same sense of togetherness as the other's it's just a few good songs that they threw under the same name type thing. |

not so much that it nessecarily won't so much as the record company's won't let it(or take a chance on it or whatever you want). That's why you don't sign anything without creative control :thumb:. |
Indeed.
Kim Mitchell=the pwn :D I suggest all of you go see him since he's touring. And he's with April wine and they aren't bad. |
Ten Years After is great classic rock band that not a lot of people know about.
If You like Zeppelin or Hendrix look into this band. My dad said that they played at Woodstock 69'. And Yeah there is a small amount of teenagers listening to classic rock, me being one of them, but more then half of them have their heads so far up MTV's *** that they'll probably never hear or even want to know about the greatest bands ever. |
I think he's coming to the hawk rocks the park festival here in london next week, along with april wine, steppenwolf, alice cooper etc... It's going to be awesome.
Oh ya I saw jeff heely last night at the blues fest here... for free and right next to the stage. The festival was being held in a praking lot and there was an alley from the street behind that led to spot level with the stage and five feet away max. Canned heat and Jimmie vaughan are lpaying sometime too, I hope I can go and I hope they don't block off the alley, I had better seats then anyone who actually paid to get in . |
Yeah, ok i admit im only 14, but hey, i love classic rock,i love pink floyd and queen! i was raised on it,(my father would kill me if i got into that "rap crap")
good charlotte...UCK! they are what i call a pop boy band tryin to be badass, its horrible what the youth of today are listening to, if your going to listen to a pop band, then at least listen to something out of the 80's!!!
So do I.. also 14 but turning 15!!!.. anyways.. Iam new on this forum... I don't like punk bands like good charlotte, yellowcard, simple plan, etc.. They're the "boy bands" of rock.. they're not even close to music!! It's amazing how rock & roll changed after a period of time and how they lowered the standards.. if this was the 70s or 80s.. those bands wouldn't even get a record deal... bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are the untouchables of rock & roll/metal... no one would get close to them for the next 10 years or so.. that's what I believe... their the Michael Jordan or Muhammad Ali of rock... :) |

Even more than Kim Mitchell. |

I love Heely. Even more than Kim Mitchell.
I've seen him twice now actually :p! If only you knew how good the spot I had was, it was basically standing at the side of the stage. |
Whats awesome about classic rock is that its old and no one can change which way its going. its perfect to listen to. I love listening to it when ever i have a chance. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The doors, and i dont know if they are classic rock, but DRamarama. classic rock is awesome.

They're on the woodstock DVD aren't they? (i could move a few feet and check but meh)
|
Im pretty sure. If you haven't ever heard them, listen to their most known song: I'd love to change the world. It's on the Farenhiet (sp) 9/11 sound track. Also an awesome song to play on the guitar :) Alvin is the man.
|
are you talking to me? because i was insinuating I do have the woodstock DVD....

I think i've heard that song. Good song. |
Glad to see all the classic rock fans. The way I see it, most bands that come out are popular for a period of time, but eventually everyone gets tired of them. But classic bands like Led Zeppelin, ACDC, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, even Metallica and all the other classic rock bands are never forgotten. Every new generation discovers them and they aren't just a phase.
|
You know it must be a good band when people are still listening to them up to 30 years later.
|
^ Yes, one of the greatest bands ever. That is when they have Joe Walsh. I have the Yer album, and Rides Again, and those have to be two of the greatest CD's I own.
I don't recall anyone metioning The MC5.[/QUOT MC5 are awesome also try new york dolls, the sonics, and the greatest band of all time KISS |
are you talking to me? because i was insinuating I do have the woodstock DVD....
Ah, I was just refering that to anyone who cared and or listened :) |
The thing about the degregation of music (not just Rn'R)... well, if you examine it, its not such a suprise. I mean, all those songs that they danced to back in the 70's, (Not Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Greatful Dead, etc but more mainstream dance/pop music) say, Niel Sakadas stuff, for example, he wrote great music, 'Love will keep us together', etc, not rock, but you know, 70's music. Alot of thought went into the stuff he wrote and the piano bits and some of the chords and the transitions are just really catchy, yet its good musicianship. On the outside, it was simple music. Artists these days, they discard musicianship for catchyness and simplicity.
For example, Aaron Carters 'Candy' (In my sis was watching nicolodian (sp?) and they played this song, Ugh.) and its so fuc'king catchy, but the musicianship is close to nil. The lyrics mean nothing, no thought, just a nice catchy beat. But the fact is, aduiences can whilstle along to it and its an 'easy' song. Electonica and synthicysers (sp?) made it worse, just being able to throw together sounds that make up music in a way. This starts coming into the late 80's and 90's and begins to worsen music, as people realise that it dosnt have to be 'good music' to sell, but just catchy. (Hence Hip hop and Rap, etc) Meh, ive had too much time to think. It just that, everyones like, what the hell has happned to music and all, well, you could have seen it coming, mabye it wasnt obvious, but it was there, a tranistion to simpler and simpler music, that just sold. DVG. |
Umm..... what?
|
Yes but real musicianship is still recignised. If a song means something to the artist and the artist has pollished the song to near perfection before putting it on an album people will remember it in 30 years. That is what most classic rock bands do. These new bands just throw 4 powerchords into a basic drum rhthem and the bass player just plays a few different notes insted of brilliant well though out riffs. In classic rock the riffs are very important and are most of the time memorable.
This is all the product of the fact that it's just that easy to make money in the music bisiness these days. Screw being good if you can write an album and make half a million dollars and then stop with music. That's the whole attitude and i'm sick of it. There are still plenty of good bands but their sound is so different from the standard Mtv sound that the youth today doesn't care about it. For examplekenny wayne shepherd band makes an amazing album in 1999 yet the only people who buy it are people over the age of 40. It's cause they grew up on that sound and like it. Young people never give something different (at least for them) a chance. Of course with this revolution more people are getting into classic rock, nu metal is fading and there seems to be a pretty healthy Alt and Indie scene. Things are looking up for music today. |
Aaron Carters 'Candy'
Keep in mind that that was a cover though. :)
In classic rock the riffs are very important and are most of the time memorable.
Yeah, unless they basically noodle the song away. But that is usually done by bands that put lown emphasis on recording and more on live perfromances. Like The Grateful Dead, especially on their debut self titled album. That technique has been lost. These days it's more about laying down some unoriginal power chord progression. Maybe with a few hammers, and a mediocre solo. Which it shouldn't be. You really can't even here the chord or anything at that because it is drownd in distortion. |
Keep in mind that that was a cover though
GAH! They can't even make their own music! And dare to turn it into a SINGLE! *fumes* DVG. |

You can't even pick out the chords that they are using cause it's too distorted.
|

One of the reasons why they rule :thumb: |
How do you think the general middle/high school populace will respond to a band that does 'classic rock' style originals? Because I'm thinking whenever I form a band, thats what I'll want to do. If kids really want something like this, and I"m a monopoly......$$$$ :)
Anyway, I'm dreaming. Whats your opinions on this? |
I think that it has to be a sort of hard rock Ac/dc type thing. Absolutely no blues allowed or they will hate it.
|
Don't just do a well known Classic Rock song, that's to predictable. Do something from like...The Stooges or The MC5. Most of them won't know who they are, they're not that complicated of songs, and since they have that Hard Rock touch, most will love it.
Go forth my child :thumb: |
favourite bands of mine include the beatles and the doors. definitly masters who need recognition but not to the point where we have teenagers listening to them because its "cool".
my parents always point out i like many bands that; A. have dead members B. i wasnt even concieved when their music was made. |
I don't think they will nessecarily hate it, it depends what kind of blues... blues blues won't be welcomed so much but lets say zeppelin blues I think would do fine. (that was to rock not roll[ed])
In my writing (which has yet to be played in conert) there is definitely alot of classic rock influence, I'd say in terms of my drumming style the doors and the who are huge influences. The doors influence I think comes through in our music, even with the current lack of lyrics, and keyboards. My lead guitarist's probably most influenced by Hendrix and Page. My rhythm guitarist is is most influenced i think by the doors and the beatles. And my bassist's biggest writing influence is John Entwhistle. |
I'm not rolled anymore! Woo go me!
On topic, I think there will be a lot of people that would like a good MC5 song even though they have never heard it before. And then there will be people who want you to play a Blink182 song. My advice, play what you like to play! Keep it real. You can't please the world so just please yourself. |
I would play Phish - Down with Disease.
|
Cream *drools* their song sra ejust completely mindblowingly amazingly good.
"twice upon a time in the valley of the tears the auctioneer is bidding on a box of fading years"
Agreed. I don't care how egotistical they were, they were amazing. |
