have you seen appaloosa? fucking brilliant.

Spaceman Spiff 04-25-2009 08:55 AM

The new Mars Volta song is wicked.

As is the Cryptomnesia album.

fatbandit 04-25-2009 09:29 AM

The new Glassjaw song is old news, but I just listened to it again and it sounds amazing. They need to do a new album NOWWWW

What is Cryptomnesia?

I'm holding out for the full Mars Volta album before I lay down judgment. This one seems like it might actually be decent, though, since it's supposed to be slower, and less crap.

This new song isn't slow at all.

Cryptomnesia is an album by mostly Mars Volta members and a couple other guys.

Omar - Guitar (TMV)
Cedric - Vocals (TMV)
Juan - Bass (TMV)
Zach Hill - Drums (Hella)
Jonathan Hischke - Synth (Hella)

I've never listened to Hella, so I don't know much about those two guys, but Zach Hill is a really sick drummer.

It really doesn't sound like Mars Volta, though. If you're interested, check out these:

BenJammin 04-25-2009 12:12 PM

I'll check those out shortly.

I hated Bedlam in Goliath, or whatever it was. What a load of shit. I still like their first two the best.

I loved Bedlam. The only one of their albums that I don't like all the songs off is Amputechture. I think the opening and closing songs are pretty weak, but the six in the middle are all pretty sweet.

My favorite is probably Frances The Mute.

BenJammin 04-25-2009 12:18 PM

Frances has amazing songs on it, but a bit too much in the way of filler noise, which drove me crazy. I think the songs themselves were excellent, and maybe better than Deloused, but having to wait 4 minutes into a track to actually hear the song just kills it for me.

Yeah, sometimes I can deal with it, sometimes not. I hated Frances for a long time because of all that, but one day I sat down and listened to it without skipping anything and I was totally blown away. I will often skip through the minutes of nothing when I listen to the album, but some of it is there to tie it all together: Sarcophogi at the very beginning and end of the album, Con Safo at the end of Cygnus and the end of Miranda, stuff like that.

The "No there's no light" part at the end of Cassandra Gemini is one of the most epic things ever.

BenJammin 04-25-2009 12:27 PM

That Cryptomnesia is awful. Someone needs to tell Omar that every time he has an idea that he shouldn't necessarily record it. I understand he is a prolific composer, but that doesn't mean it's all good.

I don't know, I like it. Everyone likes whatever they like.

Apparently a group of musicians liked what he was doing enough to be a part of it.

Epidemechanical 04-25-2009 12:52 PM

yeah bedlam in goliath was terrible and so is this new crap

This.

His ideas aren't nearly refined enough and his music doesn't fluidly progress. If he wrote one song a week as opposed to a new song every 22.5 hours, I would probably listen to a lot more of his stuff.

Moon Flavor 04-25-2009 01:13 PM

Mars Volta WERE a good band but goddamn....

Zach Hill is too good for those psuedo-psychedelic dumbasses

I'm more looking forward to Bygones, the Zach Hill/Tera Melos side project

Sablate McNuff 04-25-2009 01:36 PM

So, has anybody heard anything from Dirk Lance's new band Willie's Nerve Clinic? I saw a video blog they posted a couple months ago, but I haven't heard anything since.

I'm really starting to love that Warwick Streamer tone. I want it without the Warwick neck.

BenJammin 04-25-2009 01:42 PM

You play an 8 string. How could a Warwick neck possibly phase you?

burtonbassist_102 04-25-2009 02:13 PM

i've yet to actually play one. they're a pretty rare commodity up here.

:(
You play an 8 string. How could a Warwick neck possibly phase you?
Chunkiness is not the same as wideness.

BenJammin 04-25-2009 02:22 PM

Yeah, but if you can comfortably play on the lowest strings, it should still be manageable.

Sablate McNuff 04-25-2009 02:24 PM
You play an 8 string. How could a Warwick neck possibly phase you?
The Warwick necks are so thick. My 8-string's isn't much thicker than my Schecter's.

Sablate McNuff 04-25-2009 02:26 PM
Yeah, but if you can comfortably play on the lowest strings, it should still be manageable.
It's rather difficult to play above the 12th fret on the F#, tbqh. You almost have to wrap more of your arm around it.

Epidemechanical 04-25-2009 02:26 PM

lol i love people who complain about stupid crap like neck thickness or "being neck heavy"

if you have problems lifting a bass neck....lol

Sablate McNuff 04-25-2009 02:47 PM

There's something to be said about the ease of playing a bass that has a thin neck and balances perfectly.

Epidemechanical 04-25-2009 03:32 PM
There's something to be said about the ease of playing a bass that has a thin neck and balances perfectly.
lol and we gotta make it as easy as possible cause we're all delicate like special unique flowers

Sablate McNuff 04-25-2009 04:07 PM

Any idea about what to do for latency issues when recording with my fast track pro?
lol and we gotta make it as easy as possible cause we're all delicate like special unique flowers
As opposed to intentionally making it more difficult?

Whaaaaaaat?

I totally didn't know this was happening, badass.

Anyways, what up casual.

fatbandit 04-26-2009 10:46 AM

They should have just hired Zach Hill in the first place instead of going on that stupid drummer hunt.

Moon Flavor 04-26-2009 11:04 AM

Yeah the thing about Zach Hill is he always sounds so much like Zach Hill and I can see how a band might not want that.
