While I'm thinking of it, Stoic, have you heard Tarot yet?

Stoic 07-16-2005 11:52 AM

Heard some random songs a while ago and liked Marco Hietala's vocals but didnt go further.

You really should check out their album Suffer Our Pleasures. They're arguably the most ass-kicking power metal band ever.

Shadows Within 07-16-2005 12:00 PM

can someone name some other good power metal besides tarot?

Stoic 07-16-2005 12:01 PM

I'm actually listening to some samples off this album on cduniverse at the moment.

The Navigator is awesome, Tobias can really do a lot and he's still so young. I think song kind of converted me Mr Steerpike :)
can someone name some other good power metal besides tarot?
Blind Guardian is certainly an ideal pick. The rest will be hostory

tks also would three inches of blood be power metal i would think that because they have that song "destroy the orcs" that guys voice freaks me out too much

Stoic 07-16-2005 12:08 PM

Human Fortress! Another awesome vocalist, defenders of the crown is a really good album.
 See everybody? I'm always right. \m/
You just know your music well :p

Shadows Within 07-16-2005 12:11 PM

are there any power metal bands like A7Xs new CD i like that stuff
tks also would three inches of blood be power metal i would think that because they have that song "destroy the orcs" that guys voice freaks me out too much
Well... technically they are power metal, but I don't feel that they're a particularly good example of the genre.
You just know your music well :p
When your life revolves around the arts, it's kind of a given.
are there any power metal bands like A7Xs new CD i like that stuff
I listened to bit off that album just now. I wasn't particularly impressed, but it does bear a resemblence to Tarot. Sort of.

The vocal harmonies sounded a little tinny and the guitar riffs were a little muddy, while most power metal bands have much cleaner production. Overall, I'd say your safest bets would be:

A Night at the Opera - Blind Guardian
Suffer Our Pleasures - Tarot
Under Jolly Roger - Running Wild
Once - Nightwish
Hellfire Club - Edguy
Hall of the Mountain King - Savatage

EDIT: Whoops. Didn't mean to double-post there.

EDIT: Fixed.

I would strongly reccommend listening to Iced earth
then you will fall to your knees and weep tears of purest metal at the fact you will never hear a better band (well unless you listen to maiden) in all your helpless, metal crazed life

I can't believe I forgot Iced Earth. The heat must be getting to me.

Demons and Wizards is a side-project of Jon Schaffer and Hansi Kursch. It's neither Iced Earth, nor Blind Guardian.

Great music though.

Shattered_Future 07-16-2005 01:02 PM

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned Sonata Arctica...they play great power metal.

Steerpike 07-16-2005 01:08 PM

Haven't heard enough of them to make a fair judgment yet.

Shattered_Future 07-16-2005 01:18 PM

Try purchasing, or at least getting stuff from Ecliptica (sp?). From what I've heard off of it, it is by far their best album.

I have Reckoning Night...it's a bit different from their earlier albums...not as good, but still a decent listen.

CaptainWaits 07-16-2005 01:27 PM
I'm suprised nobody has mentioned Sonata Arctica...they play great power metal.
That's the one power metal band I don't appeal to, other than Hammerfall.

Lord Abortion 07-16-2005 01:39 PM

I must have mentioned sonata at some point in this thread,
I really like them, reckoning night is a great album as is winterheart's guild

Brew 07-16-2005 01:51 PM

Apparently Sonata don't like being referred to as Power Metal, they consider themselves Heavy Metal.

Either way, they're 'kin amazing. Kakko's voice is beautiful.

I saw Human Fortress mentioned on the last page...I've only got about 4 songs by them but they're really good, I'd get an album but they're too expensive :(

IheartSP 07-16-2005 02:36 PM

Sonata is definately Power Metal, Heavy Metal is like Maiden. I don't like them, way too cheesy for me and it's not focused nearly enough on the guitar.

Stoic 07-16-2005 02:39 PM
I saw Human Fortress mentioned on the last page...I've only got about 4 songs by them but they're really good, I'd get an album but they're too expensive :(
How much do their albums cost?
Sonata is definately Power Metal, Heavy Metal is like Maiden
yup

Steerpike 07-16-2005 02:41 PM

I feel your pain on expensive albums. I've pirated most of the tracks from MSG's Assault Attack, but want to get the real thing. Problem is, it's an out-of-circulation import, so the copies still available for sale go for over $30 on Amazon.

*sigh*
this reminds me of original Psychotic Waltz CDs costing 30euros each :upset:

I feel guilty spending money on CDs and at the same time I feel guilty downloading them from the net.

Brew 07-16-2005 03:14 PM

The average Power Metal album costs £16 in England, depending on where you go.

It sucks :(

Shattered_Future 07-16-2005 03:17 PM

Hmmm...

Power metal in America costs...about 16-25 bucks an album.

I feel your pain...i got no money. :upset:
