I actually kinda liked chmistry when I had it, the teacher I had was pretty cool i.e. he let me mess around, talk, and sleep as much as I wanted. I almost caght the lab on fire.

coddingtown 10-19-2004 05:54 PM

I never took chemistrty. I took physics instead, it was a pretty cool class

bottlerocket 10-19-2004 05:55 PM

^ how? :amaze: [Edit: To Funk]

Last year my chem teacher was the man. He'd been teaching for 30 some-odd years and really knew his stuff. He and a few friends of mine would just hang out in his room for a while after school and we'd discuss chemistry and physics.

It sounds boring, but it really was really cool. That's were I learned about self-ionization of water and about 90% of my other random chemistry knowledge (C3H8O = isopropyl alcohol, all about hydrocarbons and the -ane family, methane, butane, propane, hexane, etc., and all that fun stuff).

I can't wait to go to college and study chemistry.

Let's go Sox!

I remember the last Chemistry lesson of the A levels...
We made contact explosives. And nearly set fire to the ceiling doing the 'Marge Simpson' experiment.

I hate homework.

My friend Pete and I make fireworks and explosives. But we don't make bombs. Bombs hurt people. Pyrotechnics is not about making bombs.

But when we hang out we build fireworks or anything than can explode (hence my user title, "Mx Pyro").

Nah, all the contact explosives did was make a pop. They were basically crystals with a very unstable chemical structure, so when the phsyical structure was in any way damaged, they broke down rapidly. We crystallized them fast so we got small crystals, with weak explosions. If you took your time they could be pretty dangerous.

Oh, they also scared the shit out of a load of first years because we sprinkled them on the ground near the door.

Well we were using these bunson burners to boil water for a lab (forgot exactly what was to be accomplished) and I took a piece of paper and put it over the burner and set it on fire, my lab partner freaked and managed to knock over the burner and it ignited the rest of the papers on the table, I did get use a fire extinguisher ( a bit more than needed too). It was kinda worth the 15 day suspention i got for it.

I was such an anti-student.

Wintermute 10-19-2004 06:05 PM

5 days? A friend of mine got 5 days for intentionally setting fire to a whole table in the dining hall because he was bored!

bottlerocket 10-19-2004 06:05 PM

^ Very very funny. I can see that happening...

  Hahaha that is hysterical. I want to try that. Any specific chemicals come to mind? I'd probably have to make it myself, seeing as they break down rapidly o_O

So anyway, off the subject of science (I think we're scaring the other MXicans away), what's everyone doing this weekend?

FUNKNBASS 10-19-2004 06:09 PM

Playing bass, I might have gig, I also might spend a couple of days down by the beach with a ton of friends.

Wintermute 10-19-2004 06:09 PM

Hmmmm... I can't remember what we made them with now...
I have a feeling it was with chemicals you probably don't have access to, I'm pretty sure conc. Sulphuric acid was in there, the kind where when you take the lid off the bottle it starts to steam, and one drop really will go straight through your clothes.

(Interestingly enough, it one ate away part of my shirt, only the horizontal parts of the weave. Looking at the label, sure enough, the horizontal weave was composed of polymers, which were hydrolyzed by the acid. The vertical strands were cotton.)

Sleep, Band practice or two, Hanging out, More sleep. :p

bottlerocket 10-19-2004 06:13 PM

^ Very interesting...o_O

And I personally have access to all the chemicals, materials, and equipment in the chemistry lab whenever I want. I have keys to the chemistry, physics, and biology labs and can use what's in them whenever I want (provided there isn't a class and it's not for something illegal). :p

Ah, being president and founder of the school's science club sure does have its benefits

And Drano is concentrated H2SO4, but I think it's got impurities in it. I tried using it once to make phenosulfuric acid (Pirric acid and H2SO4), and it didn't work at all...o_O

Well, if you've got the chemicals...

Oh, we also took the first few steps towards making TNT, but converting NitroToluene to DiNitroToluene (let alone TriNitroToluene) is very hard indeed...

I've not got my notebooks with me, but when I go back home, if I remember, I'll look it up for you. (bear in mind that will be around Christmas time, so you will have to remind me.

FUNKNBASS 10-19-2004 06:17 PM

I bet theres instructions on the web.

Foxfire 10-19-2004 06:19 PM

Haha today in class, my friend got bored and walked around asking people "Hey, ever heard of dihydrogen monoxide? It kills people, and it's in all of us. Hell, it's been identified in every body of water in the United States."

Good times.

Wintermute 10-19-2004 06:21 PM

I remember reading an article saying that the Australian government was severely worried about dihydrogen monoxide levels... but that was in a paper on April 1st.

Seriously though, if you get the chance go read the HazCard entry for water... it's hilarious.

They did something like that on that Penn and Teller show Bull****. It was so funny, all these people were signing petitions to ban it.

Thanks a lot.

TNT is the same as 2,4,6-trinitromethylbenzene, right? I think my chem teacher told me that once...we were talking about stable and non-stable hydrocarbon compounds, and he said TNT was very stable compared to nitroglycerin (at least I'm pretty sure that's what he said).

That's right, yeah. Toluene is another term for methyl-benzene.

Ah, yes. Names always screwed with my head in chem. They name things to simplify them, but the names are so difficult to pronounce, and they have complex ways of naming them unless you sit down and study them, such as "Toluene [=] methyl-benzene" [quoted from Wintermute, the best mod ever...along wtih LR and MadThumbs]. :D

i bought a wah pedal today, a dunlop cry baby from hell(dimebag sig), greta pedal does everything i need or could ever want it to. funny part is before me it was purchased by the simple plan guitarist. yeah i know what your thinking what does he need a wah pedal for, ne ways it was used and a great deal so the only problem i have with it is who ever the hell he is stole a foot off the bottom of the wah pedal now it sits funny.

Wintermute 10-19-2004 06:31 PM

Have you ever looked at the HazCard for water? If you do you realise that a good deal of what is printed on Hazcards is just stock print. It says if you get any water on your skin you should wash it off with large quantities of water. If you get water in your eye, flush immediatly with water. If large quantities of water (particularly concentrated water) goes down the drain, notify the emergency services...

Well, it amused me, anyway, slaving away doing coursework I needed any distraction I could get, and I couldn't just steal some more exercise books as I'd already filled my bag with them!

White_Summer 10-19-2004 06:35 PM

150 bucks canadian, which isnt bad considering bran new its like 225 so i thought it was a great deal
