Sooo, "Death Whispered a Lullaby" was playing at the end of the Criminal Minds that was on tonight. It was actually a pretty nice fit because some FBI agent was presumably shot by a creepy raspy voice guy at the end. If I do recall, one of the CSI shows had Buckley's Hallelujah as the closing song too, at least those producers are doing something right. Anyway, thought you guys should know.

I hope Opeth stays true to their roots. Dunkelheit: I actually meant outside of N. America, sorry about that. |
I bought Morningrise off of eBay for about 7 dollars a week and half ago. Hopefully, I'll get it sometime soon, then I'll only have 3 albums left for my Opeth monopoly.
MAYH, GR, and Orchid, in case you were wondering. Which you weren't. Jerks. |
I was. :upset:
|
Honest?
/with wide, lit up eyes |
Yeah! :)
|
I only physically own two Opeth albums. :upset: GR and Deliverence. I really should pick up Still Life someday (I Have mp3s for every song). It's always cheap and always in stock. All the other albums seem stupidly hard to find and tend to be stupidly expensive (About Ł15-17).
|
Still Life is a pretty amazing album. I listened to it again last night while doing homework.
If youŽll bear with me, YouŽll fear of me. YouŽd never leave me to, A fate with you. |
Got Deliverance today!
2 in 2 Days. Just putting it on my iPod now. :) 8/8 legal ownage. |
I finally got Ghost Reveries. Goddamn I am blown away by it. The poor reviews it has gotten on metal-archives are just that; piss poor. Man, what a great album. It's pretty different, but still Opeth and still great...
|
What I don't get is that so many people here 'hate' GR but on Prog Archives it's one of their highest rated albums. Personally, I think that it lies in the middle of Opeth's works.
|
I don't really get why people think this is a bad album. There's no denying great music, whether it's tr00 or not. But oh well, different strokes.
|
I think that it's a very good album, not just as good as some other Opeth albums.
|
Ghost Reveries is one of my favorite albums from Opeth.

exactly my thoughts. Atonement sounds a bit like some advert i've heard recently or something. |

I go from thinking it's good to thinking it sucks. Yes, it is Opeth, but it's not traditional Opeth, it's more jazzy and less epic, you know? |
Ghost Reveries is one of my favorite albums from Opeth.
I enjoy it for its originality, but it doesnt' have as good of a flow as some of their other albums do, like Still Life and BWP. |

Well boohoo. So they're not busting out "orchid"-style songs anymore. That doesn't mean it sucks. But I guess to an Opeth die-hard fanboy that's the equivalent to making St. Anger. :p |
haha, Pwned.

It's missing the dark and eerie vibe/sound the older stuff had, IMO. I can't really tell if it's because of the riffs, the production (SW's production was good quality but still grim-sounding, but this is like...TOO good, if you know what I mean), the dominance of keyboards in the soft songs rather than the old classical style guitars, or the lyrics. Some of which are downright terrible (see Harlequin Forest). Although there are still some cool ones (I like "Its mouth....is a vorteeeeeeeeeeeeex!" etc) Also, the quality of the songs is kind of variable. GoP and Baying both rule hard, Beneath the Mire is probably Opeth's worst song IMO, and not just least good -- actually bad (except the solo at the end), Atonement is good but not really Opeth-sounding to me, HF is pretty good musically but has atrocious lyrics, Hours of Wealth is nice at the beginning but the rest is kind of meh, TGC is too repetetive and has that godawful riff in the middle, and Isolation Years is excellent. |
I would probably say that it is their most inconsistent record to date.
|
GR is one of their best albums. Yes, they're going in a new direction, and no it's not a bad thing.
SL>GR>D2>MAYH>BP>M>D1>O All of their albums are amazing to some degree. And fuck it, GR has more eerie vibe than Deliverance by FAR. |

Take the beginning of Beneath the Mire for music, or "these are the trees" verse of HF for lyrics. However I don't think the new musical direction has much to do with this, it's just that there have never been so many lapses in Opeth's/Mike's amazing songwriting all at once. I would rank GR as the least dark/creepy album, or possibly Morningrise, but then GR is second. But to me, Morningrise doesn't really TRY to be creepy, whereas GR does but the music just doesn't sound right for it. |
I agree with Shadius in the rankings, and I actually find GR to be the second most consistent Opeth album aside from Still Life, of course. I haven't heard My Arms, Your Hearse, though. Maybe after that GR would be third, but I will have to see.

What's wrong with that riff and the distorted dissonant chords behind it? And that drum fill is great. It's fairly original. And the "these are the trees" etc. lyrics take me away into a forest or somethng being chased by someone, they're pretty good lyrics, IMO. Not using fancy contrived words like a lot of their older stuff, fair enough, but good in their own right. And i'd say Deliverance has hardly any atmosphere for an Opeth album. To Drone, MAYH is an amazing album. Just something about it really clicked with me after a while, I find the atmosphere of it so cold and dark. Great stuff. |
I agree with the Deliverance thing, But its a good thing when you just feel like jamming.

The stupid keyboard riff is horrible and sounds like some cheesy little riff from a cartoon show when it's in Arabia or something. Then the riffing is OK I guess, but when the growls kick in and that section goes on I have to stop myself from skipping. Amazing material, but it's too short for it to be as epic as it could have been. Shame that it wasn't a few minutes longer. |
