Yeah mine is a little wonky like that too, but not that far back.

Now I just force it to scrobble stuff in the diagnostics of the last.fm client.

Yeah I use that and it seems to work better.

for some reason last.fm seems to only scrobble stuff from the second time you listen to something and on. after your iPod has been synced once already, that is.

It makes a snapshot of how many listens you have for every song the first time you sync it and after that it scrobbles every additional time you play a track. So you can't scrobble a listen that happened before you synced the iPod the first time.
