I think the easiest stuff to write is what you listen to most of the time. It's just what comes naturally, I guess.
Well guys, I'm off for the night.
See you tomorrow. Unfortunately, I won't be in late at night tomorrow myself. I have work again. |
Blues is a lot of fun. I just wish I was better at it. I always have a tendency to really try and let it rip like the best blues guys do, but I'm not as in touch with the grit that they put into it. I'm a much more refined player, and my brand of badassedness comes from good execution of complex lines rather than low-down guitar slinging. And I tell you, there are many days where I wish it was the other way around.
Hot damn, Cain envies my guitar playing! :) Of course, I have bluesman in my blood, so I guess it comes naturally to me. EDIT: Peace, Jake |
I think that tomorrow is going to be my first ***OFFICIAL*** day off this summer. :-/ It's been a long time coming, though. Farmwork is so monotonous. It feels like I've already been working for a year, but it's really only been about 3 weeks.
You definately do have talent. Hope you'll remember all of us when you get your recording contract. ;)
I'm trying to learn theory, but god damn it takes forever to sink in with me. I'm not wired to think in terms of logic and rules. The way my mind works can basically be boiled down to, "Okay here's this thing... I wonder if I can do this with it..."
Really? Because that's how theory clicked with me. I'd learn a scale, or a rule about how to make a chord from a scale, or a way to do something, and it would lead me to explore. "What does this note sound like over this note?" "What does this chord become when superimposed on this unrelated bass note?" Theory to me isn't rules, it's opportunities for neat-sounding things in my compositions. The second chord in my calm verse is a perfect example. I knew that the Em-C change was good and dark, but then I though about Em9 and what a fantastic chord that was. Then I was like, what if I played that chord except with a C note? And I got that awesome Cmaj9#11 thing in the verse. I think looking at every rule like an exporation thing is the only way I've managed to stay in touch with my composing brain as opposed to my soloing brain growing like a tumor. |
Haha... Spotted at Hyde Park for Live8: "Pink Floyd Reunited? Pigs have flown!".
:D :D I saw them play together live!!!!!!! *Smileys pale when compared to my face* |
I'm really slow at writing songs. I'm just finishing up a song I started over a year ago. I'm writing alone though, and that slows things down. I wish I had a band. :upset:

Of course, I have bluesman in my blood, so I guess it comes naturally to me. EDIT: Peace, Jake
I just really wish I could jam. I don't think I can. I can solo until my *** falls asleep, but I don't really think I'd be a good jammer, mostly because I'm too **** melodic. I can't utilize all those kick-*** dirty notes in blues and jazzy rock like the Allman Brothers in musical ways. It just sounds like a big fart when I go on a chromatic run or riff. It's depressing. I'm a composer and a soloist, but I suck at improvising cool stuff off the cuff in a musical situation. |

It's always in a stale textbook fashion that instantly puts me to sleep. I don't learn anything because they don't tell me what it does or how to use it. For Christ's sake, I still don't even know how to use modes properly, because no one ever explained them to me in a practical manner. They always just said, "This mode is called this and sounds like this." |
Riv: You did? They played in Australia? I thought you couldn't afford a trip to London?
/confused Steerpike: I feel the same way about Music Theory. Right now all the composing I do is sheer impulse.
I just really wish I could jam. I don't think I can. I know what you mean. It's really frustrating because my own compositions are turning out less and less satisfactory and I don't even know where to start or how to approach it. I'm trying to write a little classic metal ditty called Black Magic Fever, but I can't seem to translate the music I hear in my head. |
I'm more of a blues-rock guy. My playing style is pretty gritty, like Iommi.

I'm working on a thrash metal piece right now. I don't play guitar too much though.
Chris, seriously, what is Doug Munro? |

As for practical application, guitar magazines that tend to focus on soloing and musically complex compositions (I'm thinking of UK's Guitar Techniques here) can help you figure out what the situations are. Speaking of which I was wishing I had a camera for your little contest, Steerpike. I was playing Gary Moore's "The Loner," and for the big extended solo at the end the wah was on, my eyes were shut tight, and my mouth was wide open and pointing towards the ceiling. Leah would have had a fit I think. |
Riv: You did? They played in Australia? I thought you couldn't afford a trip to London?
/confused
Nah, I saw them for the 4 minutes my TV station played them... so I downloaded a more or less "official" bootleg of the AOLmusic stream, and watched the entire set. It's official, Channel 9, or "WIN TV" as it is sometimes known, is retarded. |
Ohhhhh...I saw the whole set, and on VH1 no less

I'll stick those on my Amazon.com wishlist. Magazines aren't really practical now because in order to buy them or subscribe to them, I would regularly have to spend money. I myself am more of a technical guy, I just got bored with pentatonics after a while and applied myself to some theory. A couple years ago I would have never thought I'd be able to sweep pick, but I'm doing pretty good with technique, I would say. |

Oh. Nevermind then. Still, it can't be too hard to find somebody to loan you a camera for a day. |

 Forgot about those little e-threesomes you guys practically get into. I can be a bit of a showman with a guitar. Nothing too crazy, but I can hold people's interest. Chris: Sigur Ros Peace, Lucas |
Well, I'm off to bed. Night all, and thanks for critiquing my song. :)

Good night.

Good night, bro.
And so begins late night with ICB. Where the hell is Ryan, I wanna crack a couple "your mom" jokes then go to bed :p . So my bandmates and I stocked up on fireworks and explosives and bottlerockets and other goodies today (or yesterday, whatever). It's going to be a beautiful sight, blowing shit up, etc... NP: Opeth- To Rid the Disease |

Mmm. 2:40 AM. I'm considering listening to Shadows Fall and writing some stuff at the same time, but I might stay for late night with ICB. I wish a motherfucker would upload me the songs.

So right now I am downloading Half Life 2, has anyone played it?
Half life 2 is the most disappointing game i have ever played. So lame. While the phsyics engine is incredible, the game itself is inferior in almost every way to either Farcry or Doom 3. Inspired by a conversation in another thread, I'm working on the rules for an R&M video contest. Here's what I've got so far:
1. Only one submission per MXer. Songs may be either original compositions or covers, depending on the individual's preference. 2. Judging will be based on overall musicianship, accuracy of playing, and showmanship. 3. There will be separate rankings for solo acts and for full bands. In other words, there will be a first place for a solo performance, and a first place for a band, along with respective second and third places as well as runners-up. 4. All videos must be shot for this exact purpose only. No concert videos. 5. Recording must be done live. No digital mixing. 6. All videos must be a straight-up performance. I don't care if you can create a music video artistic enough the outstrip Peter Gabriel, that's not what this contest is about. 7. If you are simply voting for your friends, you will be disqualified. As you can see, there are still a few gaps to fill in, but I should have it ready soon. |
sounds interesting, but isn't a concert video a straight-up performance?? just wondering

Eh, the wording is probably really poor at this point. I know there was a point to that when I wrote it down, but for the life of me I can't remember. |
eh thats no fun, it would be better to make a proper music video in my opinion, just let people create some off the wall stuff. however if you have no skill in filming what so ever, i could see how that could be a problem to the vast majority of people
|
ow I see. anyways, good luck with monitoring a thread like that. looks hard

That's why I opted to just film a performance. Directing and editing is time-consuming and the software for the latter is expensive. Hell, either way, I plan to make a couple of my own music videos and post them here. I won't be performing on them. I'll just be lip-synching to some of the lyrics and might make an appearance or two playing guitar. Otherwise, it's the original recording with my own video work accompanying it. So far, I've got the work planned for Don't Fear the Reaper by BOC, The Price You Pay by Savatage, and Sweet Miracle by Rush. |
It will certainly be fun to watch but difficult to make one
