Dr. Jake Destructo 07-03-2005 11:01 PM
I do. I'm currently on track getting a full ride scholarship and a 4.0 last semester though, at least I think I am. I did a lot in high school too. My goal is to make more than my dad does now as a starting salary
Dr. Jake Destructo 07-03-2005 11:09 PM

Oh yeah, we talked about that huh Ray. I can actaully think of an immigration story involving Chicago. Has anyone ever read Black Boy by Richrard Wright? It's kind of an autobiography about this black boy(go figure) who was born down south and was subject to oodles of prejudice, but he eventually made it to Chicago in his late teens and ended up living a succsesful life. I reccomend it to anyone looking for a sad story, though. As far as required literature for my past english class, it was top notch.

ATM 07-03-2005 11:11 PM

Lucas,

INCREDIBLE! You are a musical genius, man. I wish I could come up with stuff like this.

The only complaint I have is that the drums need to be louder.

Steerpike 07-03-2005 11:15 PM
Sup guys. I was wondering if you guys could give this song a listen: it's a newly recorded version of my song "Empty" renamed to "A Silent Sky" and with the "real" programmable drums, synth, and bass on Garageband rather than stupid MIDI. Unfortunately, in the mixdown to iTunes it sounds like some mids were lost. So, I would appreciate criticism not only on the song composition wise, but also in terms of levels and mix. Are they all right or way off?

Please listen! :)

Dude, you never cease to amaze. I wish I could play guitar like that. The whole song had a rather quixotic atmosphere to it. The synth layers really helped to create the proper ambience, and the guitar tone was great.

The song had a distinctive power metal flavor to it, and I really liked sharp-edged riffs in particular. Well-done.

While I'm thinking of it, have you gotten a chance to read "Pickman's Model" yet?

Cain 07-03-2005 11:18 PM
Lucas,

Really? Huh. I was paranoid about them being too loud. :)

Any thoughts on the mix?

Steerpike: not yet. I think I need to buy a book of his stuff. I haven't ever read those stories.

BTW, my goal for the song was a more radio-friendly power metal style except suited to modern rock vocals (the good kind) and with a tinge of prog.

Steerpike 07-03-2005 11:20 PM

I thought the drums were good. The crashing symbols meant they didn't need to be too high in the mix, though the bass could have used a little boost.

Illmatic 07-03-2005 11:21 PM

Steerpike: So, is "quixotic" your word of the day or something? :p

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-03-2005 11:23 PM

Cain, you badass, how long have you been playing guitar? I'm jealous of your composing abilities. :D The song is incredibly catchy, and the playing is flawless. I'd actaully turn to drums down maybe .5 to 1.5 dbs, if anything. I'm diggin it though, either way.

Oh, and I just got to the solo now. What can I say? Jeeze man, I hate you!

You should be able to find a compilation at Barnes & Noble. The one by my house never has fewer than five different ones, at least two of which will have the story in question. They mostly come in anthologies, or smaller pocket books.

Anyway, if you want to contact me at any time, I can give you my gmail address, since I'm a little hard to reach by IM, and that would make communication a little smoother.

Yes, because I'm feeling it. :D

I've almost got a couple scripts done, bought some dirt cheap lighting for sets (read: Japanese lanterns) and now that I'm getting paid, should have Witching Hour Studios up and running by the end of the summer.

I'm in a very good mood.

EDIT: Whoops. Double post. My mind is kind of drifting, so I'm not really paying very good attention.

I, on the other hand, am feeling rather empty and restless.

Since the Kyuss thread won't get any replies, does anyone elses 'Green Machine' cut off at 3.38? Because it finishes like mid-chorus on mine, but that's the only length I can find on Soulseek which is very dependable. Any Kyuss fans answer, thanks.

Yeah, my version is also 3:38. I've noticed this with more than one stoner band though. Their songs start and end in very unpredictable places. Isis comes to mind here, as well.

The first part I can't really sympathize because I'm single and have been for over 7 years.

As for the restlessness, I get that feeling sometimes. My usual solution is to think of something I've always wanted to try but have been putting off. This week, I started studying sleight of hand and cooking.

I don't know if it will work for you, but it's worth a shot, I guess.

AIC/EAZY-E 07-03-2005 11:34 PM

It's just that Green Machine was a single? With like a video. It couldn't have possibly finished like that; maybe it fades out? I'll download a live version, anyway thanks man.
Jake pwns, being my name too.

I can empathize with you there, though, man. I've been without a girl for 2 months, but it feels like forever. :-/

That's an interesting method. I'll try it then next time R&M gets boring. :p Usually, I just pick up my guitar and play a few solos, but sometimes I get sick of that, so instead of doing something constructive, I eat.

AIC Jake- Right you are. I think it cuts out because Welcome to Sky Valley is one song, or a series of tracks that are constructed of several tracks, so that would explain the sudden clip like that. I'm pretty sure the album is like that, but I'm not positive. This would explain that though.

Three hours a day..:-/ Dedication is really all it takes. It's a concept that has been growing on me for a couple of months. I can definitely feel my self progressing, but I doubt I'll be that good in 3 and a half years. :p How long have you been composing stuff for? I've sort of been dabbling in it, but nothing serious. Just little guitar riffs and one or two minute songs.

Small wonder I still suck. I've only been at it for 2 1/2 years with maybe an hour and a half practice at best every day, and usually missing a couple days in the week.

Shred Danson 07-03-2005 11:47 PM

Trying to download it, but it's being slow to me :(

Cain, your practicing routine ain't too far off from mine. I play about 5-8 hours each day for the fast 5 years (6 in December).

Man, time flies.

Really? I'm surprised you think so, I wouldn't have thought it was your cup of tea.

BTW, I haven't forgotten about you wanting "All Along the Watchtower," but I'm planning on including the track in an FA of Michael Hedges in the near future, so you could just get it then. Sorry I was a bum about that.

Illmatic 07-03-2005 11:48 PM

Yeah, I'm not sure I have that kind of dedication...I practiced a lot more when I started out. Nowadays when I do play, I play for a long time, but not on a consistent day-to-day basis.

EDIT: It's okay, Cain and yeah, I'm surprised I enjoyed it, too  I guess the vocals/lyrics are my least favorite parts of metal songs

I've been writing songs since six months. Learning theory really helped a lot. Plus, if it doesn't sound too arrogant, I just think I have something of a natural aptitude for writing the music I want to be able to write. You can practice all you want and you won't be able to write a good song, after all. Technical skill and musical knowledge just brings out the kind of songwriter you are: good, or bad.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-03-2005 11:51 PM

What kind of stuff do you usually play, Ray? Lately, I've been learning Dirge for November by Opeth, and Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. I started CN yesterday in honor of Pink Floyd's reunion on Live 8. :p

Illmatic 07-03-2005 11:51 PM

All I seriously play and write is the blues, and I think I'm good at it. Even if it is probably easier to write than metal.

NP: Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man

EDIT: Answered your question, Jake  But I always mix a little bit of rock and folk in...I don't only play blues

(Okay, maybe not jazz)

Blues is a lot of fun. I just wish I was better at it. I always have a tendency to really try and let it rip like the best blues guys do, but I'm not as in touch with the grit that they put into it. I'm a much more refined player, and my brand of badassedness comes from good execution of complex lines rather than low-down guitar slinging. And I tell you, there are many days where I wish it was the other way around.

You definately do have talent. Hope you'll remember all of us when you get your recording contract. ;)

I'm trying to learn theory, but god damn it takes forever to sink in with me. I'm not wired to think in terms of logic and rules. The way my mind works can basically be boiled down to, "Okay here's this thing... I wonder if I can do this with it..."

I think the easiest stuff to write is what you listen to most of the time. It's just what comes naturally, I guess.
